0:00 On May twenty-ninth, 1953, two men stood on the highest point on Earth.0:05 For the first time in human history, the summit of Mount Everest, 29,032 feet above sea level, was no longer an abstract concept but a place where boots touched snow.0:19 It was the final answer to a question that had consumed the world’s best for decades.0:26 Just yesterday we spoke of Alan Turing, a man who broke the unbreakable code of the Enigma machine, and today we find ourselves with another kind of code being broken—the planet’s own physical limit, solved by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.0:47 At the time, it felt like an endpoint.0:50 The last great terrestrial prize of the old empires, claimed.0:55 Looking back, from even this short distance of a few decades, we can see that moment wasn't an endpoint at all.1:04 It was a beginning.1:06 The 1953 British Mount Everest expedition wasn't just an adventure.1:11 It was a national project.1:13 Britain, still shadowed by the Second World War, rationing still in effect, poured resources and hope into this climb.1:23 Its success was announced on the morning of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation.1:30 A perfect story.1:31 A new Queen, a new Elizabethan age, heralded by a triumph at the top of the world.1:38 It was a story about courage, endurance, and the quiet competence of the Commonwealth—a New Zealander and a Sherpa, planting the Union Jack.1:49 It felt like the closing of a book.1:52 The final chapter in the great age of exploration.1:56 The blank spaces on the map were filled.2:00 But that’s the view from 1953.2:02 From our vantage point, we know what that moment actually was.2:07 It wasn't the last act of the age of exploration.2:12 It was the first act of the age of adventure tourism.2:16 Before Hillary and Norgay, Everest was a mythical beast.2:21 After them, it became a product.2:23 It became a challenge to be bought, a list to be ticked.2:28 The gear got better, the routes became established, the logistics turned into a science.2:35 The path they forged with ice axes and raw will… is now, on a clear day in May, a queue.2:43 A line of people, clipped into a fixed rope, waiting their turn.2:48 What looked like a singular human achievement, a moment of profound isolation and effort, was in fact the creation of a new kind of crowd.2:59 The retrospective view isn't a judgment.3:03 It's just a recognition of what was really being born on that mountain.3:09 They didn't just conquer a peak.3:11 They opened a business.3:13 We thought we were watching the story of two men reaching a summit.3:19 We were actually watching the blueprint being drawn for the commercialization of the wild.3:26 But May twenty-ninth holds another threshold moment...3:31 a much older and much darker one.3:34 On this day in 1453, the city of Constantinople fell to the Ottoman army of Sultan Mehmed the Second.3:42 For a thousand years, it had been the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, the bastion of Christendom in the East.3:51 Its walls were legendary, believed to be impenetrable.3:56 And for a thousand years, they were.3:59 But on that Tuesday in May, after a 53-day siege, the super-cannon of the Ottomans breached those walls.4:08 The last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine the Eleventh, was last seen fighting and dying near the gate, casting off his purple imperial robes to die as a common soldier with his city.4:23 For the entire Christian world, this was the apocalypse.4:27 The great city, the Second Rome, was gone.4:31 The Hagia Sophia, the largest church in the world, became a mosque.4:36 Refugees from the city fled west, carrying with them the ancient Greek manuscripts and knowledge that had been preserved there for a millennium.4:48 It was, by every contemporary account, an ending.4:52 The end of an empire.4:54 The end of an era.4:56 The end of the world, for some.4:58 And yet… looking back, we see it differently.5:02 The fall of Constantinople was one of the most powerful accelerants of the modern world.5:09 Why?5:10 Because it slammed the door on the old ways.5:13 The traditional land routes to Asia, the Silk Road, were now controlled by a hostile power.5:21 Spices, silk, the riches of the East… they were suddenly cut off, or prohibitively expensive.5:29 Europe, which had been accustomed to looking East for its wealth, was forced, out of pure necessity, to look West.5:38 It needed a new way to get to India.5:41 It needed new maps.5:43 New ships.5:44 New ideas.5:44 Within forty years, a Genoese