0:00 The water in the creek yonder is running clear today.0:04 You can see the little minnows darting around the smooth stones.0:08 It puts me in mind of maps.0:11 The way a creek will carve a path through a holler, that’s how history makes its own map...0:18 a line drawn through time.0:20 Just yesterday, we were talking about that Louisiana Purchase from 1803...0:25 one big line drawn on a map that changed a whole country.0:30 Well, friend, just two years after Napoleon sold off all that land, he was fixing to draw another line, right across the English Channel.0:40 And what happened on this day, October twenty-first, is the reason he never got the chance.0:47 We know it now as the Battle of Trafalgar, a name in a book.0:52 But on the morning of October twenty-first, 1805, for the sailors bobbing on that gray water off the coast of Spain, it was just...1:02 Tuesday.1:02 A Tuesday where they were about to face the combined might of the French and Spanish navies.1:09 They knew a fight was coming, sure as a train coming down the track.1:15 What they didn't know, what nobody could know, was that the next few hours would decide who ruled the world's oceans for the next hundred years.1:26 And the man in charge of it all, Admiral Horatio Nelson, had absolutely no idea he was sailing into his very last sunrise.1:35 Looking back, it seems as clear as day.1:38 But for them, in that moment...1:40 they were sailing straight into the fog of what might be.1:45 That’s the space where history is actually made.1:48 Now, I know how that sounds.1:51 A little dramatic, maybe.1:53 But hang on.1:53 Let’s put ourselves on the deck of Nelson’s flagship, the H.M.S.1:58 Victory.1:59 It’s just past dawn.2:01 The sea is rolling in these long, heavy swells.2:04 And out there, strung across the horizon, is the enemy.2:08 Thirty-three ships of the line.2:11 A forest of masts.2:12 The old way of doing things, the way every admiral in the world fought a battle, was you’d line your ships up in a long single file, parallel to the enemy's line.2:25 Like two long freight trains passing each other on parallel tracks, just blasting away until one side gave up.2:33 It was orderly.2:34 It was predictable.2:36 It was boring.2:37 And Nelson was not a boring man.2:39 He had a different idea.2:41 A wild idea.2:42 He was going to split his own fleet into two columns and sail them straight AT the enemy line, perpendicular.2:50 He was going to punch right through their formation, break it all to pieces, and then just have at it in a free-for-all.2:59 Now you stay with me here.3:01 This was like deciding the best way to stop a runaway train was to park another one sideways across the tracks.3:10 Every man in that fleet, from the lowest powder monkey to the highest captain, knew this was crazy.3:18 It meant that for the first part of the battle, the lead ships would be sailing toward the enemy, unable to fire most of their own cannons, while the entire broadside of the French and Spanish ships could just tear them to shreds.3:35 It was a gamble so big it makes my palms sweat just thinking about it.3:41 But Nelson trusted his men.3:43 He trusted his gunners.3:44 He knew if they could just survive that approach, they could get in close and do what the Royal Navy did better than anyone: fight.3:55 So he ran up a signal.3:56 Just a few flags, but the words they spelled have echoed ever since: "England expects that every man will do his duty." And then...4:06 they went.4:07 The Victory, leading one column, sailed into a storm of iron and splintered wood.4:13 And for a time, it looked like a terrible mistake.4:17 But then they broke the line.4:19 And the battle turned into what they called a "pell-mell" fight...4:24 just pure, glorious, terrifying chaos.4:27 And in the middle of it, at the very height of his triumph, a French sharpshooter high in the rigging of the Redoutable took aim at the small man on the quarterdeck of the Victory, the one with all the medals on his coat.4:44 And he fired.4:45 Nelson fell.4:46 He lived just long enough to hear that the battle was won.4:51 A total victory.4:52 Nineteen enemy ships captured.4:54 Not a single British ship lost.4:57 But the cost...4:58 whoo, boy.4:58 Now, you shift the calendar forward a right smart bit.5:03 Seventy-four years to the day.5:05 October twenty-first, 1879.5:07 There’s another kind of battle going on, but this one is being fought in a little laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey.5:16 It’s a quiet battle, fought with wires and glass and a whole lot of frustration.5:22 The general here is a fellow named Thomas Alva Edison.5:26 And he’s trying to beat back the night itself.5:30 For years, Edison and dozens of other inventors had been trying to make a practical, affordable electric light.5:38 They could make light, sure.5:41 They could get a little piece of something to glow for a minute, maybe two.5:46 But then it would just...5:48 fizzle.5:49 It was a race, and Edison was pouring everything he had into it.5:54 He’d tested thousands of materials to be the filament, the little glowing part inside the glass bulb.6:01 He tried everything from platinum to...6:04 well, to hairs plucked from a friend's beard.6:08 Swear on my tackle box, that is the honest truth.6:12 Nothing worked for long.6:14 But on this day, he and his team were trying something new.6:18 A piece of simple cotton sewing thread, coated in carbon, and baked in an oven.6:24 They