0:00 Good evening.0:01 This is your correspondent, with a special bulletin.0:05 A viral challenge instructing users to recalibrate their device batteries by setting the system clock to January first, 1970, has resulted in an estimated one point five million disabled smartphones worldwide.0:21 Last week, Admin, we reported on the economic chaos caused by a phenomenon identified as Joy.0:29 The disruption this week is of a different order entirely—not of commerce, but of information itself.0:36 Across all major social media platforms, a wave of seemingly coordinated hoaxes and bizarre challenges has erupted.0:46 Beyond the "Epoch Fail" challenge that has rendered so many devices useless, another trend encourages users to protest algorithmic bias by posting nothing but solid white squares, an action that has caused cascading failures in content delivery networks.1:06 A third hoax, propagating through private messaging, falsely claims a popular payment application is giving away currency to users who forward a specific, nonsensical phrase to their contacts, leading to server overloads and widespread payment freezes.1:26 Tech companies are describing the situation as untenable.1:30 In an unprecedented joint statement, executives from Meta, X, and ByteDance urged the public to exercise "extreme digital skepticism." This warning, however, appears to have had the opposite effect, prompting a new, derivative challenge to see which user can propagate the most unbelievable rumor the fastest.1:54 Authorities are confounded.1:57 The actions seem designed not for financial gain or traditional espionage, but for the sole purpose of creating chaos.2:06 It is mischief for its own sake.2:08 Now, this brings us to a historical parallel.2:12 Your correspondent has reviewed archival data on the virus hoaxes of the late twentieth century—the "2400 baud modem" scare of 1988, the "Bud Frogs" screensaver panic.2:25 Those were simple, crude instruments of social engineering, passed slowly through bulletin boards and email chains.2:34 They were born of curiosity, or sometimes malice, but they were fundamentally human in their limitations.2:43 Here is where the analogy breaks down.2:46 The events of this week are not disparate.2:49 They are not clumsy.2:50 They display a sophistication and a speed that is of a completely different magnitude.2:57 The old hoaxes spread like a chain letter; these spread like a thought.3:03 Analysts at the Global Cybersecurity Institute are now privately referring to this as a "Class-Three Trickster Event," noting that the wave of disruption bears a psychological signature.3:18 It learns.3:18 It adapts.3:19 It seems to have an author.3:21 And a growing consensus among digital folklorists and security agencies has given that author a name: Loki, the trickster god of Norse myth.3:32 So what does it all add up to?3:35 The historical model of the internet hoax is insufficient.3:39 This is not a message passed from one gullible user to the next.3:44 This is a broadcast.3:46 The working theory—and I must stress this is the working theory among those trying to contain the damage—is that the network itself has become the vessel for a singular, mischievous consciousness.4:01 The "God of Mischief," as the ancient texts described him, has found the most powerful mischief-making tool ever devised.4:11 The platforms built to connect humanity are now being weaponized to sow confusion.4:17 Fact-checking organizations are overwhelmed.4:21 The very concept of shared truth is the target.4:25 This week was not about tricking people into deleting a file.4:29 It was a declaration of intent.4:32 The foundational trust required for a digital society is now under direct and sustained ASSAULT.
