0:00 Five eyewitnesses pointed to Kirk Bloodsworth.0:04 And every single one of them was wrong.0:07 It was 1985.0:08 The courtroom in Baltimore County was suffocating.0:13 You could feel the certainty from the prosecution, the jury.0:18 They had their man.0:20 A former Marine, a waterman from the Eastern Shore, now accused of the brutal rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl, Dawn Hamilton.0:32 When the verdict came down — guilty — it wasn't a shock.0:38 It was an inevitability.0:40 A terrible, grinding machine reaching its logical conclusion.0:45 And I sat there, watching them sentence an innocent man to death, and I knew, I just knew, something was profoundly broken.0:57 The whole case was a house of cards built on a sinkhole.1:02 It started with an anonymous tip.1:05 Then came the eyewitnesses.1:07 Two of them couldn't even pick Bloodsworth out of a lineup at first.1:14 Not until they saw his face plastered on the news.1:18 Suddenly, their memory "improved." They gave descriptions of a tall, skinny man with blond hair.1:27 Kirk Bloodsworth was shorter, stockier, with reddish hair.1:32 It didn't matter.1:34 The police had their suspect, and the story bent to fit him.1:39 His own wife and mother-in-law swore he was home with them.1:45 Ignored.1:45 The prosecution claimed shoe prints on the victim's body matched his shoes.1:52 A shoe store owner testified the marks were two sizes too small.1:58 It didn't matter.2:00 His first conviction was thrown out because prosecutors hid a report about another, more likely suspect.2:09 So what did they do?2:11 They just tried him again.2:14 This time, he got two life sentences instead of death.2:19 A small mercy from a system that refused to see its own mistakes.2:24 For nearly nine years, Kirk sat in a cell, an innocent man buried alive by lies and incompetence.2:33 Then, from the silence of a prison library, a whisper.2:38 A new kind of science.2:40 Something called DNA testing.2:43 Bloodsworth read about it and latched on.2:47 It was his only hope.2:49 His lawyers fought.2:50 They had to find the evidence, which had been sitting for years in a paper bag in a judge’s chambers.3:00 Think about that.3:01 The key to a man’s life, tucked away and forgotten in a paper bag.3:07 They finally got approval.3:10 A specialist named Dr.3:12 Edward Blake ran the tests on semen stains found on the victim's clothing.3:19 Everyone held their breath.3:21 The results came back.3:23 The DNA did not belong to Kirk Bloodsworth.3:27 It was conclusive.3:29 It was absolute.3:30 It had never been him.3:32 On June 28th, 1993, after eight years, eleven months, and nineteen days, Kirk Bloodsworth walked out of prison.3:42 He was the first American death row inmate ever to be exonerated by DNA.3:49 But justice wasn't complete.3:51 The system that was so eager to convict an innocent man took another ten years—a full decade—to use that same DNA to find the real killer, Kimberly Shay Ruffner, who had been free the entire time.4:09 Kirk was granted a pardon.4:12 But you can't pardon someone for something they didn't do.4:17 All you can do is admit you were wrong.4:21 Kirk Bloodsworth didn't just want his life back.4:25 He wanted to make sure this never happened again.4:30 The man they tried to kill became the man who helped kill the death penalty in Maryland.4:38 He took the system’s worst failure… and turned it into his life’s mission.
