0:00 In 2019, over two million people clicked "Going" on a Facebook event to storm Area 51.0:06 Another 1.5 million clicked "Interested." Just incredible numbers.0:11 Right?0:11 Last week on the show we were talking about the Distracted Boyfriend, you know, these self-contained iconic memes.0:20 But Storm Area 51 is what happens when the meme decides to break out of the screen and walk into the Nevada desert.0:29 And the government has to issue a statement about it.0:32 That's the part that gets me.0:35 A joke, started by ONE college student, literally forced the U.S.0:40 Air Force to go on the record and warn people not to show up.0:44 Because the plan, if you can call it that, was so perfectly absurd.0:49 The event description was literally "Let's see them aliens." The strategy was, and I love this, "If we Naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets." It was pure, distilled meme culture.1:03 It wasn't a serious plan; it was a collection of jokes stacked on top of each other.1:10 You had the Naruto runners, the people who were gonna "clap alien cheeks"...1:15 it was this chaotic, hilarious, anti-establishment performance.1:20 But then a few thousand people actually showed up.1:24 And this is where it gets really telling.1:27 The "raid" never happened, obviously.1:30 Instead, it turned into this quirky desert festival.1:34 Exactly!1:34 The goal wasn't really to breach the gate.1:37 The goal was to participate in the meme in real life.1:41 The event itself became a celebration of the joke that brought them all there.1:47 They weren't raiding Area 51; they were attending Meme Fest 2019.1:52 So the mission wasn't a failure...1:55 the mission just changed.1:56 The point became the gathering.1:59 The point WAS the gathering.2:01 It was about proving that the internet, this abstract space of jokes and irony, could manifest something tangible.2:09 Something real enough that the news helicopters had to show up.2:14 That was the win.2:15 And of course, this is a pattern we've seen before, or at least, that people tried to make a pattern.2:23 The "Storm X" copycat events.2:25 Oh, yeah.2:26 The "Storm the Vatican" or "Storm the Loch Ness" events that popped up right after.2:32 They all fizzled out.2:34 And the reason is that you can't schedule lightning in a bottle.2:38 You can't replicate that initial, explosive mix of absurdity and, I think, genuine curiosity.2:45 Area 51 has been this seventy-year-old blank spot on the map that we've all projected our anxieties and hopes onto.2:54 Mm-hm.2:54 It's the ultimate conspiracy theory hub.2:57 So the joke had this underlying, almost sincere question baked into it: what ARE you hiding in there?3:05 The joke was just a socially acceptable way to ask.3:09 The other "Storm" events didn't have that deep cultural root.3:13 So what's the legacy?3:15 What did it leave us with?3:17 I mean, it feels like a high-water mark for a certain kind of internet.3:22 That 2019 moment was maybe the peak of large-scale, ironic, collective action that was ultimately...3:30 pretty harmless.3:31 It was playful.3:32 Yeah, it was a collective act of escapism.3:35 For a moment, millions of people agreed to believe in a ridiculous plan together.3:41 It was a joke, but the feeling of community around that joke was completely real.3:47 And maybe that's the secret.3:49 The raid was never about finding aliens in a government base.3:54 It was about finding other people, out there in the digital darkness, who were also willing to look.
