0:00 On August ninth, 1942, Mahatma Gandhi was arrested.0:04 Yesterday, in our look at August eighth, we touched on the wild and varied history of that date, including Gandhi’s famous “Do or Die” speech.0:15 Less than twenty-four hours after he delivered that call to action, the British Raj responded.0:22 And in that response, in that arrest, they set something in motion they could never take back.0:30 Looking back from now, we can see the whole arc.0:34 We see the speech, the arrest, the independence that followed five years later.0:40 But in that moment, for the people on the ground, the story looked very different.0:47 It looked like a failure.0:49 The leadership of the Indian National Congress was rounded up, jailed.0:54 The Quit India Movement, which had just been launched with so much hope, was immediately decapitated.1:02 The British blamed the Congress for the chaos that followed — for acts of sabotage against railway lines and government buildings.1:13 And while Gandhi himself never, ever condoned violence, the movement he started had taken on a life of its own.1:21 He had urged Indians to “consider themselves free and act as free people.” And they did.1:29 In widespread, non-violent resistance, yes...1:32 but also in other ways.1:34 From the quiet of the future, we can see the flaw in the British calculation.1:40 They thought that by removing the leaders, they could stop the idea.1:46 But all they did was prove Gandhi’s point.1:49 They proved that the colonial system could only be maintained through force, and in doing so, they made its end an absolute certainty.2:00 There’s an argument, a credible one, that this crackdown had unintended consequences.2:06 With the Congress leaders in prison, the Muslim League, which supported the British war effort, gained political ground.2:16 This shift...2:17 this vacuum...2:18 it contributed to the eventual, painful partition of India.2:23 A straight line from a moment of defiance to a redrawing of the map.2:28 What looked like a strategic failure in August 1942 — the movement’s leaders all in jail — was actually the moment the moral argument was won so completely that the political outcome, however messy, was just a matter of time.2:46 The British thought they were putting out a fire.2:50 They were just throwing fuel on it.2:53 Three years to the day after Gandhi’s arrest, on August ninth, 1945, the world changed again.3:00 A second atomic bomb was dropped by the United States, this time on the city of Nagasaki.3:07 We often talk about Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the same breath, as if they were one single event.3:15 But the three days that separated them are...3:19 significant.3:20 Hiroshima, on August sixth, was the first.3:23 It was the introduction of a terrible new reality.3:27 But Nagasaki...3:28 Nagasaki was the confirmation.3:31 It was the proof that Hiroshima wasn’t a one-off.3:34 It wasn’t a singular, monstrous effort that could never be repeated.3:40 It was a new capability.3:42 A process.3:43 From our vantage point, we can see that the second bomb did something more than just hasten the end of the Second World War.3:53 It established the grammar of the entire Cold War that followed.3:58 It said: we can do this again.4:00 And again.4:01 The first bomb was a question.4:03 The second one was the answer.4:06 And that answer has shaped every geopolitical calculation for the eighty years since.4:12 When we look back at that decision, the thing that stands out isn't the horror, as profound as that is.4:21 It's the speed.4:22 The sheer velocity of events.4:24 A new technology, barely understood, deployed twice in seventy-two hours to force a surrender.4:32 It's a moment that reveals how quickly a new, terrifying assumption can become the basis for global policy.4:40 We now had two data points for what nuclear devastation looked like.4:46 And with that, the world’s understanding of power, and of endings, was permanently altered.4:53 It was no longer about winning a war on the battlefield.4:57 It was about having the ability to erase the battlefield entirely.5:03 There is another August ninth.5:05 One that is less known in the West, but whose echoes are just as loud, if not louder, for the people who live with its legacy.5:15 On August ninth, 1988, the Iranian regime began the systematic execution of political prisoners.5:23 Over the course of several weeks, more than thirty thousand people were killed.5:29 Thirty thousand.5:30 It’s a number so large it’s difficult to comprehend.5:34 It was an attempt to erase a generation of opposition.5:39 To silence dissent not just for a day, or a year, but forever.5:44 It was an act of absolute control.5:46 And it failed.5:48 This is the part that history often misses.5:51 We see an event like the 1988 massacre and we file it away as a "dark chapter." A terrible thing that happened, past tense.6:01 But looking back from where we are now, we can see that it wasn't an ending.6:07 It was a seed.6:08 The research from groups like the National Council of Resistance of Iran calls the victims “timeless sparks whose truth remains alive.” And we can see that truth playing out on the streets of Iran right now.6:25 The major uprisings in December of 2025, and again in January of 2026...6:30 they don't come from nowhere.6:33 They are fueled by this memory.6:35 They are led by a generation of young people who grew up with the stories of the martyrs of 1988.6:43 The regime tried to create a foundation of fear, and for a time, it worked.6:49 But the thing about foundations built on fear is that they are brittle.6:54 The regime’s response to the recent protests has been just as brutal.7:00 Mass arrests.7:01 Executions.7:02 The news updates from just last month, July 2026, talk about using the judicial system as a tool of political control, specifically targeting women protesters to instill fear.7:16 It’s the same playbook from 1988.7:18 But the result is different.7:21 Because the memory is still alive.7:23 What we are seeing is the long arc of defiance.7:27 The regime’s attempt to erase its opposition in 1988 didn’t work.7:32 It just created a story that gives courage to new generations.7:37 That August ninth massacre wasn't the end of the struggle.7:42 It was the event that ensured the struggle would never, ever end until the regime itself does.7:49 The past isn't just a memory; it's an active participant in the present.7:55 So you have these three moments, all on one day.7:59 August ninth.8:00 In India, an arrest that backfires and guarantees independence.8:05 In Japan, a bombing that redefines global power forever.8:10 And in Iran, a massacre that fails to kill an idea, and instead, makes it immortal.8:16 Each one is a story about control.8:19 About an authority trying to impose its will and end a problem.8:24 The British trying to end the Quit India movement.8:28 The Americans trying to end a war.8:31 The Iranian regime trying to end dissent.8:34 And in every case, the action they took created a future they could not control and did not expect.8:42 History’s value is always in the present tense.8:46 These events from 1942, 1945, and 1988 aren't just anniversaries we mark on a calendar.8:53 They are live wires.8:54 They are the source code for the world we are living in right now.8:59 The struggles for freedom, the fear of annihilation, the enduring power of resistance — they all have a date.9:08 And sometimes, they all have the same date.
