0:00 On this day in 3114 BCE, a clock started ticking.0:03 Yesterday, we talked about the Rickenbacker Frying Pan, an invention that gave us the sound of a new century.0:11 Today, we’re going back a little further.0:13 Oh, just about five thousand, one hundred and forty years further, to the very beginning of one of the most sophisticated time-keeping systems ever devised by humankind: the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar.0:28 Now, if that phrase gives you a little shiver of...0:31 let's say, 2012-era anxiety, you are NOT alone.0:35 But that’s what makes looking back so delicious.0:38 We get to see what they were actually doing.0:41 This wasn't a doomsday clock.0:43 It was a magnificent, cyclical, and deeply philosophical way of mapping eternity.0:49 Think of it less like a single timeline and more like a set of nested gears, like a cosmic watch.0:56 You have the 260-day sacred calendar, the 365-day civic calendar, and then these massive, sweeping cycles.1:03 The largest of these, the Great Cycle or B'ak'tun, lasts about 394 years.1:08 August eleventh, 3114 BCE, is simply the zero date, the starting point from which all these cycles begin to turn.1:16 When the calendar "ended" on December 21st, 2012, it wasn't the end of the world.1:22 It was the end of the 13th B'ak'tun.1:24 It was a turnover, like an odometer flipping from 9-9-9-9 to all zeroes.1:29 It was a moment for renewal, not apocalypse.1:32 And looking back now, it's a perfect lesson in how we project our own anxieties onto the past.1:39 The Maya weren't predicting the end.1:42 They were celebrating the continuity of time itself.1:45 They built a system so vast it could chart dates millions of years into the past and the future.1:52 They weren't afraid of time.1:54 They were obsessed with it.1:56 And on this day, over five millennia ago, their grand experiment began.2:01 From mapping time to conquering space.2:03 Let's jump forward a few thousand years to August eleventh, 1962.2:08 The Cold War is at its absolute peak.2:10 The Space Race isn't just about science; it's about ideology, it's about survival, it's about proving which system will define the future of humanity.2:21 And on this day, the Soviet Union does something absolutely audacious.2:26 They launch Vostok 3, with cosmonaut Andriyan Nikolayev tucked inside.2:31 Now, another space launch might not sound groundbreaking.2:35 But here's the turn.2:36 This wasn't just about getting a man into orbit.2:40 The Soviets were playing a different game.2:42 While the world watched Vostok 3 circle the Earth, the real plan was already in motion.2:49 The very next day, they launched Vostok 4.2:52 The two capsules, these tiny metal spheres hurtling through the void at thousands of miles per hour, were on a rendezvous mission.3:01 They came within three miles of each other.3:04 For the first time in history, two manned spacecraft were in orbit at the same time, their pilots able to see each other, to communicate.3:13 From our vantage point, we can see the separate Mercury and Gemini programs.3:19 But in that moment, in August 1962, it looked like the Soviets were light-years ahead.3:25 They had the first satellite, the first man in space, and now, the first group flight.3:31 It was a stunning display of technical prowess, a cosmic ballet designed to tell the West, "We are here, and we are winning." It was a moment of incredible tension and, you have to admit, absolutely breathtaking nerve.3:46 And then, a different kind of celestial rendezvous.3:49 Let's go to August eleventh, 1999.3:52 The last total solar eclipse of the second millennium.3:56 Do you remember this?3:57 For a few minutes, across a wide swath of Europe and Asia, the moon slid perfectly over the face of the sun.4:05 Day became a deep, unsettling twilight.4:07 The birds went silent.4:09 The temperature dropped.4:11 And millions of people, wearing those little cardboard glasses, stopped everything they were doing and just...4:18 looked up.4:19 It felt like the universe was putting on a show to mark the end of an era.4:24 We were on the cusp of Y2K, the turn of the century, the dawn of a new millennium.4:30 There was this palpable feeling of transition in the air, a mix of excitement and anxiety.4:36 And the eclipse was the punctuation mark.4:39 It was a shared, global experience.4:41 Unlike the secret chess match of the Space Race, this was an open invitation.4:47 It wasn't about one nation's triumph.4:49 It was a reminder of our place in the cosmos.4:53 A reminder that for all our plans and all our calendars, we are on a rock, spinning around a star, in a universe that operates on a timescale that makes even the Long Count calendar look like a pocket watch.5:07 Okay, so we've charted time and we've reached for the stars.5:11 What about what we were building right here on Earth?5:15 August eleventh has a couple of absolute bangers on this front.5:19 First, let's go to 1981.5:21 On this day, IBM—International Business Machines, the sober, serious giant of corporate computing, the company of mainframes and men in white shirts—introduces...5:32 the IBM PC.5:33 