0:00 good morning last time we were together we sat with that beautiful promise from philippians the one about trading our anxiety for god's peace it's a powerful exchange but there's a practice that helps us live inside that peace even when the world feels unsettled it's a practice that can feel like the hardest thing to do but it holds0:29 the key to our entire perspective so let's begin there this is from the first letter to the thessalonians chapter five verse 180:42 give thanks in all circumstances for this is god's will for you in christ jesus it's a short verse so simple to read and yet so much is held within it give thanks in all circumstances that can feel like an impossible command can't it when a loved one is sick when a job1:12 is lost when your own heart is aching how can we possibly give thanks in the middle of that it can almost sound dismissive as if our pain doesn't matter1:26 but i want you to notice something very important a small word that changes everything1:36 the verse doesn't say give thanks for all circumstances it says give thanks in them1:45 you don't have to be thankful for the sickness or for the loss1:51 you don't have to pretend the pain isn't real1:56 god is not asking you to deny your reality he is inviting you to find him in the middle of it2:05 that is the difference so what does that mean for you today as you look at the hours ahead it means your gratitude is not dependent on your circumstances it is dependent on your focus think of it this way when you're driving in a storm you can focus on the rain hitting the windshield the wind pushing against the2:31 car the dark clouds or you can focus on the headlights cutting through the darkness the steady of the engine and the road that is still there leading you home the storm is real but so is the way through it gratitude is the act of intentionally focusing on the good that remains it's a discipline it's a choice to2:58 look for the evidence of god's presence even when it's hard to see maybe the only thing you can be thankful for is the breath in your lungs start there maybe it's the warmth of the cup in your hands start there3:17 this isn't about pretending everything is perfect it's about remembering that god is perfect and he is present the verse ends with a profound statement for this is god's will for you in christ jesus sometimes we search so hard for god's will we wonder if we should take this job or move to that city we ask for big3:45 signs but here we are told something very plain god's will for you is that you have a thankful heart it isn't that the hardship is his will it's that your grateful response your trust in him during the hardship that is his will it's a posture of the soul it's a statement of trust that says even here i4:13 know you are with me even now i know you are good choosing gratitude in a difficult moment is one of the deepest acts of faith you can make it declares that your hope is not in your situation but in your savior it shifts your spirit from being a victim of your circumstances to being anchored in a reality4:39 that is greater than them so as you step into this day i invite you to try it before your feet even hit the floor find one thing just one say thank you for it let that be the first word that shapes your day gratitude is not a feeling you wait for it is a choice you make5:09 and it is a choice that remakes you from the inside out
