0:00 The first letter signed “Jack the Ripper” and sent to the Central News Agency was almost certainly a hoax, written by a journalist to sell more papers.0:13 It’s the letter that gave the killer his name, and turned a murderer into a legend.0:21 Last week we walked through the shadows of history’s greatest mysteries.0:27 But this case… this file isn’t just a shadow.0:31 It’s a fog that settled over London in 1888 and has never truly lifted.0:38 The file is cold.0:39 The ink is faded.0:41 But the blood is still there, if you know where to look.0:46 It starts in August.0:48 Whitechapel.0:49 A district of filth and desperation, of gaslight and gin.0:54 The first body is Mary Ann Nichols.0:57 Her throat was cut twice, deep.1:00 Then came the mutilation.1:02 It was brutal.1:03 It was shocking.1:05 But in the slums of London, violence wasn't exactly news.1:10 Then, eight days later, Annie Chapman.1:13 Same method, but worse.1:15 More precise.1:16 The killer took her uterus.1:19 The police, the press, the public...1:22 they started to pay attention.1:25 This wasn't just murder.1:27 This was something else.1:29 A pattern was emerging.1:31 A signature.1:32 The police were lost.1:34 The Metropolitan Police force was only a few decades old, and they had nothing.1:41 No fingerprints.1:43 No DNA.1:43 No real forensic science.1:46 They were walking the streets, knocking on doors, interviewing thousands of people in a district where no one trusted them and everyone had a reason to lie.2:00 They found a piece of a victim's bloody apron near some graffiti—the Goulston Street Graffito.2:08 And the police commissioner, Sir Charles Warren, ordered it washed away before dawn, fearing it would incite anti-Semitic riots.2:20 A clue, perhaps the only real one, erased.2:24 They were chasing a ghost in a city of ghosts.2:28 And then came the "double event." September thirtieth.2:33 In one night, Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes were killed.2:38 Stride’s murder was interrupted—the killer was likely scared off—so he went looking for another victim.2:48 He found Eddowes.2:49 An hour later, her body was discovered in Mitre Square.2:54 This time, he took her left kidney and part of her uterus.3:00 He was getting bolder.3:01 He was getting better.3:03 The final canonical victim was Mary Jane Kelly.3:08 This was different.3:09 This was indoors.3:11 What the killer did to her in the privacy of her small room at 13 Miller’s Court… it’s almost indescribable.3:21 He had hours.3:22 And he used them.3:23 When the landlord's man peered through the broken window pane, the scene was so horrific he couldn't even identify her.3:34 So who was he?3:35 That’s the question that keeps this file open on my desk.3:41 The theories are a graveyard of reputations.3:45 There was Montague John Druitt, a barrister from a good family, who was found drowned in the Thames a month after the last murder.3:56 A coincidence?3:58 Maybe.3:58 There was Aaron Kosminski, a Polish immigrant and hairdresser who lived in the heart of Whitechapel and suffered from severe mental illness.4:11 He was a prime suspect for the head of the CID at the time.4:16 Then there was George Chapman, another Polish immigrant, a surgeon who was later hanged for poisoning three of his wives.4:27 Even the Queen thought it was him.4:30 The problem isn't a lack of suspects.4:33 It's the opposite.4:35 The case file is thick with them.4:38 Too many ghosts.4:39 The real horror of the Ripper case isn't the violence.4:44 It's the silence that followed.4:47 The killer, whoever he was, just… stopped.4:51 He melted back into the fog of London.4:54 He went back to his life.4:57 He bought groceries.4:58 He read the newspaper accounts of his own savagery.5:03 He might have died of old age, a quiet grandfather in a rocking chair.5:09 That's the psychological toll of a case like this.5:14 It’s not a whodunit.5:16 It’s a void.5:17 We keep staring into it, hoping to see a face, but all we see is our own reflection, asking the same question for over a century.5:28 The Ripper wasn't just a man.5:31 He was the first modern media monster, a story that became more real than the person behind it.5:39 He proved that you could commit unspeakable acts in the biggest city on earth, and simply… get away.