Oh, this is one of those moments!5:35 Looking back, it's like watching someone strike the match that lights a bonfire.5:41 It wasn't the first personal computer.5:44 The Apple II, the Commodore PET, the TRS-80—they were already out there, beloved by hobbyists.5:50 But they were a bit like...5:52 well, like niche, craft-brewed hobbies.5:55 The IBM PC was different.5:57 Because it was IBM, it was seen as legitimate.6:00 It was a serious machine for serious business.6:03 But here is the detail that changed EVERYTHING.6:06 IBM made a fateful decision.6:08 They built it with an open architecture.6:11 They used parts from other companies, like an Intel processor.6:15 They used an operating system, MS-DOS, from a tiny little company called Microsoft.6:21 This meant that anyone could make clones of the IBM PC.6:25 Anyone could write software for it.6:28 And they did.6:29 In a flood.6:29 IBM thought they were just selling a computer; what they actually did was create an entire ecosystem.6:36 They accidentally set the standard that would dominate computing for decades.6:42 That beige box launched on August eleventh, 1981 wasn't just a product.6:47 It was the blueprint for the modern world.6:50 And then, just eleven years later, on August eleventh, 1992, another kind of blueprint is realized.6:57 In Bloomington, Minnesota, the Mall of America opens its doors.7:01 And it is...7:02 a monument.7:03 I mean, truly.7:04 It wasn't just a big mall.7:05 It was a destination.7:07 A statement.7:08 It had an entire amusement park—with roller coasters!—in the center.7:12 An aquarium.7:13 Hundreds and hundreds of stores.7:16 It was the cathedral of late 20th-century consumerism.7:19 At a time when the digital world of the IBM PC was just starting to connect us in intangible ways, the Mall of America was a temple to the tangible.7:30 To walking, and shopping, and eating, and experiencing things in a massive, shared, physical space.7:37 So on the same date, just a decade apart, August eleventh gives us these two incredible, opposing visions of the future.7:45 One, a decentralized network of information that would eventually dematerialize everything from music to maps.7:53 The other, a centralized palace of physical goods, the absolute peak of the brick-and-mortar dream.8:00 And we have been living in the tension between those two worlds ever since.8:05 Of course, history isn't just made of machines and calendars.8:09 It's made of people.8:11 And August eleventh has given us some icons.8:14 On this day in 1929, the one and only Babe Ruth steps up to the plate and becomes the very first baseball player in history to join the 500 home run club.8:24 Can you imagine the sound of that?8:27 The crack of the bat, the roar of a crowd that knows it's seeing something that has never, ever been done before.8:35 It's pure legend.8:36 And speaking of legends, this is the birthday of both Chris Hemsworth, our cinematic god of thunder, Thor...8:43 and Hulk Hogan, the wrestling icon who told every kid in the eighties to say their prayers and eat their vitamins.8:51 There's something delightful about Thor and the Hulkster sharing a birthday.8:57 A day for larger-than-life heroes, it seems.9:00 But the past isn't always heroic.9:02 And it's never simple.9:04 On August eleventh, 1965, in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, a traffic stop escalated.9:10 It sparked six days of unrest that we now call the Watts Riots.9:15 When it was over, thirty-four people were dead.9:18 More than three thousand had been arrested.9:21 And the property damage was estimated at forty million dollars.9:25 This is the part of history that doesn't feel delightful.9:29 It feels urgent.9:30 It feels heavy.9:31 Because the story of Watts in 1965 is a story about poverty, and racial injustice, and a breakdown of trust between a community and its police.9:41 It's a story that feels achingly familiar.9:44 Looking back, we can see it wasn't an isolated incident.9:48 It was a flashpoint in a long, ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality.9:54 To remember this day is not just to list the numbers.9:57 It's to understand the roots of issues we are still grappling with.10:02 It's to recognize that the past is never past.10:05 It's a living, breathing part of our present.10:09 So you have it all there, on one single day.10:12 A day that marks the beginning of a 5,000-year calendar and the end-of-millennium eclipse.10:18 The day we reached for other planets and built a palace for shopping.10:23 The day a sports hero made history, and the day a city's long-simmering pain boiled over.10:29 It’s all tangled together.10:31 The gift of hindsight isn't about judging the past.10:34 It’s about seeing the patterns.10:36 It's about recognizing that the choices made on some long-ago August eleventh—to build a computer with an open architecture, to fund a statue's pedestal, to launch a second spaceship—created the world we are standing in right now.10:53 August eleventh isn't just a date on the calendar; it’s a blueprint of what we choose to build, what we choose to watch, and what we are forced to remember.