sealed it in a glass bulb, pumped out all the air to create a vacuum, and hooked it up to the electricity.6:33 And then they flipped the switch.6:35 And it glowed.6:36 A soft, steady, beautiful light.6:39 And it kept glowing.6:40 One hour.6:41 Two hours.6:42 They watched it, scared to breathe.6:44 The story goes they started taking bets on how long it would last.6:49 It glowed all through the night and into the next day.6:54 Thirteen and a half hours.6:56 That was it.6:57 That was the one.6:58 The world did not know it yet, but on October twenty-first, 1879, the night began to lose its grip.7:05 And you can’t talk about October twenty-first without tipping your hat to a few of the folks who showed up on this day.7:15 Alfred Nobel, born in 1833.7:17 The man who invented dynamite and then spent the rest of his life and all his money trying to make up for it with his famous prizes.7:27 And in 1917, the one and only Dizzy Gillespie was born.7:31 A man who could bend a trumpet and bend notes in ways nobody had ever heard before.7:37 From the boom of dynamite to the brilliant blast of a bebop trumpet...7:43 that's a right smart of noise for one day.7:46 But let's go back.7:47 Way back.7:48 Before Nelson, before Edison.7:50 Let's go back to 1520.7:52 Because on this day, another man was staring into the unknown, betting everything he had.7:59 His name was Ferdinand Magellan.8:01 He was a Portuguese captain sailing for Spain, and he had a simple, impossible task: find a westward route to the Spice Islands.8:11 To do it, he had to get around the great landmass of South America.8:16 And for months, he'd been sailing south, down the coast, probing every bay and inlet, looking for a passage.8:24 And finding nothing.8:26 His crew was on the edge of mutiny.8:29 They were cold, they were hungry, they were at the bottom of the world, and they were scared.8:36 They wanted to turn back.8:38 But Magellan...8:39 Magellan was stubborn.8:41 On October twenty-first, 1520, his ships came to a headland he named the Cape of the Eleven Thousand Virgins.8:49 And beyond it, they saw a deep, dark channel of water, stretching west into the land.8:55 Was it another dead-end river?8:58 Or was it the way through?9:00 No map could tell him.9:01 No one had ever been here before.9:04 He sent two ships in to explore.9:06 And he gave them five days.9:09 If it wasn't the strait, they would all turn around and go home.9:13 You can just imagine him, standing on his deck, watching those ships disappear into that gloomy channel, the fate of the entire expedition resting on what they found in the dark.9:27 When those ships came back, their flags were flying and their cannons were firing in celebration.9:35 They had found it.9:36 The passage.9:37 What we now call the Strait of Magellan.9:40 And in that moment, the world got a little smaller, and a whole lot bigger, all at once.9:47 And that’s the pivot, isn't it?9:49 That’s the spot where it all turns.9:52 For us, looking back, these things seem inevitable.9:56 Of COURSE Nelson’s tactic worked.9:58 Of COURSE Edison’s bulb lit up.10:01 Of COURSE Magellan found the strait.10:03 It’s in the history books.10:05 But on October twentieth of each of those years, it was anything but certain.10:11 Nelson was about to risk the entire defense of his nation on a strategy no one had ever tried.10:18 Edison was one more failure away from maybe giving up entirely.10:23 Magellan was about to sail into a maze of treacherous water that could have been a trap.10:30 Each one of them stood at a crossroads.10:33 Behind them was the known world, the safe way of doing things.10:38 Ahead of them was...10:39 just a guess.10:40 A hope.10:41 A belief that there was something on the other side of the risk.10:46 They made their choice not knowing the outcome.10:49 They committed.10:51 They sailed the ships, they flipped the switch, they steered into the unknown channel.10:57 And in that moment of commitment, that’s where the future was decided.11:02 We see the result and call it history.11:05 They lived the uncertainty and called it Tuesday.11:09 And that, friend, is why you check the record.11:13 It’s not just to get the dates and names right.11:16 It’s to remember that history wasn't made by statues.11:20 It was made by people.11:22 People who were just as uncertain as we are.11:25 People who hoped they were right and were terrified they might be wrong.11:31 We look at the world today, and it feels like we’re sailing in choppy waters, doesn't it?11:38 It's hard to see the way through.11:40 It's easy to think that the people who came before us had it all figured out, that they had maps we don't.11:48 But they didn't.11:50 Their maps were just as blank as ours.11:53 They just...11:54 kept sailing.11:55 They kept trying new filaments.11:57 They kept believing there was a passage, even when everyone else said to turn back.12:03 Remembering that doesn't make our own choices any easier.12:08 But it makes them feel a little less lonely.12:11 It reminds us that every great victory, every brilliant invention, every new discovery in the history of the world was, at one point, just a wild idea that somebody was brave enough, or maybe just stubborn enough, to see through.12:29 And that is a powerful thing to sit with.12:32 Well.12:32 That is about the size of it.12:34 The sun's getting low on the ridge.12:37 Another day drawing its own line on the map.12:40 I tell you what, it’s a beautiful sight.
