0:00 On July fifth, 1946, a French engineer named Louis Réard introduced a new piece of swimwear he called the bikini.0:08 Just yesterday, we were talking about the strange, almost fated echoes of American independence on July Fourth, the uncanny coincidences that tie presidents and battles together.0:21 Well, it turns out July fifth has its own kind of magic.0:25 It’s a day of quiet, almost accidental, revolutions.0:28 A day where three seemingly unrelated events happened decades apart, but each one fundamentally changed a piece of our world—how we travel, how we see our bodies, and even how we define life itself.0:43 And it all starts with that tiny bathing suit, named after the site of an atomic bomb test because Réard believed its impact would be just as explosive.0:54 He wasn't wrong.0:55 But the bikini is only the beginning of what makes this day so remarkable.1:00 Because on this same day, exactly fifty years later in 1996, the world quietly met a sheep in Scotland.1:08 Her name was Dolly.1:09 She was the first mammal ever cloned from an adult cell, a scientific bombshell that landed with a gentle bleat and sent shockwaves through ethics and biology that we are still navigating today.1:23 A true turning point.1:25 And if you go back even further, to July fifth, 1841, you find something that looks...1:31 well, almost quaint.1:33 A man named Thomas Cook, a cabinet-maker and a devout Baptist, organized a train trip.1:39 It was a twelve-mile journey from Leicester to Loughborough for a temperance rally.1:45 He got about four hundred and eighty-five people to pay one shilling each for a round-trip ticket in an open-air carriage.1:54 It doesn't sound like much, does it?1:56 But that one-shilling ticket...1:59 that was the big bang of the modern world of travel.2:02 It was the birth of the package tour, the ancestor of every all-inclusive resort, every cruise, every single trip you've ever booked online.2:13 Three events on one day.2:14 A swimsuit, a sheep, and a train ride.2:17 And together, they tell a story about where our world came from.2:22 So let's start with that train.2:24 Thomas Cook didn't set out to invent tourism.2:27 He was trying to save souls.2:29 He was a passionate member of the Temperance Society, and he saw the newfangled railway system not as a tool for commerce, but as a tool for social good.2:40 He had this flash of inspiration.2:43 He later wrote, "A thought flashed through my brain – what a glorious thing it would be if the newly developed powers of railways and locomotion could be made subservient to the promotion of temperance.” So he went to the secretary of the Midland Counties Railway and proposed his idea: charter a train for his fellow temperance advocates.3:07 The concept of chartering a train for a large group, for a single purpose, at a pre-negotiated, all-inclusive price...3:16 was completely new.3:17 The railway agreed.3:19 Cook printed tickets, advertised the trip, and on July fifth, 1841, it happened.3:25 And here's the turn.3:26 It was a massive success.3:28 Not just for the temperance rally, but for the experience itself.3:33 People loved it.3:34 They loved the ease of it.3:36 Someone else had handled the logistics.3:38 The price was set.3:40 All they had to do was show up.3:42 Cook immediately saw the potential.3:44 That first trip, he said, was the "progenitor of a movement that will, one day, cover the world." And oh, was he right.3:53 What started as a one-off trip to a temperance meeting became his life's work.3:59 He spent the next few summers organizing more trips.4:03 Then he went bigger.4:04 By the 1860s, he was taking groups to Switzerland and Italy.4:08 He invented the "circular ticket," allowing travelers to hop on and off trains along a planned route.4:16 He created hotel vouchers, pre-paying for rooms so his travelers wouldn't have to worry.4:22 He published guidebooks.4:24 He was creating a system.4:26 He was taking the chaos and uncertainty of travel and turning it into a predictable, repeatable, and—most importantly—accessible product.4:36 By 1872, he was leading the first-ever round-the-world tour.4:40 Now, looking back, we can see the direct line from that one-shilling ticket in 1841 to the twenty-first-century global travel industry.4:50 He professionalized it.4:51 He democratized it.4:53 He made it possible for the rising middle class to see the world in a way that had previously been reserved only for the ultra-wealthy on their