0:00 There is a difference between knowing about someone, and truly trusting them.0:05 It’s the difference between seeing a bridge and being willing to walk across it in the dark.0:13 Just yesterday, we were talking about that verse in Philippians...0:18 the one that invites us to bring our anxieties to God, and in return, receive a peace that doesn’t make sense.0:26 Today’s reading is about what happens after we hand over that worry.0:31 It’s about the trust that comes next.0:34 It comes from the book of Proverbs, chapter three, verses five and six.0:40 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight." Let's sit with that for a moment.0:54 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart." That word, "heart," in the original language, wasn't just about emotion.1:03 It meant the very center of you.1:05 Your thoughts, your will, your feelings...1:08 your inner self.1:10 So this is an invitation to trust God with the very core of who you are.1:15 And the verse immediately tells us what that trust is contrasted with.1:21 It says, "and lean not on your own understanding." This is the part that can feel difficult.1:28 Our understanding is what gets us through the day.1:32 It’s our ability to reason, to plan, to make lists, to solve problems.1:37 It's a good thing.1:38 But the verse uses the word "lean." Think about what it means to lean on something.1:45 You're putting your full weight on it.1:48 You're counting on it to hold you up.1:51 And the scripture suggests that our own understanding, by itself, was never designed to hold the full weight of our lives.2:00 It’s like trying to navigate a vast wilderness with a map that only shows one or two steps ahead.2:07 Your map is accurate for those two steps.2:11 But it can’t show you the mountain pass up ahead, or the river you'll need to cross tomorrow.2:18 Leaning ONLY on our own understanding means we can only see what's right in front of us.2:25 And that often leads to anxiety...2:27 because we know, deep down, that there's more to the journey than what we can see.2:34 So what does it mean for you, today, not to lean on your own understanding?2:39 It doesn't mean to stop thinking or planning.2:43 It means you hold those plans lightly.2:46 It means you acknowledge that your perspective is limited.2:50 When you're looking at your calendar for the day, or a difficult email you have to write, you can pause and remember that your strategy is not the only one at play.3:03 Then comes the second part.3:05 The instruction, and the promise.3:08 "In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." That phrase "in all your ways" is so beautifully small.3:17 It’s not just about the big, life-altering decisions...3:22 like a career change or a move.3:24 It’s about ALL your ways.3:26 The way you speak to the cashier at the grocery store.3:30 The way you approach that meeting you’re not looking forward to.3:35 The way you handle a frustrating delay in traffic.3:39 Every small turn, every interaction, every thought.3:43 To "submit" in this context isn't a word of defeat.3:47 It's a word of alignment.3:49 It’s like a chiropractor adjusting your back.3:52 You are submitting to a process that brings you into proper alignment, so that everything can work as it was designed to.4:02 It’s an active choice to acknowledge God in that small moment, and to be open to His guidance.4:09 To say, simply, "God, be in this conversation.4:12 Guide my words.4:14 Show me your way through this task." And the promise that follows is just… wonderful.4:20 "He will make your paths straight." Notice it doesn't say He will make your paths easy.4:27 Or smooth.4:28 Or free of obstacles.4:29 It says He will make them straight.4:32 The word means to make a path direct, right, and clear.4:36 He removes the confusion.4:38 He cuts through the weeds of indecision and second-guessing.4:43 He takes the crooked, wandering, anxious path we often walk when we rely only on ourselves...4:50 and He makes it a direct route.4:52 So for you, today, this means that in every small thing, you have a choice.4:58 You can lean entirely on your own limited map, or you can invite the mapmaker to walk with you.5:06 When you feel that familiar knot of anxiety about how something will turn out, you can see it as a signal.5:14 A reminder to submit that specific moment to God.5:17 To trust that even if you can’t see the whole path, He can.5:22 And He is making it straight.5:24 Your understanding is a good and precious gift.5:28 But it was never meant to carry the weight of the whole journey.5:33 That is a burden you can set down.