sailor named Christopher Columbus, obsessed with finding that westward route to Asia, would land in the Americas.5:56 Vasco da Gama would round Africa.5:59 The Age of Discovery wasn't just a matter of curiosity.6:04 It was a direct, panicked response to the economic catastrophe that the fall of Constantinople represented.6:13 So what looked like the end of the world in 1453… was actually the catalyst for the creation of the world we now inhabit.6:23 It was a traumatic, violent, world-shattering beginning, disguised as an end.6:29 The people at the time could only see what was lost.6:33 We, from the future, can see what was, unintentionally, found.6:38 The day is littered with these beginnings disguised as something else.6:44 On May twenty-ninth, 1917, John F.6:47 Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts.6:51 A birthday.6:52 A private family event.6:54 But in retrospect, it's the start of a thread that leads to the "New Frontier," to the challenge to put a man on the Moon—another kind of Everest, another kind of summit that redefined national ambition.7:11 The birth of one man becomes the birth of a generational mission to conquer a different kind of altitude.7:19 Or go back just four years before that.7:23 May twenty-ninth, 1913.7:25 The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris.7:28 The premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet, The Rite of Spring.7:33 The audience was not pleased.7:35 The jarring, pulsing, dissonant music and the convulsive, "primitive" choreography were an assault on the senses.7:45 It started with murmurs, then shouting, then objects being thrown.7:50 A full-blown riot erupted between those who were horrified and the small minority who were electrified.7:59 By all contemporary measures, the premiere was a disaster.8:04 A failure.8:04 An avant-garde experiment gone horribly wrong.8:08 But looking back… we know that riot was the sound of the twentieth century being born.8:15 The audience wasn't just hearing a new piece of music.8:20 They were hearing the death of romanticism.8:24 They were hearing the machine age, the coming chaos of world war, the shattering of old certainties, all rendered in sound.8:34 What looked like a failed performance was actually the moment modern music announced its arrival.8:42 The audience heard the future, and they tried to fight it.8:47 So we have a summit… a fall… a birth… and a riot.8:51 All on the same calendar day, separated by centuries.8:55 Each one a moment of profound importance, and each one profoundly misunderstood by the people living through it.9:05 This is the pattern that history shows us, again and again.9:09 We are brilliant at marking the end of things.9:13 We are almost blind to the beginnings we are creating in the very same act.9:19 The pattern on May twenty-ninth isn't about success or failure.9:25 It's about how we mistake endings for beginnings, and summits for starting points.9:32 Hillary and Tenzing thought they were finishing the great quest of exploration.9:38 They were actually starting the business of adventure.9:43 The defenders of Constantinople thought they were witnessing the end of their world.9:50 They were, but they were also, inadvertently, forcing the creation of a new one.9:56 The rioting audience in Paris thought they were shouting down a terrible piece of music.10:04 They were actually providing the soundtrack for the birth of modernism.10:10 And that is the value of a day like today.10:13 It teaches us how to see our own time.10:16 We are also living through moments that feel like endings.10:21 Institutions are crumbling.10:23 Old certainties are dissolving.10:26 We are also celebrating things that feel like summits—technological breakthroughs, record-breaking profits, new frontiers crossed.10:37 But the lesson of May twenty-ninth is to ask a different question.10:42 What if the thing we are mourning as an end is actually the painful, necessary catalyst for a beginning we can’t yet see?10:52 What if the summit we are celebrating is not the peak of achievement, but just the entrance to a long, crowded, and complicated path we haven't yet accounted for?11:06 History’s value is always in the present tense.11:10 It's a lens for looking at our own world.11:13 We stand at our own walls, watching them crumble.11:17 We stand on our own summits, planting our own flags.11:21 The question is, can we see what is actually beginning?11:26 The map of the future isn't drawn by the peaks we conquer, but by the new worlds we are forced to find when the old ones fall.
