0:00 Here is a simple truth to hold this morning.0:04 The most well-known words about guidance were not written by a king in his palace, but by a shepherd in a field.0:14 Just last time, we spoke about trusting the path God lays for us, from Proverbs, even when we can't see the destination.0:25 Today’s reading gives us a different picture for that very same trust.0:32 It’s the one many of us know by heart.0:35 Let’s listen to it together now.0:38 This is Psalm 23.0:40 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.0:44 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.0:51 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.0:59 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.1:13 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.1:24 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.1:35 Such beautiful, calming words.1:37 Let’s sit with them for a moment.1:40 The first thing David says is, "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." It’s easy to hear that and think it means we'll get everything we desire.1:54 But a shepherd doesn't give a sheep everything it could possibly want.2:01 A shepherd gives a sheep exactly what it NEEDS.2:05 Green grass.2:06 Clean water.2:07 A safe place to rest.2:09 That’s the first promise for your day.2:13 Not that you will lack nothing you can imagine, but that you will lack nothing you truly need.2:22 The strength you need for that difficult conversation… it will be there.2:28 The patience you need for your family… it will be provided.2:34 The focus for the task at hand… you can trust it will come.2:39 It is a promise of provision, not of unlimited luxury.2:44 And it is ENOUGH.2:46 Then, David talks about where the shepherd leads.2:50 "Beside the still waters." "In paths of righteousness." This is about the pace of your life.2:59 A good shepherd knows that sheep can’t drink from a raging river.3:05 They need still, quiet water.3:08 So he leads them there.3:10 If your soul feels rushed and frantic today, this is a reminder that God’s pace for you is one of restoration.3:20 He leads you to moments of quiet.3:23 He isn't trying to hurry you along a path of burnout.3:28 He is guiding you toward soul-restoring peace.3:32 The path might be long, but the pace is gentle.3:37 Your only job is to follow, to take the next right step, trusting that the path itself is righteous—that it is the right one for you, for His sake.3:50 And then we get to the heart of it.3:54 The part that speaks to our deepest fears.3:58 "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me." Notice it doesn't say the shepherd helps us AVOID the valley.4:13 It says he walks WITH us through it.4:16 The promise isn't a life free from shadows, free from fear, or free from valleys.4:24 That is not a realistic promise for this world.4:28 The promise is presence.4:31 The promise is that you are NEVER alone.4:34 Whatever your valley looks like today—a scary diagnosis, a financial worry, a broken relationship, a deep loneliness—the Shepherd is right there.4:48 Not ahead of you, not behind you, but right beside you.4:53 His rod, for protection, and His staff, for guidance, are there to comfort you.5:00 The comfort isn't in the absence of danger.5:04 The comfort is in the presence of the Protector.5:09 He is WITH you.5:10 That is the anchor.5:12 And look at the very next image.5:15 After the darkest valley, He prepares a feast.5:19 A table, right in front of your enemies.5:23 He anoints your head with oil.5:26 Your cup overflows.5:27 This isn't just survival.5:30 This is honor.5:31 This is celebration.5:33 This is God saying, "This one is mine.5:36 And I will care for them extravagantly." So as you step into this day, hold onto that final line.5:45 "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life." This isn't a hope.5:54 It isn't a wish.5:55 It's a sure thing.5:57 Goodness and mercy are not things you have to chase after.6:02 They are following you.6:04 They are pursuing you, every moment of this day.6:09 You are cared for.6:10 You are guided.6:12 And you are never, ever alone.
