0:00 last week we sat with the sparrows trusting that today holds what you need this morning we're moving from trust into something just as close what to do when worry tries to take the wheel let me read you philippians four verses six and seven do not be anxious about anything but in every situation by prayer and petition with0:29 thanksgiving present your requests to god and the peace of god which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in christ jesus here's what that means if you're carrying something heavy this morning paul doesn't say don't worry about the big things he says do not be anxious about anything that includes the meeting at ten the0:58 bill that's due friday the conversation you've been putting off he's naming the whole stack and then he's giving you a place to put it down the instruction is simple in every situation not just the crises not just the moments when you've run out of options bring it to god prayer and petition means you actually name the thing1:26 you don't dress it up you don't wait until you figured out how to fix it you say it out loud right now with thanksgiving woven in thanksgiving isn't pretending the problem isn't real it's remembering that god has met you before and that changes the way you hold what's in front of you today the promise in verse seven1:51 is the part a lot of people miss paul says the peace of god will guard your heart and mind that word guard it's a military term it means to stand watch to protect to keep something safe while you sleep the peace god gives isn't a feeling you work up it's a presence that takes up position between you2:17 and the thing that wants to unravel you and here's the part that matters this morning it transcends all understanding that means you won't always be able to explain why you're steady when the circumstances say you shouldn't be you won't always feel calm in the way you think calm is supposed to feel but your heart will be guarded2:40 held even when your mind is still working through the details that's what peace looks like in real time not the absence of trouble the presence of god standing watch while you keep moving so if anxiety is the first thing you felt when you woke up this morning here's what you do name it out loud if you can3:08 silently if that's where you are tell god the specific thing the name the number the outcome you're afraid of don't edit it don't make it sound more spiritual than it is just say it then say thank you for one thing anything the fact that you're awake the fact that you're not doing this alone the fact that god3:36 has carried you this far and hasn't let go yet3:41 and then this is the hardest part let the peace do its job you don't manufacture it you don't chase it down you present your request you give thanks and you let god guard what you just handed over that's the trade your anxiety for his peace your understanding for his presence4:12 you don't have to figure it all out before breakfast you just have to bring it to the one who's already standing watch that's what today holds not the absence of hard things but the presence of a god who guards your heart while you walk through them go ahead and take that with you
