0:00 On the night of September 21st, 1788, an Austrian army of up to one hundred thousand men fought a pitched battle… against itself.0:09 You know, last week we covered Australia losing a war to emus, and I thought that was the peak for military blunders.0:18 Right.0:19 But this one might be the purest example of a self-inflicted wound in history.0:24 It happened during the Austro-Turkish War, near a town in modern-day Romania called Karansebes.0:32 The Austrian army was there to stop the Ottoman Empire.0:36 And they did, technically, stop themselves first.0:40 Exactly.0:40 So the army sets up camp.0:42 It's a huge force, maybe eighty or a hundred thousand soldiers.0:47 And crucially, it's a multi-ethnic army.0:50 You have Austrians, Serbs, Croats, Italians, Poles… a lot of men who couldn't speak to each other.0:57 Which is already a problem waiting to happen.1:01 So what was the spark?1:02 Schnapps.1:03 A group of hussars—they were the advance scouts—were sent to check for Ottoman troops.1:10 They didn't find any.1:11 What they did find was a group of Romani travelers selling barrels of schnapps.1:17 Oh, I see where this is going.1:19 They buy the alcohol and start drinking.1:22 Heavily.1:23 A little while later, a column of infantry shows up, sees the party, and wants in.1:29 The hussars refuse to share.1:31 So a drunken argument breaks out.1:34 It escalates.1:35 There's a fistfight.1:36 Someone fires a gun.1:38 And back at the main camp, in the dark, all they hear is a gunshot.1:43 And panic sets in.1:44 The soldiers in the main camp assume the Ottomans are attacking.1:49 Someone starts shouting "Turci!1:51 Turci!"—which means "Turks!1:53 Turks!" Right.1:55 And this is where the language barrier becomes catastrophic.1:59 Some of the soldiers, particularly the Slavic troops, reportedly misheard "Turci" as "Allahu," which they associated with the Ottoman battle cry.2:10 It just amplified the chaos.2:12 So now you have the drunken hussars running back towards the camp, trying to rejoin their lines.2:19 But it's dark.2:21 And the officers back at the camp see a mass of riders charging at them.2:26 They assume it's the Ottoman cavalry.2:29 So an Austrian artillery commander gives the order to open fire.2:34 They start shelling their own scouts.2:36 They start shelling their own scouts.2:39 And from there, it just completely falls apart.2:43 The entire army thinks it's under attack from all sides.2:47 Regiments start firing at each other in the confusion.2:51 No one can tell friend from foe.2:54 And Emperor Joseph the Second is there for all of this.2:58 He is.2:58 He's trying to ride through the chaos, shouting "Halt!3:02 Halt!" in German, but very few soldiers can understand him.3:07 At one point, he gets separated from his own staff and just wanders off, lost.3:13 So what’s the final toll of this… battle?3:16 The numbers are debated, which is probably because of how embarrassing the whole incident was.3:23 Some early accounts claim as many as ten thousand casualties.3:27 Ten thousand?3:28 From friendly fire?3:30 Um, yeah.3:31 More modern historians think that's an exaggeration.3:34 The real number might be closer to a thousand or fifteen hundred.3:39 But even that is a STAGGERING loss for a battle with no enemy.3:44 And then the actual enemy shows up.3:47 Two days later.3:48 The Ottoman army arrives, expecting a major fight.3:52 Instead, they find the field littered with dead and wounded Austrian soldiers.3:58 The Austrian army is completely disorganized and demoralized.4:02 The Ottomans just walk in and take the town of Karansebes without a fight.4:08 So the Austrians did all the work for them.4:11 They did.4:12 And while some historians rightly point out that the story might have been embellished over the years, the core of it is true.4:21 A small dispute over alcohol, amplified by darkness and a language barrier, caused an entire army to defeat itself.4:30 It’s a perfect, tragic example of how a system can break down.4:35 Fear and confusion just cascaded until the whole thing collapsed.4:40 It proves a very old point.4:42 Sometimes the most dangerous enemy is the one you bring with you.
