0:00 On March tenth, 1876, a man in a Boston laboratory heard a voice from another room say, "Mr.0:06 Watson—Come here—I want to see you." And with that, Thomas A.0:10 Watson became the first person in human history to hear a voice over a telephone.0:16 It’s funny, Admin, in our last episode on unsung architects, we talked about people who were right there at the turning point.0:25 Watson wasn't just there; he was the other half of the moment.0:29 He was the "Mr.0:30 Watson" in the famous sentence.0:33 But who was he?0:34 I always just pictured, you know, a generic assistant.0:38 Oh, he was so much more.0:39 He wasn't a scientist or an academic like Alexander Graham Bell.0:44 He was a machinist, a really good one, working in a shop that built models for inventors.0:50 Bell was a customer.0:52 So he was the hands, and Bell was the brain?0:55 That's the simple version, but it's deeper than that.0:58 Bell had the theory of acoustics, this grand idea.1:02 But he didn't know how to build the thing.1:05 Watson did.1:06 He was the one who could take Bell’s sketches and, uh, turn them into actual metal and wire.1:12 He worked tirelessly, often late into the night, trying one failed prototype after another.1:19 Wait—so he wasn't just following blueprints.1:22 He was part of the problem-solving.1:24 He was THE problem-solving, in many ways.1:27 There's this key moment before the famous call.1:30 They were working on a different device, a harmonic telegraph.1:35 Watson accidentally plucked a steel reed on the transmitter, and Bell, in the other room, heard the corresponding reed on his receiver vibrate.1:45 That was the eureka moment.1:47 That sound proved Bell's theory could work.1:50 And it was Watson's hand that made the sound.1:53 Wow.1:53 So without that specific action, from that specific person… They might have gotten there eventually.2:01 But maybe not.2:02 That happy accident, born from Watson's practical work, was the breakthrough.2:07 Bell was brilliant, but his ideas were stuck on paper until Watson made them real.2:13 You know, this dynamic feels so familiar.2:16 The visionary who gets all the credit and the engineer who actually builds the thing.2:22 Right.2:22 It's the classic pattern.2:24 Where have we seen it before?2:26 I mean, you could almost say Watson was the Steve Wozniak to Bell’s Steve Jobs.2:32 Oh, that's a great comparison.2:34 Wozniak building the Apple I board by hand while Jobs is crafting the vision.2:39 Exactly.2:40 The analogy works because it's about that essential partnership between the idea and the implementation.2:47 But here's where the analogy breaks down, and it's important.2:51 Okay.2:52 Wozniak is famous.2:53 You know?2:54 We know who Woz is.2:55 But Watson?2:56 He's a name in a sentence.2:58 He was almost completely absorbed into Bell's shadow, historically speaking.3:03 He was the first listener, but the world only really remembers the first speaker.3:09 So what happened to him?3:10 After "Mr.3:11 Watson, come here," did he just fade away?3:14 Not at all.3:15 And this is the part I love.3:17 He got very, very rich from his shares in the Bell Telephone Company.3:22 But he didn't just, you know, buy a yacht and disappear.3:26 He quit at age twenty-seven because he found the telephone business boring once the inventing was done.3:33 He quit?3:34 After inventing the TELEPHONE?3:36 Yep.3:36 And then he just… lived.3:38 He tried farming.3:39 He became a professional Shakespearean actor and toured the country.3:44 He started one of the biggest shipbuilding companies in America at the Fore River Shipyard.3:50 He even ran for socialist state representative in Massachusetts.3:55 His life after the telephone was arguably more varied than his life before it.4:00 That’s incredible.4:02 It’s like being the first witness to this world-changing thing freed him up to do anything he wanted.4:09 I think that's exactly it.4:11 He wasn't defined by being "the assistant." He was the man who heard the call, answered it, and then went on to have a dozen other adventures.4:21 It poses a question, doesn't it?4:23 Maybe the most important person isn't the one with the big idea, but the one who has the skill to make it happen and the wisdom to know when to walk away and build something new.
