About this episode
Each week, decode the cultural forces and sociology behind the web's most iconic viral moments.

The photographer, Antonio Guillem, said his models had a hard time acting out the scene on the streets of Girona, Spain, because they kept laughing.
0:10
And that's the photo shoot that produced the "Distracted Boyfriend," probably the single most recognizable meme of the last decade.
0:19
It wasn't some candid moment.
0:22
It was a planned stock photo meant to represent infidelity.
0:26
I always assumed it was a real, captured moment of betrayal!
0:30
So this whole thing started on a stock photo site like Shutterstock or Getty Images?
0:36
Exactly.
0:37
It sat there for a while, just one of thousands of photos in a series.
0:42
Then in early 2017, a Turkish Facebook group used it to represent Phil Collins being distracted by pop music, leaving prog rock behind.
0:51
Wait, Phil Collins?
0:53
That's the patient zero of the Distracted Boyfriend meme?
0:57
That's the first major instance we can find.
1:00
But it didn't truly explode until it hit Reddit a few months later.
1:05
Someone captioned the boyfriend "The Youth," the girlfriend "Capitalism," and the woman in red "Socialism." And then it was just...
1:14
everywhere.
1:15
Okay, so what was it?
1:16
Why that picture?
1:18
There are millions of funny pictures on the internet.
1:21
It's a perfect three-act play in a single frame.
1:25
You have a protagonist—the boyfriend.
1:27
You have his current reality or obligation—the girlfriend.
1:32
And you have the new, shiny temptation—the woman in red.
1:36
It's a visual template for desire, for distraction, for hypocrisy.
1:40
So you can just swap out the labels for anything.
1:44
Politics, tech, your diet...
1:46
I'm tempted by a donut while my sad salad looks on in horror.
1:50
You just described ninety percent of the meme's usage.
1:54
It's a storytelling machine.
1:56
Hold on—a storytelling machine.
1:58
That feels like the key.
2:00
Where have we seen that kind of template before, outside of memes?
2:05
Well, the most direct parallel is the political cartoon.
2:09
For centuries, you had these stock visual setups—a fat cat in a top hat representing industry, a humble farmer representing the people.
2:18
You just changed the specific context.
2:21
Right, you see the top hat and you immediately know who and what is being criticized.
2:27
But the meme is faster and more democratic.
2:30
A Thomas Nast cartoon in the 1870s took skill and a newspaper to distribute.
2:36
Anyone with a phone can relabel the Distracted Boyfriend in thirty seconds to comment on a new iPhone announcement.
2:44
So it's not just a picture, it’s a piece of grammar.
2:48
A new pictograph we all understand.
2:50
It's a visual proverb.
2:52
Think about it.
2:53
We used to have text-based proverbs like "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." It's a fixed little story that teaches a lesson about risk and reward.
3:04
And the Distracted Boyfriend is the proverb for "choosing the new shiny thing over your current responsibilities." Precisely.
3:13
It communicates that entire complex social idea instantly.
3:17
The New York Times used it to illustrate a story about the stock market.
3:22
A Polish city used it to promote public transport.
3:26
It's achieved a level of fluency that few images ever do.
3:30
It's so strange to think that this incredibly versatile, global piece of communication...
3:36
started with a guy named Antonio trying to get his models to stop laughing in Spain.
3:42
And the irony is that the format itself is about distraction and novelty, which is the very engine of the internet culture that made it famous.
3:52
The meme is about the thing that created it.
3:56
It’s self-referential.
3:57
So we've created this perfect little narrative capsule for talking about our own fleeting attention spans.
4:05
That feels...
4:06
a little too perfect.
4:07
It is.
4:08
And it makes you wonder what happens when our most common, most universal proverbs are no longer spoken words passed down through generations, but are instead stock photos owned by Getty Images.
