0:00 OpenAI just offered the U.S.0:01 government a FIVE percent stake in the company.0:04 Yesterday, in episode forty-eight, we talked about how AI chips are rewriting market rules, but this is something else entirely.0:13 This is an attempt to rewrite the social contract.0:16 Before we get into what that even means, here’s what else moved.0:20 The U.S.0:20 labor market just hit a wall.0:22 The June jobs report came in way, way under expectations, adding only fifty-seven thousand jobs when analysts were looking for more than one hundred and thirteen thousand.0:33 That snaps a three-month streak of growth over one hundred thousand, a clear sign the economy is cooling down, which could ripple through tech hiring and investment for the rest of the year.0:46 Meanwhile, the IPO market is getting dangerously crowded.0:49 We're on track for a two hundred billion dollar wave of new stock listings in 2026.0:55 After SpaceX raised seventy-five billion, bankers are worried there just isn't enough cash to go around.1:01 The fear is that to buy into these new, hot companies, investors will have to sell their existing holdings, potentially triggering a one trillion dollar wipeout in market value.1:13 And it’s not just public markets feeling the heat.1:16 Venture capital in defense tech is officially in a bubble.1:20 VCs just poured a record nineteen point eight billion dollars into defense startups in the first quarter.1:26 That's up from just five point seven billion a year ago.1:30 Companies are getting valuations fifty times their revenue...1:34 which almost never ends well.1:36 Finally, proving the demand for AI infrastructure is still off the charts, a startup you might not have heard of called Crusoe is in talks to raise three billion dollars.1:47 That deal would triple its valuation to around thirty billion.1:51 They essentially build data centers powered by otherwise wasted energy, and right now, that's a golden ticket.1:58 Okay, let's go back to that OpenAI offer.2:00 Because this is the story that will echo for months.2:04 Sam Altman went directly to President Trump and his cabinet with this idea.2:09 The proposal isn't just a symbolic gesture.2:11 Based on OpenAI's latest valuation of eight hundred and fifty-two billion dollars, that five percent stake is worth forty-two point six billion dollars.2:21 Today.2:22 Here's the turn.2:23 The plan is NOT for that money to just go into the U.S.2:26 Treasury.2:27 The pitch is to use it to create a SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUND.2:30 Think of it like Alaska's Permanent Fund, which takes oil revenue and pays out an annual dividend to every resident.2:38 The idea here is that as AI generates unprecedented wealth, every American citizen would get a share of the profits.2:45 A direct deposit from the AI revolution.2:48 So, what's really going on?2:50 On one hand, it's a brilliant move to get ahead of the inevitable backlash.2:54 The biggest fear around AI isn't just job loss, it's wealth concentration on a scale we've never seen before.3:01 This proposal directly addresses that fear.3:04 It says, "Don't worry, we'll cut you in." It reframes OpenAI from a private company into a kind of national utility.3:12 But on the other hand… it’s an incredibly shrewd strategic play.3:16 By offering the government a stake, OpenAI is trying to tie its own success to the national interest.3:22 It makes it much harder for regulators to crack down on them or for competitors to argue they should be broken up.3:30 How do you attack a company that's sending a check to every voter?3:34 It's a preemptive move to become too integrated to fail.3:38 This has never been done before.3:40 A private tech company voluntarily offering a slice of itself to the public to create a national fund.3:46 It's a radical proposal that sits right on the line between genuine public good and corporate self-preservation.3:53 And that's the real question you should be asking.3:57 Is this a gift to the American people, or is it the most expensive and sophisticated lobbying effort in history?4:04 This isn't just about money or market share anymore.4:07 This is about power.4:08 OpenAI isn't just building artificial intelligence; it's trying to build the political and economic framework for the world that intelligence will create.4:18 They're not waiting for Washington to write the rules.4:22 They're showing up with the rules already written, and a check attached.
