0:00 Think for a moment about the clothes you chose to put on this morning.0:06 Maybe you picked something comfortable, or something that makes you feel confident.0:13 It was a conscious choice.0:15 Yesterday, we spoke about having a lamp for our feet, just enough light for the very next step.0:23 Today is about what we choose to wear as we take that step.0:28 Here is the reading from Colossians, chapter three, verse twelve.0:34 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.0:46 Let’s sit with that for a moment.0:49 Clothe yourselves.0:50 It’s such a beautiful and practical image.0:54 It suggests that these qualities—compassion, kindness, humility—are not just feelings that might happen to us.1:03 They are choices.1:05 They are garments we can intentionally put on each morning.1:10 Just as you wouldn't leave the house without a shirt or shoes, the invitation here is to not leave your inner life unclothed either.1:21 And notice the foundation for this instruction.1:25 It begins with identity.1:27 "As God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved." This isn't a command to earn love.1:34 It’s a call to live out the love you ALREADY have.1:39 You are chosen.1:40 You are loved.1:41 Because of that, here is how you can walk through the world.1:46 It’s not a burden, but a response.1:49 A way of showing on the outside the grace you’ve received on the inside.1:56 So what does it mean to wear these things today?2:00 Let’s start with compassion and kindness.2:03 They’re like a matched set.2:06 Compassion is the deep feeling in your gut when you see someone hurting.2:12 It’s the internal ache of empathy.2:15 But kindness is compassion in motion.2:18 Kindness is what happens when you let that feeling move your hands and your feet and your voice.2:26 It’s making the extra cup of coffee for someone.2:30 It’s sending the text that just says, "Thinking of you." It’s holding your tongue when you could be critical.2:40 Kindness is the fabric.2:42 Compassion is the thread that holds it together.2:46 Today, you will have a dozen opportunities to be kind.2:51 Look for them.2:52 Choose to wear that garment.2:54 Then there’s humility and gentleness.2:57 These can be misunderstood.3:00 Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself; it’s thinking of yourself less.3:06 It’s the quiet confidence that allows you to celebrate someone else's success without feeling threatened.3:15 Gentleness is the texture of that humility.3:19 It's a soft answer when you expect a fight.3:22 It’s a careful hand when you could be forceful.3:27 It’s the opposite of the harsh, demanding, loud energy the world so often celebrates.3:34 To clothe yourself in gentleness is to decide, ahead of time, that your strength will be shown in your softness.3:44 And finally, there's patience.3:46 This one might be the hardest to put on, and the easiest to stain during the day.3:53 The verse goes on to say, "bearing with each other." That phrase "bearing with" acknowledges that there will be friction.4:04 People will be difficult.4:06 You will be difficult for other people.4:09 Patience is not the absence of frustration.4:13 It’s what you DO with the frustration.4:16 It’s the space you create between a feeling and a reaction.4:21 It’s giving grace when someone is running late, when a project isn’t perfect, or when a loved one is just having a bad day.4:32 It is perhaps the most powerful way we show love, because it costs us something.4:39 It costs us our right to be right, right now.4:43 So as you move into this day, remember what you’re wearing.4:48 You are clothed in a love that can't be earned or taken away.4:53 And from that place, you get to choose your spiritual wardrobe.4:58 Will you wear compassion?5:01 Will you put on kindness?5:03 Will you wrap yourself in the quiet strength of gentleness and the deep grace of patience?5:10 The clothes you chose this morning will only last the day.5:15 But these… these are the garments that shape your soul.5:20 Wear them well.
