0:00 On April eighth, 1864, the United States Senate voted thirty-eight to six.0:05 This wasn't a vote on taxes or a judicial appointment.0:09 This was the vote to pass the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, the amendment that would abolish slavery.0:17 Now, it wouldn't be ratified by the states until December of 1865, but this...0:23 this was the moment the gears of federal law began to turn, irreversibly, toward freedom.0:29 It was a promise taking legislative form.0:32 And looking back, we can see that so much of what happens on this particular day in history is about breaking old forms, sometimes violently, sometimes joyfully, to make way for something entirely new.0:47 It’s a day of remarkable discoveries and monumental agreements.0:51 On this day in 1820, on the Greek island of Milos, a peasant farmer named Yorgos Kentrotas was digging in some ancient ruins when his shovel hit stone.1:03 He'd found a statue.1:04 A French naval officer who happened to be nearby recognized its importance, and soon, the world would come to know it as the Venus de Milo.1:14 Even then, her arms were missing, but that mystery only added to her fame.1:20 She became an instant icon of classical beauty, a broken piece of the past that became more perfect in its imperfection.1:29 She now stands, of course, in the Louvre, seen by millions.1:33 Then you leap forward to 1904.1:35 For centuries, Britain and France had been...1:38 let's call them rivals.1:40 They fought wars, they competed for colonies, they defined themselves in opposition to one another.1:47 But on April 8th, 1904, they signed the Entente Cordiale.1:52 A "cordial understanding." It wasn't a military alliance, not yet.1:56 It was more like a grand colonial settlement.2:00 France agreed to recognize British control over Egypt; Britain, in turn, recognized French influence in Morocco.2:08 It was a diplomatic tidying-up that ended centuries of conflict and, more importantly, created a new power bloc against a rising Germany.2:18 It was the handshake that would set the stage for the alliances of the First World War.2:24 April eighth is also a day for remarkable people.2:28 Kofi Annan was born on this day in 1938, the future Secretary-General of the United Nations and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who guided the world through the turn of the millennium.2:41 And on the quirkier side of history, it's the birthday of King Christian the Ninth of Denmark, born in 1818.2:49 He was known as the "Father-in-law of Europe" because his children married into nearly every major royal family on the continent, from Britain and Russia to Greece and Hanover.3:02 Talk about diplomatic reach!3:04 And back in America, on April 8th, 1857, a group of Dutch immigrants in Western Michigan, led by a Reverend Koenraad van den Bosch, formally seceded from the Reformed Church in America.3:18 They founded the Christian Reformed Church, seeking what they saw as a purer form of Calvinist tradition.3:26 It was a small, principled split that grew into a major denomination, founding colleges and shaping communities across North America.3:35 But of all the records broken and barriers shattered on this day, one stands out.3:41 One that fifty-four thousand people saw with their own eyes in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1974.3:48 That was the day Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run.3:52 Let’s go back to that Entente Cordiale for a moment.3:55 From our vantage point, it's easy to see it as the first domino falling toward 1914 and the Great War.4:03 But at the time, it was seen as a triumph of peace!4:07 A moment of de-escalation.4:09 The newspapers in London and Paris celebrated it.4:12 Here were two old, bitter enemies finally sorting out their differences over places like Siam, and Newfoundland, and West Africa.4:22 It was a practical, almost boring agreement about fishing rights and spheres of influence.4:28 But here’s what was happening underneath.4:31 Germany was building a massive navy.4:34 It was asserting its power across Europe.4:37 The Entente Cordiale wasn't just about France and Britain becoming friendly; it was about them realizing they had a common problem.4:47 The agreement was a signal.4:49 It was the quiet drawing of a line in the sand.4:52 Without it, the "Triple Entente" that included Russia would never have formed.4:58 And without that alliance, the entire 20th century looks completely different.5:03 It’s a classic case of history hiding in plain sight.5:07 What looked like a resolution of old conflicts was actually the foundation for a new, much larger one.5:15 It was the end of one story, yes, but it was the explosive beginning of another.5:21 And then there’s Hank Aaron.5:23 To understand the weight of April 8th, 1974, you have to understand the record he was chasing.5:30 714 home runs.5:31 Held by Babe Ruth.5:32 The Babe wasn't just a baseball player; he was a foundational American myth.5:38 A larger-than-life white hero from the golden age of sports.5:42 And here came Henry Aaron.5:44 A quiet, dignified, immensely talented Black man from Mobile, Alabama.5:49 As he got closer to the record, the pressure became inhuman.5:54 It wasn't just the media attention.5:56 It was the hate.5:57 He received thousands of letters.6:00 Vicious, racist death threats against him and his family.6:04 People telling him a Black man had no right to break the Babe's record.6:09 The FBI was involved.6:11 He had to have a police escort everywhere he went.6:14 He couldn't even sit with his teammates; he had to have his own hotel room, for his own safety.6:21 So when he stepped up to the plate in the fourth inning at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, facing Dodgers pitcher Al Downing...6:31 he was carrying all of that.6:33 The count was one ball, no strikes.6:35 Downing threw a fastball.6:37 And Aaron swung.6:38 There was no doubt.6:40 The ball sailed over the left-field fence.6:43 The stadium erupted.6:44 For a moment, it wasn't about black or white.6:47 It was just about greatness.6:50 Two college students, both white, jumped onto the field and ran the bases with him, patting him on the back in pure, unadulterated joy.6:59 His mother ran out and hugged him.7:02 It was chaos.7:03 It was beautiful.7:04 It was a release.7:05 When we look back now, we don't just see a home run.7:09 We see a man staring down the absolute worst of America and beating it with nothing but his own skill and grace.7:17 He didn't just break a baseball record.7:20 He broke a cultural barrier.7:22 That single swing of the bat was a victory that echoed far beyond the stadium walls.7:29 It was a moment of pure, undeniable triumph over hate.7:33 So you have the discovery of a broken statue that defines beauty.7:37 You have the Senate vote that begins to break the chains of slavery.7:42 You have a diplomatic agreement that breaks centuries of rivalry.7:47 And you have a home run that breaks a hallowed record and a wall of prejudice.7:53 April eighth isn't a day of gentle continuity.7:56 It's a day of fractures.7:58 It's a day that teaches us that sometimes, the only way forward is to shatter what came before.8:05 History on April eighth isn't about things ending.8:09 It's about the magnificent, world-changing power of a clean break.
