0:00 The Trump administration is getting ready to hit the tech sector with a new round of tariffs.0:06 And this isn't just about microchips anymore.0:09 Last week, in episode ninety-four, we talked about the Senate taking on crypto.0:14 But this new move from the White House could hit way, way harder, because the target list is expanding to include the finished products that use those chips.0:24 We’re talking laptops, gaming consoles, and the massive data center equipment that powers the entire internet.0:32 So, the stated goal here is pretty straightforward: protect and reshore the American semiconductor supply chain.0:39 Bring manufacturing back to the U.S.0:41 Sounds good.0:42 The problem is, a key part of the plan, which is set to become effective in December, has a massive, almost unbelievable flaw.0:51 It all comes down to one material you've probably never heard of: polysilicon.0:56 Polysilicon is the ultra-pure base material for semiconductor-grade chips.1:01 It's foundational.1:02 Without it, you can't make the advanced chips that run everything.1:06 And here’s the turn.1:07 The United States has exactly TWO companies that produce this stuff domestically.1:13 Two.1:13 Meanwhile, China absolutely dominates the global market.1:17 So you’d think the new rules would be laser-focused on boosting those two American producers, right?1:23 Creating incentives, requiring companies to buy American-made polysilicon.1:28 They don't.1:29 The rules, as written, do nothing to support the use of U.S.-made polysilicon.1:34 Think about that.1:35 The policy is designed to build a secure American supply chain, but it ignores the very first link in that chain.1:43 It's like building a fortress but forgetting to manufacture bricks.1:47 Nick Iacovella from the Coalition for a Prosperous America put it bluntly.1:52 He said, "Without a clear signal that domestic polysilicon will be the foundation...1:58 we risk ceding to...1:59 adversarial nations like China.2:01 That is a direct national security threat." He's saying the policy could achieve the EXACT opposite of its intended goal.2:09 This isn't some abstract policy debate.2:12 This has immediate consequences for some of the biggest names in tech.2:16 Take a company like Western Digital.2:19 They have a market cap of one hundred sixty-five point seven billion dollars, and they supply the data storage hardware that is the backbone of hyperscale cloud and AI data centers.2:31 If these tariffs expand to server and storage equipment, their costs could spike.2:36 Their entire global supply chain gets thrown into chaos.2:40 And they're not alone.2:41 AMD is another company directly in the crosshairs.2:45 And this creates a huge paradox for the administration's other big goal: winning the AI race.2:51 Tech companies are already warning that making it more expensive to build AI infrastructure in the United States could seriously hamper that effort.3:01 You can't have a policy to dominate AI on one hand, and a policy that makes building AI prohibitively expensive on the other.3:09 The two are in direct conflict.3:11 And for companies like Western Digital, the uncertainty is paralyzing.3:15 Do you make big investments now?3:18 Do you re-route your supply chains based on a proposal that might change?3:22 The regulatory risk is enormous, and it could freeze decision-making right when we need to be moving faster.3:30 This isn't just a hypothetical, either.3:32 We've seen this movie before.3:34 A few years ago, the same administration put tariffs on steel and aluminum to help U.S.3:40 producers.3:41 The result?3:41 According to a Reuters analysis, it ended up raising costs for U.S.3:46 automakers and damaging their competitiveness.3:49 The policy hurt one of the very industries it was supposed to aid.3:53 So now, as the White House says it "continues to engage with industry stakeholders," you have to ask if they're listening to the right things.4:03 The core of the strategy is to decouple from potential adversaries.4:07 But the details of the policy — the fine print about one single, critical material — risk doing the opposite.4:14 It could end up cementing our reliance on the very supply chains we’re trying to escape.4:20 The policy is meant to build a wall, but it's creating a dependency that runs right underneath it.
