0:00 On April 22nd, 1970, twenty million people—a full ten percent of the entire United States population at the time—walked out of their homes, their schools, and their offices, and into the streets.0:14 They weren't protesting a war, not directly.0:18 They were protesting dirty water, smog-filled air, and a planet buckling under the weight of neglect.0:25 It was the first Earth Day.0:27 And looking back, we can see it wasn't just a day.0:31 It was the moment a new kind of power was born.0:35 A power that would, decades later on this very same date, bring the entire world to the table.0:42 This day, April 22nd, is just packed with these moments.0:46 These turning points where the world we thought we knew… changed.0:51 And the echoes are just incredible.0:54 On this day in 1509, a seventeen-year-old boy named Henry the Eighth ascended to the English throne.1:01 Think about that.1:02 A teenager, handed a kingdom.1:05 And we all know what happened next.1:07 This wasn't just a coronation; it was the prologue to a revolution.1:12 The break from the Catholic Church, the establishment of the Church of England… events that would redraw the religious and political map of Europe for centuries.1:24 All starting with a boy king on April 22nd.1:28 You can draw a straight line from that day to bloody wars and royal successions that defined the next two hundred years.1:37 It’s a thunderclap of a beginning.1:39 But this date also holds moments of profound creation.1:43 On April 22nd, 1876, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky put the final notes on the score for a ballet called "Swan Lake." He had no idea, of course.1:54 No idea that he had just created one of the most beloved, most enduring, most heartbreakingly beautiful stories ever told without words.2:04 A story that would be danced and re-interpreted for nearly one hundred and fifty years, a staple in every major ballet company on the planet.2:15 He just finished a job.2:17 And in doing so, gave the world a masterpiece that has outlived empires.2:22 And then you have the icons.2:24 The people who become shorthand for an entire era.2:28 On this day in 1923, Bettie Page was born in Nashville, Tennessee.2:33 The queen of the pinups.2:35 In the 1950s, she was everywhere, with that signature jet-black hair and knowing smile.2:41 But she was more than just a model.2:44 She was a flashpoint for a culture wrestling with itself.2:48 Her photos, which seem so tame to us now, were the subject of a Senate investigation.2:55 She disappeared from public life for decades, only to be rediscovered in the eighties and nineties as a feminist icon and a style inspiration for everyone from Madonna to comic book artists.3:09 She once said, “I want to be remembered as a woman who changed people’s perspectives concerning nudity in its natural form.” And you have to say, she absolutely succeeded.3:22 And speaking of icons who defined their generation, April 22nd, 1937, gives us the birth of Jack Nicholson.3:30 That's all you have to say, isn't it?3:33 The name itself brings the grin, the eyebrows, the unsettling charm.3:38 From Easy Rider to The Shining to As Good as It Gets, he was a force of nature on screen.3:45 A reminder that sometimes, the most memorable characters are the ones who are most unapologetically themselves.3:53 But April 22nd also holds a ghost.3:56 A dark anniversary we have to acknowledge.3:59 On this day in 1915, during the Second Battle of Ypres in World War One, German forces opened canisters of chlorine gas and let the wind carry a creeping, greenish-yellow cloud over the French and Algerian trenches.4:15 It was the first time chemical weapons were used on a mass scale in modern warfare.4:21 It was a new kind of horror.4:24 A line had been crossed, and the nature of war was changed forever.4:29 It’s a chilling reminder that history is not just made of kings and artists, but also of terrible, devastating innovations.4:38 The day the battlefield itself became poison.4:41 So let’s go back.4:43 Back to 1970.4:44 Back to those twenty million people.4:46 It's so easy for us now to see Earth Day as this inevitable, feel-good holiday.4:52 But in 1970, it was radical.4:54 It was a stroke of political genius by a Wisconsin senator named Gaylord Nelson.5:00 He saw the immense energy of the student anti-Vietnam War movement and had this brilliant idea.5:08 He essentially said: take that fire, that passion, that demand for a better world, and aim