0:00 Every time we turn a calendar page to November second, we reckon we are looking at ordinary autumn days, yet nearly every single milestone struck on this date was built by folks who had no notion what avalanche they were starting.0:16 Yesterday we were standing amid the rubble of that seventeen fifty-five Lisbon earthquake, watching the world rethink cathedrals and bedrock from scratch.0:27 Today, sitting out here watching the creek wind down past the willow bottom, the question is the reverse: what happens when people think they are merely trying a modest experiment, and end up rearranging how human beings talk, vote, and fly?0:45 Back on November second, nineteen twenty, in a makeshift wooden shack perched atop the Westinghouse electric plant in East Pittsburgh, half a dozen men leaned over a microphone to broadcast the Harding-Cox presidential election returns on radio station KDKA.1:03 Those fellas figured a few hundred amateur radio operators with homemade crystal receivers in their attics might listen in between bursts of static.1:14 None of them could foresee that within five years, the airwaves would carry the pulse of entire continents, or that by nineteen thirty-six, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation would be chartered on this very calendar day to unite a country stretching across four thousand miles of wilderness.1:35 That same day in nineteen thirty-six, the British Broadcasting Corporation fired up the world's first high-definition television service from Alexandra Palace in London, transmitting tap dancers and acrobats to barely four hundred households.1:53 To the folks watching, it seemed like an expensive parlor trick.1:57 From where we sit now, you can draw a straight iron rail from that tin-roofed Pittsburgh shack and those London aerials straight to the glowing screens sitting in our pockets today.2:10 Now, I know how that sounds.2:12 But hang on.2:13 When you look at the decisions made on this day across two centuries, the people in the thick of them were doing what seemed utterly sensible with the tools they had in hand.2:26 Take November second, eighteen eighty-nine.2:29 President Benjamin Harrison sat down at his desk in Washington with a stack of papers to admit North Dakota and South Dakota into the Union as the thirty-ninth and fortieth states.2:42 The rivalry between the northern and southern halves of Dakota Territory was fiercer than two stray dogs over a pork chop.2:51 Neither one wanted the indignity of being named second.2:55 So old President Harrison had his secretary cover the documents with a piece of heavy parchment, leaving only the signature lines bare.3:05 He signed them, shuffled them like a deck of riverboat cards, and signed again.3:10 To this day, nobody on God's green earth knows which Dakota entered the United States first.3:17 It was a clever bureaucratic shuffle to prevent a political riot over depot flags and parade banners.3:24 What looked like harmless territory politics in eighteen eighty-nine locked four permanent senate seats into the American constitutional map, shifting the balance of national power for well over a century.3:39 Or take nineteen seventeen, when British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour signed a short, sixty-seven-word letter to Walter Rothschild.3:49 The Balfour Declaration was crafted in the clamor of the Great War, driven by wartime imperial calculation and cabinet debates over alliances.3:59 The British officials who signed off on that parchment thought they were managing short-term diplomatic momentum in the Middle East during the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.4:12 They had no earthly map for the decades of geopolitical wrestling, treaties, and heartbreak that would radiate outward from those sixty-seven words into our twenty-first-century headlines.4:25 And then you have Howard Hughes.4:28 On November second, nineteen forty-seven, out on the water at Long Beach, California, Hughes climbed into the cockpit of the H-Four Hercules.4:38 The press had spent years ridiculing him, calling that gargantuan wooden craft the Spruce Goose, even though it was built mostly of laminated birch.4:48 She had a wingspan of three hundred and twenty feet, wider than a football field.4:54 Critics in Congress said the thing was a white elephant that could never lift off the surface.5:01 Hughes took her out for taxi trials, opened the throttles on all eight radial engines, lifted her twenty-six feet above the Pacific swells, and flew her for a single mile.5:13 He never flew her again.5:15 To Hughes and the gathered crowd, that single mile was a complete vindication against the skeptics on Capitol Hill.5:24 Yet in hindsight, it marked the end of the giant wooden flying boat era, an astonishing evolutionary dead end built at the exact moment metal jet transports were preparing to inherit the skies.5:37 You see that same collision between expectation and reality in our living rooms.5:43 On this day in nineteen fifty-nine, a soft-spoken Columbia University instructor named Charles Van Doren stepped in front of a congressional committee and admitted that the quiz show Twenty-One had fed him answers in advance.6:00 The public was shattered.6:01 Sponsors and network bosses had treated the game as light entertainment, no different from carnival barkers sweetening the midway.6:11 They didn't understand that television had become a trusted hearth, and that trading integrity for Nielsen ratings would shatter public faith in American institutions for the next sixty years.6:25 What grips me about this date is how easily the switch could have been thrown the other way.6:31 In nineteen seventy-six, Jimmy Carter won the presidency against Gerald Ford on November second by just two percentage points in the popular vote.6:42 Had a few thousand ballots swung differently in Ohio or Hawaii, Ford could have stayed in the Oval Office, reshaping deregulation, southern politics, and foreign policy down to this morning.6:56 Or consider nineteen sixty-one in West Germany, when Konrad Adenauer's party hammered out a coalition deal with the Free Democrats on November second.7:06 The liberals had campaigned on the promise of dumping Adenauer, yet they caved and kept him in the chancellor's chair for two more years.7:16 That compromise tagged them with a reputation for flip-flopping that altered European party coalitions for decades.7:25 The thread could have snapped anywhere.7:27 Even out on a steel cable over Chicago on November second, twenty fourteen, when Nik Wallenda took two tightrope walks between skyscrapers without a harness or a net.7:39 The first walk climbed a nineteen-degree incline to six hundred and seventy-one feet; the second he did blindfolded across ninety-four feet.7:50 One gust off Lake Michigan, one mistimed step, and the headline becomes a national tragedy rather than a triumph of nerve.7:58 We look back and imagine these moments had to land where they did because they are already carved in the ledger.8:06 But history isn't a train bolted to a double track.8:10 It's a man walking a high wire in the dark, balancing on whatever scrap of wind happens to blow through the canyons.8:19 And that brings us right back to our own front porch in the present day.8:24 When we celebrate the birthdays of November second—folks like Queen Sofia of Greece, who turns eighty-eight today, or Canadian singer k.8:34 d.8:34 lang, turning sixty-five, or David Schwimmer, turning sixty, or the Australian Formula One champion Alan Jones, who hits eighty—we are marking people whose lives intersected with these shifting cultural tides.8:49 We are living right now inside consequences that nobody in the room intended.8:54 On this day in twenty twenty-two, Ethiopian authorities and the Tigray People's Liberation Front signed a ceasefire agreement that halted a devastating two-year war.9:06 That pen stroke might easily have crumbled under regional rivalry, just as those Dakota boundaries might have split differently or that radio broadcast from Pittsburgh might have vanished into the autumn air.9:21 Instead, human beings chose to hold the wire steady.9:25 Whenever we watch our leaders make declarations, launch media platforms, or redraw political maps, we tend to evaluate them only by what happens before sunset.9:37 But history's true value is always in the present tense, reminding us that our smallest administrative compromises and technical trials are fixing to ripple forward into lives we will never meet.9:51 The Dakota clerks thought they were shuffling paper; Hughes thought he was answering his critics; KDKA thought they were amusing a few tinkerers in Pittsburgh.10:02 We now know what they couldn't: every switch we throw today builds the track the future has to ride on.10:10 Well.10:10 That is about the size of it.10:12 Pull your sweater a little tighter against the evening damp, and I will see you tomorrow.
