About this episode
Cutting through the noise—get the real movers in US tech, sharp and caffeinated, every morning.
0:00
Today, for the first time since twenty eighteen, someone not named Jerome Powell is running the Federal Reserve's meeting.
0:07
That's right, new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is at the helm, and his first day could change the entire game for tech.
0:15
Last episode, we talked about the mission of this show—finding the signal in your daily tech wake-up call.
0:22
Well, today that signal is coming straight from the top of the US economy, and it’s a big one.
0:28
First, the headlines.
0:29
The S&P 500's tech sector is still riding an incredible wave, capping a seventy-eight percent gain over the last three years almost entirely on the back of AI optimism.
0:40
But this morning, the futures market is tapping the brakes.
0:44
Nasdaq futures are down about a quarter of a percent.
0:48
The VIX—the market’s fear gauge—is actually dropping, which is a weirdly calm signal for a day with so much on the line.
0:56
It tells you nobody really knows which way to jump.
0:59
Meanwhile, in the world of chips, everyone's holding their breath.
1:03
TSMC is literally telling investors it’s trying to "cut through the macro noise" ahead of its earnings.
1:10
They're basically admitting it's hard to see the road ahead.
1:14
We've got a Q3 preview for Micron that has analysts completely split—one says buy, the other says downgrade.
1:21
And while everyone waits for Nvidia's "next act" in the second half of the year, Adobe just posted Q2 earnings that showed continued deceleration.
1:31
Not a crash, but a slowdown.
1:32
At the same time, old-guard IBM just got a major rating upgrade, with analysts saying its "next big tailwind has arrived." So you have one giant slowing, another one supposedly speeding up.
1:45
That’s the kind of noise we’re talking about.
1:48
Okay, let's go back to the Fed.
1:50
Because this is the story that could overwrite everything else.
1:54
Kevin Warsh isn't just a new face; he represents a potential philosophical U-turn for the central bank.
2:01
For years, you’ve been conditioned to expect the Fed to signal its moves months in advance, to soothe markets, to basically tell you what the answers to the test are going to be.
2:12
Warsh has openly said he thinks the Fed has offered too much guidance.
2:17
He wants to cut back.
2:18
He’s also been vocal about wanting to shrink the Fed’s balance sheet, which has ballooned to an almost incomprehensible six-point-six trillion dollars.
2:28
Trillion.
2:29
So what does that mean for you?
2:31
For tech?
2:31
The easy-money environment that has fueled rocket-ship valuations and speculative growth could be over.
2:38
A Fed that’s less predictable, more tight-lipped, and actively trying to pull money out of the system is a very different beast.
2:46
It means the cost of capital goes up.
2:49
It means companies that aren't actually profitable can't just survive on cheap debt and hype forever.
2:55
It forces a reckoning.
2:57
And it's all starting today.
2:59
This isn't just noise; it’s a fundamental change in the physics of the market.
3:04
And that brings us to the other big story: the AI bull run hitting a wall of reality.
3:09
That seventy-eight percent S&P gain?
3:12
It was easy when the story was simple: AI is coming, buy tech.
3:16
But now the details are starting to matter again.
3:19
Look at Adobe.
3:20
Its creative tools are packed with AI, but it's still decelerating.
3:24
Why?
3:25
Competition, market saturation, maybe its AI isn't the game-changer everyone hoped.
3:30
Look at CrowdStrike—a cybersecurity powerhouse whose stock is now described as "too pricey to buy, too promising to sell." That’s the definition of a standoff.
3:40
The market has priced in perfection, and now the company has to actually deliver it, quarter after quarter.
3:48
This is the hard part.
3:49
This is where the simple narrative breaks down.
3:52
It's not just about having an AI strategy anymore.
3:55
It’s about whether that strategy is actually working, whether it's generating profit, whether it can survive a world where money isn't cheap and investors demand results, not just a good story.
4:08
The era of every tech stock rising on the same AI tide is ending.
4:12
The new Fed chair wants to make things less predictable, and the market is finally starting to ask the hard questions.
4:20
From here on out, it’s not about the macro noise—it's about the signal from each individual company.
4:26
And that signal just got a lot harder to find.