it at the environment.5:16 He called on students to fight "environmental degradation with the same energy that they displayed in opposing the Vietnam War." And they did!5:27 It was a sensation.5:28 It cut across all lines—Republicans, Democrats, rich, poor, city dwellers, farmers.5:35 Everyone could see the problem.5:37 The Cuyahoga River in Ohio had literally caught fire the year before.5:42 The air in Los Angeles was so thick with smog you could taste it.5:47 This wasn't an abstract threat.5:49 It was the world right outside their windows.5:53 And here’s the most important part.5:56 It worked.5:56 This wasn’t just a one-day festival of good intentions.6:00 The political impact was immediate and seismic.6:04 In the wake of that first Earth Day, the United States Congress, in a flurry of activity we can barely imagine today, created the Environmental Protection Agency.6:16 The EPA.6:17 Then came the Clean Air Act.6:19 The Clean Water Act.6:20 The Endangered Species Act.6:23 Landmark legislation that fundamentally changed our country's relationship with the natural world.6:30 All of it, all of it, can be traced back to the political pressure that erupted on that one single day.6:38 It was proof that a massive, coordinated, grassroots movement could bend the arc of history.6:45 Now.6:45 Fast forward forty-six years.6:47 To the day.6:48 April 22nd, 2016.6:49 At the United Nations headquarters in New York, something remarkable is happening.6:55 One hundred and ninety-five nations—virtually the entire planet—are signing the Paris Agreement on climate change.7:04 A legally binding international treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.7:10 And when you look at it from this future vantage point, you can’t miss the connection.7:16 It’s beautiful.7:17 The seed of an idea, planted in 1970 by twenty million people demanding change, had finally, forty-six years later, grown into a global forest of commitment.7:29 The energy that started on American streets had become the ink on a document signed by the world.7:37 It’s the same story, just on a planetary scale.7:40 Now, we know the critiques.7:42 We've lived with them.7:44 The Paris Agreement has no real teeth.7:47 Its targets are voluntary.7:49 Its enforcement mechanisms are weak.7:51 And all of that is true.7:53 But looking back, I think we were asking the wrong question.7:58 We were looking for a silver bullet, a single treaty that would "solve" climate change.8:04 But that was never what the Paris Agreement was.8:08 We can see it clearly now.8:10 The true innovation of the agreement wasn't a specific emissions target.8:15 It was the process.8:17 It was the architecture.8:19 The agreement works on a five-year cycle.8:22 Every five years, nations have to come back to the table with updated, more ambitious climate action plans.8:30 It created a system of perpetual motion.8:33 A framework for accountability and escalating ambition.8:37 It wasn't an answer; it was a machine for generating answers, over and over again.8:43 It took the spirit of that first Earth Day—that constant, nagging pressure for something better—and baked it into the machinery of global diplomacy.8:54 It acknowledged that this work would never be done in one go.8:59 It would be the work of generations.9:02 When you look at a date like April 22nd, you see the whole sweep of the human story.9:08 You see the accidental consequences of a teenager becoming a king.9:13 You see the deliberate horror of a new weapon being unleashed.9:18 You see the quiet, solitary act of creation that gives us a story like Swan Lake, and you see the loud, collective act of creation that gives us a movement like Earth Day.9:31 Each event is a beginning.9:33 A seed planted.9:34 Henry’s coronation seeded centuries of religious conflict.9:38 The gas at Ypres seeded a new dimension of warfare.9:42 And that first Earth Day, that explosion of hope and anger and demand, seeded a process that we are still a part of, right now.9:52 The signing of the Paris Agreement wasn't the end of that story.9:56 It was just the end of the first chapter.10:00 History isn't a destination we arrive at.10:03 It’s a landscape we are actively building.10:06 April 22nd isn't just a day on the calendar.10:09 It’s a blueprint for how a single moment—a king’s ascent, a protest’s first cry, a signature on a page—can echo for centuries.10:19 The work is never finished; it’s just passed to the next generation to continue the build.
