0:00 On August 2nd, 1776, fifty-six men began to sign the Declaration of Independence.0:06 Not July fourth.0:07 August second.0:09 Yesterday, in our journey through time, we touched on history as a living story, and oh, does today ever prove that point.0:19 We think of the fourth of July as THE day, the one with the fireworks and the signatures and the big, bold John Hancock.0:28 And that’s… partly true.0:30 The text was approved on July fourth.0:33 But the document we all picture, that beautiful, flowing script on parchment?0:40 That wasn't ready.0:41 That version, the official, engrossed copy, showed up in Congress nearly a month later.0:48 And on August second, the delegates, one by one, began the terrifying and exhilarating act of putting their names to paper.0:58 This wasn't a celebration.1:00 This was a death warrant if they failed.1:04 They signed by state, from North to South, starting with Josiah Bartlett of New Hampshire.1:11 Some men who had voted 'yes' on the fourth were gone, and some new delegates who hadn't been there for the vote signed it for the first time on August second.1:24 It wasn't a single moment of defiant unity.1:27 It was a process.1:29 A slow, deliberate, terrifying commitment.1:32 Looking back now, we see a single, glorious event.1:36 But for them, it was a series of individual choices, each one a step into an unknown future.1:44 That quiet room in Philadelphia, on August second, is where the idea of America was formally put on the line.1:53 But a date is never just one story.1:55 It’s a tapestry, and the threads can be wildly, astonishingly different.2:01 Fast forward to August second, 1924.2:04 In Harlem, New York City, a child is born who will spend his entire life examining the promises made in that 1776 document and demanding that his country live up to them.2:18 James Baldwin.2:19 What a voice.2:20 Born into a world that was in so many ways the absolute antithesis of the Declaration's promise of equality, he forged a language of fire and grace to talk about race, and sex, and class in America.2:36 His novels, like Go Tell It on the Mountain, his plays, his essays… they weren't just literature.2:44 They were a reckoning.2:46 He held up a mirror and refused to let anyone look away.2:51 There's something so… historically perfect about the fact that the man who would become one of America's most powerful consciences shares a day with the formal signing of its founding creed.3:06 It's as if the date itself contains both the promise and the demand for that promise to be fulfilled.3:14 And then, just a few years later, on this same day in 1932, the world gets another kind of voice entirely.3:23 A completely different kind of legend.3:26 Peter O’Toole is born.3:28 Oh, Peter O'Toole.3:29 Those eyes.3:30 That voice that could go from a whisper to a roar.3:34 The man who WAS Lawrence of Arabia.3:37 He was one of those glorious, larger-than-life figures, a hellraiser spoken of in the same breath as Richard Harris and Richard Burton.3:48 He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor EIGHT times and never won.3:55 A record!3:55 But it doesn't matter, does it?3:58 He didn't need the statue.4:00 He had the screen.4:02 He embodied a kind of wild, romantic, almost reckless artistry.4:07 When he died, his memorial plaque was inscribed with a simple, perfect line: “Good night and joy be with you all.” From the searing moral clarity of Baldwin to the swashbuckling charisma of O'Toole… August second was clearly a day for unforgettable voices.4:28 The day also marks the silencing of a great voice.4:32 On August second, 1922, Alexander Graham Bell died.4:36 The man who literally invented the means for us to project our voices across continents and oceans… fell silent.4:45 His work fundamentally reshaped the human experience.4:49 It collapsed distance.4:51 It allowed for a new kind of connection, a new speed of information.4:57 It’s because of the world he helped build that we can even have this conversation, that we can look back at history with this kind of instant access.5:09 His death marks the end of a particular era of invention, the passing of a titan who laid the groundwork for the global nervous system we all now live within.5:22 But history's tapestry has dark threads, too.5:25 And they are just as crucial to see, to understand.5:29 Because on August second, 1934, something truly chilling happens in Germany.5:36 President Hindenburg dies.5:38 And Adolf Hitler, who is already Chancellor, doesn't call for a new election.5:44 No.5:44 He simply… merges the two offices.5:47 He declares himself Führer and Reich Chancellor, consolidating absolute power.5:53 He becomes commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and every soldier is made to swear an oath of personal loyalty not to the country, not to a constitution, but to HIM.6:07 It’s a procedural move.6:09 A bureaucratic sleight of hand.6:11 And it is the final nail in the coffin of the Weimar Republic.6:17 Think about that.6:18 The very same calendar date.6:20 In 1776, a group of men sign a document pledging their lives to the idea that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.6:32 And in 1934, one man erases that idea with a decree, making the state and himself one and the same.6:40 It is a stunning, horrifying counterpoint.6:44 It shows us that the ideals written on parchment are only as strong as the people who defend them, and that the institutions of freedom can be dismantled, piece by piece, from the inside.6:59 Looking back, we see August second, 1934, as a point of no return.7:04 A door slamming shut on one possible future, and opening onto a decade of unimaginable horror.7:12 So when we look at this single day, August second, what do we actually see?7:18 We see the myth of our beginnings, and the messier, braver reality.7:24 July fourth is the idea.7:26 August second is the follow-through.7:29 It’s the day the bill comes due.7:31 And here’s that other little fact that makes it even more real: some delegates didn't even sign on August second.7:40 They were away, on other duties.7:43 They trickled in over the following weeks, adding their names to the list of traitors.7:50 The last signature wasn't added until months later.7:54 It wasn't one day.7:56 It was a season of courage.7:58 And into the world defined by that season, you have the birth of James Baldwin, a voice of profound moral courage, challenging the nation to live up to its own founding words.8:12 You have the birth of Peter O'Toole, a voice of artistic courage, of sheer, unapologetic life-force.8:20 You have the death of Alexander Graham Bell, the man who gave all our voices a new kind of reach.8:28 And you have the rise of Hitler, the ultimate symbol of a world where individual voices are extinguished by the roar of the state.8:39 It’s all there.8:40 On one day.8:41 Creation and destruction.8:43 The promise of liberty and the chilling mechanics of tyranny.8:48 The birth of a story and the birth of the person who will one day force us to read the fine print.8:56 This is what makes looking at the past so… alive.9:00 It’s not a neat and tidy timeline.9:03 It’s a collision.9:04 A beautiful, terrible, glorious collision of human choices.9:09 Looking back from ten years from now, what will we say this moment of our own actually was?9:16 We'll say it was just like August second.9:20 A day filled with contradictions we couldn't yet see, a day where new declarations were being signed in silence, and new voices were being born who would one day call us to account.9:34 History isn't something that happened back then.9:38 It is the room we are sitting in right now.9:42 The ink is never dry.
