0:00 On August tenth, 1937, a man named George D.0:03 Beauchamp was awarded a patent for an instrument officially called the Rickenbacker Frying Pan.0:10 And with that, the world got ready to rock and roll.0:14 Just yesterday, we were talking about August ninth, and how a single event, like Gandhi’s arrest in 1942, could become a pivot point for an entire nation.0:25 Well, today is also a day of revolutions, but some of them are a little louder.0:31 The Frying Pan, this strange-looking lap steel guitar, was the first commercially successful electric guitar.0:39 It’s patent number 2,089,171.0:42 And that patent isn't just a piece of paper in an archive...0:46 it is the birth certificate for a sound that would define the next century.0:52 Think about it.0:53 Before this, a guitar was a lovely, intimate, acoustic instrument.0:58 It could fill a room, sure.1:00 But it couldn't fight a horn section.1:02 It couldn't scream over a drummer.1:05 It couldn't fill a stadium.1:07 George Beauchamp and the Electro String Corporation changed all that.1:12 They figured out how to use electromagnetic pickups to turn the vibration of a string into an electrical signal, which you could then amplify into...1:23 well, anything.1:24 Into the cool, clean lines of jazz.1:27 Into the raw, aching heart of the blues.1:30 Into the twang of country music.1:32 And eventually, into the absolute, world-shaking power of rock and roll.1:38 Every guitar solo you have ever loved, every power chord that has ever made you want to jump up and down...1:46 owes a little something to a patent filed for a thing that looked like a piece of cookware.1:53 It’s just...1:54 it’s perfect.1:55 It’s history you can HEAR.1:56 And that’s what’s so brilliant about looking at a single day.2:01 You see these threads being woven, these futures being built, piece by piece.2:07 Sometimes it’s a patent for a guitar.2:10 And sometimes, it’s the map of Europe.2:12 Let's go back.2:13 Waaay back.2:14 To August tenth, 843.2:16 The Treaty of Verdun.2:17 Now, I know, I know.2:19 A medieval treaty sounds...2:21 dusty.2:21 But stick with me.2:23 This is spectacular.2:24 You have the three grandsons of the great emperor Charlemagne.2:29 Lothair the First, Louis the German, and Charles the Bald.2:33 And they have been fighting a brutal civil war over who gets what from grandpa’s massive Carolingian Empire.2:41 On this day, they finally sign a piece of paper that stops the fighting.2:47 And in doing so, they carve up the empire.2:50 They draw lines on a map.2:52 And here's the part that gives me chills.2:55 The western part, given to Charles the Bald, becomes the foundation of France.3:01 The eastern part, given to Louis the German, becomes the foundation of Germany.3:06 The bit in the middle...3:08 well, that becomes a contested zone for the next thousand years.3:13 But on this day, August tenth, 843, these three brothers, probably just trying to stop killing each other and secure their own power, accidentally drew the first rough draft of modern Western Europe.3:28 They had no idea.3:29 They couldn't possibly have known that their family squabble would set the stage for languages, cultures, and nations that would last for centuries.3:40 They were just trying to solve a problem in 843.3:44 But we, from our vantage point, can see the astonishing, world-shaping consequences.3:50 We see the birth of France and Germany in the ink of that treaty.3:55 So you have the creation of a sound.3:58 The creation of nations.3:59 But August tenth also knows about endings.4:03 Deep, final, world-shattering endings.4:05 For that, we have to go back even further.4:09 To the year 612 BC.4:10 Around this day, the city of Nineveh fell.4:13 And this wasn't just any city.4:15 Nineveh was the capital of the Neo-Assyrian Empire.4:19 It was, for a time, the largest city in the world.4:23 A place of staggering wealth, military might, and culture.4:27 The Assyrians were the superpower of their day, a brutal, efficient empire that had dominated the Near East for centuries.4:36 And Nineveh was their crown jewel.4:39 And on August tenth, 612 BC, after a long siege by a coalition of their enemies—the Babylonians and the Medes—the city was breached.4:49 It was sacked.4:50 It was burned.4:51 The great libraries, the magnificent palaces, all of it, destroyed.4:56 King Sinsharishkun died in the flames.4:59 And it wasn't just the fall of a city.5:02 It was the end of an empire.5:04 The end of a world.5:05 The Neo-Assyrian empire was so utterly annihilated that it vanished from history, becoming little more than a legend mentioned in the Bible, until archaeologists began uncovering its ruins in the nineteenth century.5:21 Think about that contrast.5:23 On the very same day, centuries apart, you have the patent for an electric guitar—an act of pure creation that will echo into a future no one can imagine.5:35 You have the Treaty of Verdun, an act of division that accidentally creates the future.5:41 And you have the fall of Nineveh, an act of total destruction that erases a past.5:47 It’s all there.5:48 The entire human cycle.5:50 Building things up, and tearing them down.5:53 And you see this pattern play out again and again on this one day.5:58 August tenth, 1793.6:00 The Louvre palace in Paris, once the private home of kings, is opened to the public as a museum.6:07 An act of revolution, taking the art of the powerful and giving it to the people.6:13 An act of creation, building one of the world's greatest cultural institutions.6:19 August tenth, 1846.6:20 President James K.6:21 Polk signs an act creating the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., using money left by an English scientist who had never even BEEN to America.6:33 Another act of creation, a "people's university." But the day has its darkness, too.6:39 August tenth, 1969.6:40 The night after the horrific Tate murders, the Manson Family cult continues its spree, killing Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in their Los Angeles home.6:52 An act of pure, nihilistic destruction that, for many, signaled the dark end of the sixties dream.6:59 And then, August tenth, 1977.7:01 The serial killer David Berkowitz, the "Son of Sam," who had terrorized New York City for a year, is finally arrested.7:10 An ending, yes, but an ending to a nightmare.7:13 A restoration of order.7:15 Creation.7:16 Destruction.7:17 Order.7:17 Chaos.7:17 It’s all here.7:18 It’s all on the calendar.7:20 We even see it in the smaller stories.7:23 Today is the birthday of the wonderful Spanish actor Antonio Banderas.7:28 And it’s the day, in 1932, that the world said goodbye to Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepherd who became one of Hollywood’s first global superstars.7:39 A dog!7:40 Who appeared in twenty-seven films!7:42 You can’t make this stuff up.7:44 From the fall of an ancient empire to the death of a movie star dog.7:50 From the birth of modern Europe to the birth of rock and roll.7:54 It’s all connected.7:56 It’s all part of the same sprawling, messy, beautiful, and sometimes terrifying story.8:02 Looking back from today, from ten years in the future, what will we say this moment actually was?8:09 We look at August tenth and see these clear lines—the patent, the treaty, the fall of the city.8:16 We see them because time has given us the perspective to understand their importance.8:23 We know the electric guitar changed music because we've heard it.8:28 We know Verdun shaped Europe because we can see it on a map.8:32 But the people living on those days didn't know.8:36 They couldn't.8:37 They were just...8:38 living.8:39 Signing a treaty.8:40 Filing a patent.8:41 Huddling behind city walls.8:43 They had no idea their actions would echo for a thousand years.8:48 And that is the great, humbling lesson of history.8:51 We are living in days that future historians will look back on as foundational.8:57 As the moment a new sound was born, or an old empire finally crumbled.9:03 We are drawing the maps of the future right now, with our choices, our creations, and our destructions.9:10 We just don't have the perspective to see the lines yet.
