0:00 Rescuers at the Bath Consolidated School found five hundred pounds of unexploded dynamite still wired in the south wing.0:10 It meant the man who had just murdered thirty-eight children intended to kill EVERY single person in that building.0:19 Last week, we uncovered the story of Boston’s Great Molasses Flood, a disaster buried by corporate denial.0:28 This week’s crime was buried by something else entirely.0:33 By the sheer, paralyzing shock of it.0:36 The story begins not with a bang, but with a quiet, meticulous rage.0:42 In the archives, the documents paint a chilling picture of a man named Andrew Kehoe.0:49 He was the school board treasurer for Bath Township, Michigan.0:54 An insider.0:55 And for months leading into the spring of 1927, he used that access to secretly plant dynamite and pyrotol—a volatile surplus explosive from World War One—beneath the floorboards of the new school.1:11 The records show he rigged it all to a single alarm clock, set for nine forty-five in the morning.1:19 Before he left his farm on May eighteenth, he murdered his wife, Nellie.1:25 Then he wired his own house and barn with explosives and burned them to the ground.1:32 He was erasing his entire world before turning his attention to the town's children.1:39 At 9:45 a.m., just as the clock hands aligned, the north wing of the Bath Consolidated School disintegrated.1:48 The roof and the second story pancaked down onto the first-floor classrooms.1:55 One witness testimony, tucked away in a county file for decades, describes children being blasted through the air.2:04 An author who studied the case wrote of seven-year-old Doris Johns, her body suspended by her heels from a second-story window, "limp and torn like a discarded rag doll." Rescuers flooded the scene.2:21 Parents clawed at the rubble with their bare hands.2:25 But the architect of this horror wasn't finished.2:29 About thirty minutes into the rescue effort, Andrew Kehoe drove his truck toward the school.2:37 The superintendent, Emory Huyck—a man Kehoe had clashed with on the school board—was pulling children from the wreckage.2:47 Kehoe pulled up, raised a rifle, and detonated his truck.2:52 It was packed with dynamite and shrapnel.2:55 The blast killed him, Superintendent Huyck, and several others, including a little boy who had survived the first explosion.3:06 In total, forty-five people were murdered.3:09 Thirty-eight of them were children.3:12 Fifty-eight more were injured.3:15 It remains, to this day, the deadliest act of mass murder at a school in United States history.3:22 So how does the deadliest school massacre in American history just… disappear from public memory?3:31 For a time, it was international news.3:34 The town was swarmed by reporters and what one producer called "gawkers." But the trauma was too immense.3:43 The community, shattered, tried to rebuild and move on.3:47 The story faded, overshadowed by the Great Depression, then World War Two, then decades of other headlines.3:56 It became a local horror story, a whisper.4:00 A crime too terrible to hold in the light.4:03 The evidence was never truly lost.4:06 It was just waiting in a box, in the dark, for someone willing to look inside.
