0:00 On January 15, 1919, a wave of industrial sweetener moved through Boston at an estimated thirty-five miles per hour.0:07 Mm-hm.0:08 This follows our report last week on the Greek village that officially declared war on storks.0:14 Correct.0:15 The theme of unbelievable but documented events continues.0:19 In this case, the event was the Great Molasses Flood.0:22 The source was a single storage tank in Boston's North End, owned by the Purity Distilling Company.0:29 And this was a large tank.0:31 Fifty feet tall, ninety feet in diameter.0:34 It held approximately 2.3 million gallons of crude molasses.0:38 What was the purpose of that much molasses in downtown Boston?0:42 It was destined for fermentation into industrial alcohol.0:46 United States Industrial Alcohol, the parent company, was a primary supplier of alcohol for munitions manufacturing during World War I.0:55 This particular shipment had just arrived from the Caribbean.0:59 So it was war material, essentially.1:02 It was a component of war material.1:04 Shortly after noon on that day, witnesses reported hearing a low rumble, followed by what they described as a roar, or a sound like a machine gun, as the rivets shot out of the tank's steel plates.1:17 Then the entire structure failed.1:20 All at once.1:20 Completely.1:21 The failure released the entire volume of molasses in an instant.1:26 It formed a wave estimated to be twenty-five feet high at its peak and one hundred and sixty feet wide.1:33 Moving at thirty-five miles per hour.1:35 That is the accepted engineering estimate.1:38 The wave was powerful enough to knock buildings off their foundations.1:43 It buckled the elevated railway tracks of the Boston Elevated Railway, and it picked up a freight train car and threw it partly off the tracks.1:53 What was the human toll?1:54 The immediate destruction was significant.1:57 The wave engulfed everything in its path, including people, horses, and wagons.2:02 The official casualty count was twenty-one fatalities and one hundred and fifty injured.2:08 The cause of death being...2:10 drowning?2:11 Not precisely.2:12 The substance was 1.4 times as dense as water.2:15 The force of the wave itself caused significant blunt-force trauma.2:20 Debris carried within the molasses—pieces of the tank, fragments of buildings—also caused fatal injuries.2:27 For those trapped, the problem was the viscosity.2:30 It's too thick to swim in.2:32 Correct.2:32 And the day was unseasonably warm for January, around forty degrees Fahrenheit.2:38 But when the molasses met the cold surfaces of the street, it began to cool and thicken rapidly.2:44 Rescuers had difficulty reaching victims who were encased in it.2:49 Many of the deaths were attributed to asphyxiation.2:52 So the rescue effort itself was a challenge.2:55 It was.2:56 The entire neighborhood was coated in a sticky layer that was, in some places, two to three feet deep.3:03 The fire department's high-pressure water hoses were ineffective.3:07 They eventually pumped saltwater from the harbor to wash the molasses from the cobblestone streets into the sewer system.3:15 The Boston Harbor reportedly remained brown until summer.3:19 Was there an official cause determined for the tank's failure?3:23 Yes.3:24 A multi-year class-action lawsuit followed, one of the first in Massachusetts history.3:29 The investigation found the tank was poorly designed and constructed.3:34 The steel was too thin—half the thickness it should have been for a tank of its size.3:40 It was just built incorrectly.3:42 Fundamentally so.3:43 It was also never properly tested.3:45 Standard procedure would have been to fill it with water first, but the company filled it directly with molasses.3:53 Furthermore, residents had reported for years that the tank leaked.3:58 Rivet holes would weep brown streaks down the side.4:01 And the company's response?4:03 They painted the tank brown, which camouflaged the leaks.4:07 The final trigger for the collapse is believed to have been thermal stress.4:12 A new, warmer shipment of molasses had been pumped into the tank, causing the colder molasses already inside to expand.4:20 The structure could not withstand the additional pressure.4:24 So it was a known problem.4:26 It was a documented risk.4:27 For decades after the event, residents of the North End claimed that on hot summer days, they could still smell the faint, sweet scent of molasses.
