0:00 On January fifteenth, 1947, a woman walking with her child in a vacant Los Angeles lot saw what she thought was a discarded mannequin.0:10 It wasn't.0:11 This case is one of those twisted paths we walk together, a case so dark it has defied an answer for over seventy-five years.0:21 Her name was Elizabeth Short.0:23 She was twenty-two.0:25 The body was found naked, severed at the waist with surgical precision, and posed.0:31 All the blood had been drained from her body...0:35 somewhere else.0:36 There was no blood at the scene.0:39 The cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage and shock from what the autopsy called extensive torture.0:47 Within fifty-six minutes, the FBI had a name.0:50 Her fingerprints were on file from an underage drinking arrest.0:55 And with that name, the story began to write itself.0:59 The press, inspired by a current film noir, called her the Black Dahlia.1:05 And here’s where the system starts to feed on itself.1:09 The media coverage wasn't just reporting; it was creating a mythology.1:15 The more sensational the headlines, the more the public became obsessed.1:21 That obsession produced a flood of tips and confessions.1:25 More than SIXTY in the initial investigation.1:29 Over five hundred in the years since.1:32 A sergeant on the case, John St.1:34 John, once said, "It is amazing how many people offer up a relative as the killer." Think about that.1:42 Seven hundred and fifty officers from the LAPD were on this, their biggest case in twenty years, and they were drowning.1:52 Drowning in lies, in delusions, in people wanting their fifteen minutes of fame attached to a brutal murder.2:01 The public's fascination, fueled by the papers, was burying the actual evidence under an avalanche of noise.2:09 The search for the killer was being killed by the search for the killer.2:15 So who was behind the precision?2:17 Who had the skill?2:19 The police suspected a doctor, someone with surgical training.2:24 They looked at students from the USC Medical School.2:28 Nothing.2:29 But one name keeps circling back, a ghost in the machine of this investigation.2:35 Dr.2:35 George Hodel.2:36 A prominent Los Angeles physician.2:39 He had the skills.2:40 He had the means.2:42 And when the police bugged his house, they caught something on tape.2:47 Here's the quote: "Supposin’ I did kill the Black Dahlia.2:52 They can’t prove it now.2:54 They can’t talk to my secretary anymore because she’s dead." That should have been it.3:00 Right?3:01 But it wasn't.3:02 Hodel was never charged.3:04 His own son, a former LAPD detective himself, would later write a book accusing him, convinced of his guilt.3:12 But other investigators, like author William J.3:16 Mann, push back.3:17 They point out there is ZERO concrete evidence that George Hodel and Elizabeth Short ever even met.3:25 The timeline doesn't support it.3:28 So what does that leave you with?3:31 A chilling, but maybe circumstantial, confession?3:34 Or another dead end?3:36 There were other suspects.3:38 A boyfriend with surgical training, Marvin Margolis.3:42 A powerful newspaper publisher, Norman Chandler.3:46 Robert "Red" Manley, the last man known to see her alive.3:51 Each one a thread that leads nowhere.3:54 The case was never about a lack of suspects.3:57 It was about an excess of them.4:00 An excess of everything.4:01 Too much press, too many confessions, too many theories.4:06 The feedback loop spun out of control.4:09 The story became bigger than the facts.4:12 The legend became more important than the victim.4:16 And in that confusion, the killer walked.4:19 This case isn't unsolved because of a brilliant criminal who left no clues.4:25 It’s unsolved because the investigation became a public spectacle, and the truth was the first casualty.
