0:00 The 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom had more than eighty thousand cheese sandwiches.0:06 And two thousand buses, over forty chartered trains, and just eight weeks to plan the entire thing.0:13 A quarter of a million people descending on the capital.0:17 Eight weeks!0:18 That's a logistical nightmare.0:20 It’s exactly what we were exploring last week—the unsung witnesses who make these massive historical moments actually happen behind the scenes.0:30 And the central coordinator for the March, the person pulling all those threads together, was a woman named Anna Arnold Hedgeman.0:39 I have to admit, I don't know her name.0:41 Who was she?0:42 She was the only woman on the March's administrative committee.0:46 The only one.0:47 And she came to the job with this incredible resume—she’d been the executive director of the National Council for a Permanent Fair Employment Practices Commission, she was an assistant to the mayor of New York City...1:02 she was a force.1:03 So a total powerhouse.1:05 Why was she the only woman in a room full of men planning a march for freedom?1:10 That’s the question she kept asking herself.1:13 She was the one who had initially proposed the march to movement leaders A.1:18 Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin.1:21 But once the "Big Six" leaders got involved, she was often treated like staff, not a peer.1:27 They tasked her with the monumental job of outreach.1:31 What did that involve?1:32 It meant she was the one who wrote to forty thousand white Protestant churches, asking them to show up.1:39 That effort is a huge reason the crowd was as diverse as it was.1:44 She was the connective tissue of the entire operation.1:47 So she's building the coalition, getting people in the door...1:52 She's doing the work.1:53 And then, just days before the event, she’s reviewing the plan, the official program for the day.2:00 And she realizes something is profoundly wrong.2:03 What was it?2:04 There were no women scheduled to speak.2:06 Not one.2:07 Wait, really?2:08 For the entire March on Washington, with all its iconic speeches, not a single woman was going to have a voice on the main stage?2:17 Not a one.2:17 And Hedgeman was furious.2:19 She immediately wrote a memo to the leadership.2:22 She argued that the movement was being built on the backs of women—from local organizers to figures like Rosa Parks and Daisy Bates—and now they were being rendered invisible at its most visible moment.2:36 That's an incredible act of courage.2:39 To stand up to the biggest names in the movement right before their big day.2:44 She forced a confrontation.2:46 She held a mirror up to the organizers and asked if they were truly fighting for everyone's freedom, or just their own.2:54 So what happened?2:55 Did they add a female speaker?2:57 They compromised.2:58 They wouldn't give a woman a full speaking slot, but they added a short "Tribute to Negro Women Fighters for Freedom," which was presented by Daisy Bates.3:09 It was a token, in some ways.3:11 But it was a token that would not have existed without Anna Arnold Hedgeman.3:16 She refused to let them be erased.3:19 So she was the conscience of the March.3:21 Not just the organizer, but the one pushing them to live up to their own ideals.3:27 She was.3:27 She handled the logistics, the outreach, the invisible labor that made the day a success.3:33 But her most profound contribution was fighting for the soul of the event itself.3:39 It's a pattern we see everywhere in history.3:42 The "housekeeping of the revolution," as they say.3:45 Exactly.3:46 The work that makes everything possible, but is rarely seen as the 'real' work.3:51 She secured the foundation so that others could stand on the stage and be heard.3:57 Her name wasn't in the headlines.3:59 But without her, the March on Washington would have been a very different event.4:05 If it happened at all.4:06 It makes you wonder.4:08 How many other crucial moments in our history were held together by someone we've simply never been taught to see?
