0:00 On August sixth, 1926, a nineteen-year-old from New York City named Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim the English Channel.0:10 And that incredible human-powered feat, that act of pure will against the elements, feels like a perfect echo of our conversation yesterday about the Sky Crane on Mars—two completely different kinds of impossible, made possible by sheer ingenuity and courage.0:31 It just goes to show, whether you're lowering a rover from a rocket-powered jetpack or just...0:38 swimming, there are so many ways to break boundaries.0:42 And oh, what a swim it was.0:45 This wasn't just about being the first woman.0:48 Before Gertrude, only five men had ever successfully made the crossing.0:54 The record stood at sixteen hours and thirty-three minutes.0:59 People said a woman wasn't physically capable of it.1:03 The cold, the tides, the sheer endurance required...1:07 it was considered a man's challenge.1:10 So what does Gertrude do?1:12 She dives into the water at Cape Gris-Nez in France, covered in grease to ward off the cold and the jellyfish stings, and she just...1:22 starts swimming.1:23 Her own trainer thought she'd fail.1:26 At one point, he leaned over the side of the support boat and called out, "Gertie, you must come out!" And she, floating in the choppy, freezing water, lifted her head and yelled back, "What for?" I just love that.1:43 That's the spirit.1:45 She swam through storms and shifting tides for fourteen hours and thirty-one minutes.1:51 She didn't just break the men's record; she absolutely SHATTERED it.1:57 By nearly two hours.1:58 When she arrived on the shore in Kent, she wasn't just a swimmer.2:04 She was a global icon.2:05 A symbol of what was possible.2:08 She proved, in the most undeniable way imaginable, that the limits people talked about were just that—talk.2:16 Just two years after Gertrude Ederle became one of the most famous women on the planet, another future icon was born on this very same day, August sixth, 1928.2:29 In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Slovakian immigrant parents, a boy named Andrew Warhola entered the world.2:37 We know him, of course, as Andy Warhol.2:40 And isn't that a delightful collision of worlds?2:44 The raw, physical, elemental achievement of Ederle, and then...2:49 the birth of the artist who would make his name by taking the physical world and turning it into a flat, reproducible, commercial image.3:00 A soup can.3:01 A photograph of Marilyn Monroe.3:03 A banana.3:04 Warhol saw the world Ederle was now a part of—the world of mass media, of celebrity, of images repeated so often they become part of the air we breathe.3:16 He once asked, "Isn't life a series of images that change as they repeat themselves?" And he spent his entire life exploring that question.3:27 He took things that were supposed to be low-brow, commercial, or just...3:33 ordinary, and he put them in a gallery.3:36 He forced the art world to ask itself what art even WAS.3:40 And by doing that, he held up a mirror to the entire culture.3:45 He saw the power of the repeated image, the way a celebrity's face or a brand's logo could become more real than the thing itself.3:56 It's a world we are all living in now, a world he helped to create, or at least, was the first to truly document.4:05 And to make the day even richer for an art historian...4:09 on this same day, August sixth, way back in 1660, the great Spanish Baroque painter Diego Velázquez died.4:17 So you have the end of this master of realism and psychological depth, a painter who influenced centuries of art...4:26 and on the very same calendar date, years later, you have the birth of the man who would question the very idea of realism and depth in art.4:37 It’s like the day itself contains a whole conversation about what art is for.4:44 It's just perfect.4:45 But August sixth holds more than just these acts of creation and physical triumph.4:52 It holds their opposite, too.4:54 And this is the turn that is so hard to reconcile, the part that shows how a single day can contain the absolute best and the absolute worst of what humanity is capable of.5:07 On August sixth, 1945, seventeen years after Andy Warhol was born, the world changed forever.5:15 At eight-fifteen in the morning, a B-29 bomber named the Enola Gay flew over the Japanese city of Hiroshima and released a single bomb, codenamed "Little Boy." Forty-three seconds later, it detonated.5:31 In a flash, it unleashed a power the world had never seen.5:35 The energy equivalent of fifteen thousand tons of TNT.5:40 It created a fireball that was hundreds of thousands of degrees at its core.5:46 It flattened nearly five square miles of the city.5:50 By the end of that year, an estimated one hundred and forty thousand people were dead.5:56 From the initial blast, from the fires, from the radiation that poisoned everything it touched.6:04 There's no delight here.6:06 There is only awe, in the most terrible sense of the word.6:11 It was a turning point.6:12 An end to one war, and the beginning of a new kind of fear that would hang over the entire globe for the rest of the century and beyond.6:23 The nuclear age had begun.6:25 And here is the thing that just stops me in my tracks.6:30 Andy Warhol, the artist obsessed with images that repeat themselves, was born on the same day that, years later, would produce the most terrifying, world-changing, endlessly repeated image of the twentieth century: the mushroom cloud.6:48 That single image, captured in photographs and film, would be burned into the global consciousness.6:56 It changed warfare.6:57 It changed politics.6:59 It changed our understanding of our own power for self-destruction.7:04 Warhol asked if life was a series of images that change as they repeat.7:10 The image from Hiroshima on August sixth, 1945, changed everything.7:15 The day holds the birth of the artist who documented the surface of modern life, and the day the depths of modern destruction were revealed to all.7:27 It's an impossible contrast.7:29 And yet, there it is.7:31 On the calendar.7:32 Side by side.7:33 So where do you go from there?7:36 After a moment that reveals such a capacity for annihilation, what can humanity possibly do?7:43 Well, twenty years later to the day, on August sixth, 1965, we get one answer.7:49 In the Rotunda of the U.S.7:51 Capitol, President Lyndon B.7:53 Johnson sat at a table and signed the Voting Rights Act into law.7:59 He did it in the very room where President Lincoln had worked a century earlier.8:05 And this act was a landmark piece of legislation.8:09 It was designed to tear down the legal barriers, the poll taxes and literacy tests, that had been systematically used to prevent African Americans from exercising their right to vote.8:23 It was an act of construction.8:26 An attempt to perfect the union, to live up to the nation's founding ideals.8:32 It was a recognition that true power doesn't come from a bomb.8:37 It comes from the people.8:39 From their voices, their choices, their votes.8:42 Now, we know that wasn't the end of the story.8:46 The act has been challenged and weakened over the years.8:50 The fight for justice is never truly finished.8:54 But on that August sixth, it was a monumental step forward.8:59 A profound statement about what a country could and should be.9:04 On the same day that holds the memory of Hiroshima, we also have this powerful act of building a more just society.9:13 On the same day that the Soviet Union annexed Estonia in 1940, ending its independence, we have this powerful act of expanding freedom.9:24 So when we look back from ten years from now, what will we say this moment—this day, August sixth—actually was?9:32 It’s not one thing.9:34 It's a collision.9:35 It's Gertrude Ederle, proving the strength of the human body.9:40 It's Andy Warhol, capturing the soul of the modern image.9:45 It's the horror of Hiroshima, showing the terrifying power of human intellect.9:51 And it's the hope of the Voting Rights Act, asserting the enduring power of human dignity.9:58 History doesn't give us simple days; it gives us a mirror, reflecting every facet of ourselves, all at once.