Grand Tours.5:04 Of course, there's a little footnote here.5:07 Some historians will point out that the very first railway excursion was actually two years earlier, in 1839, as a fundraiser for a church.5:17 And they're right.5:19 But Cook was the one who saw the system.5:22 He was the one who scaled it from a local fundraiser into a global enterprise.5:27 He didn't just sell a train ride; he sold an experience.5:31 He sold peace of mind.5:33 And that is what changed everything.5:35 Then, one hundred and fifty-five years later, on that same day, another revolution was born.5:42 Not on a railway platform, but in a quiet laboratory at the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh.5:49 Dolly the sheep.5:50 And it’s easy to forget now, you know, how profound this was.5:54 We'd been cloning things for a while—frogs, simple organisms.5:59 But it was always from embryonic cells.6:02 The prevailing wisdom was that once a cell from an adult body had specialized—once it became a skin cell, or a liver cell, or in this case, a mammary gland cell—its fate was sealed.6:15 It couldn't be reset.6:16 It couldn't become a whole new creature.6:19 Dolly proved that was wrong.6:21 The scientists took a cell from the udder of a six-year-old Finn-Dorset ewe.6:27 They fused it with an egg cell that had had its own nucleus removed, and they gave it a little jolt of electricity to kickstart the process.6:37 Two hundred and seventy-six attempts failed.6:40 But one...6:41 one worked.6:42 That one embryo was implanted in a surrogate mother, and on July fifth, 1996, Dolly was born.6:48 Genetically identical to the sheep whose mammary cell had started it all.6:54 It was a moment that felt like science fiction made real.6:58 It proved that an adult, specialized cell could be reprogrammed, could be wound back to its pluripotent state and create a new life.7:07 And this opened a Pandora's box of possibilities and fears.7:12 The potential for therapeutic cloning, for growing replacement organs...7:17 but also the specter of human cloning.7:20 The debate exploded overnight, and it’s a conversation we are still having.7:25 Dolly lived for six and a half years, but her legacy is the entire field of regenerative medicine.7:32 She is the scientific ancestor of every breakthrough in stem cell research that has happened since.7:40 She wasn't just a sheep; she was a proof of concept that changed our understanding of biology itself.7:47 And finally, we circle back to that bikini.7:50 Paris, 1946.7:51 The world is just emerging from the shadow of the Second World War.7:56 There's this craving for freedom, for life, for liberation.8:00 And into this moment steps Louis Réard.8:03 He creates a two-piece bathing suit, but it's far more daring than anything seen before.8:09 It was so small, he famously claimed it could be pulled through a wedding ring.8:15 It was so scandalous that no professional fashion model would wear it.8:20 He had to hire a nineteen-year-old nude dancer from the Casino de Paris named Micheline Bernardini to debut it at a popular Parisian swimming pool.8:31 And the name...8:32 that was a stroke of marketing genius.8:35 Just four days before his unveiling, the United States had conducted its first peacetime nuclear weapons test at a place called the Bikini Atoll.8:45 The news was everywhere.8:47 Réard co-opted the name, hoping his creation would be just as explosive.8:52 And it was.8:53 The Vatican declared it sinful.8:55 It was banned in Spain, Italy, and Portugal.8:58 But the genie was out of the bottle.9:01 For a generation of women, it became a symbol.9:04 A symbol of rebellion, of body confidence, of a new, more liberated era.9:09 It took decades to become mainstream, but that moment on July fifth set the course.9:16 So here we are.9:17 A train ride born from a desire for sobriety.9:20 A sheep born from a desire to understand life.9:23 A swimsuit born from a desire for liberation.9:26 Three different centuries, three different motivations.9:30 But looking back, we can see the pattern.9:33 We can see how a single day can hold the seeds of revolutions that take decades to fully bloom.9:40 The world we live in now—a world of effortless travel, of regenerative medicine, of modern beach culture—was quietly being sketched out on these disparate July fifths.9:52 History is rarely a single, loud declaration.9:56 More often, it's a series of quiet flashes of inspiration, waiting for the world to catch up.
