0:00 Looking out at the creek this evening, what strikes me about October twenty-fifth is how the world once stood convinced that handing a ballot to one hundred and seventy-three million poor, newly freed people across India was absolute madness, while we now see it as the bedrock moment of modern democracy.0:22 Yesterday, in episode two hundred and twelve, we watched how Black Thursday tore through Wall Street and shook the foundations of high finance; today, we turn the page to see how ordinary folks in the snow and across drafting tables quietly built the world right back up.0:42 Out here on this porch rocker, watching the mist settle down along the timberline, I have to tell you that there is something downright marvelous about how the biggest turns in history rarely arrive with trumpet blasts and parade banners.0:59 More often than not, they start with a few people walking through a cold mountain pass or tapping out a line of computer code that nobody quite reckoned would last.1:12 Now, if you take a slow walk through the old logs for this twenty-fifth day of October, it is plain bustling with moments where the whole locomotive of human history hit a switch track.1:25 Take October twenty-fifth, 1971, when the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 2758, officially recognizing the representatives of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate voice for China at the United Nations, setting aside the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek.1:47 That single vote reshuffled the diplomatic table for fifty years to come, tilting global trade and foreign policy onto an entirely fresh set of rails.1:58 Thirty years later to the day, on October twenty-fifth, 2001, Microsoft officially released Windows XP to the public.2:06 If you were sitting near a desktop computer back then, you remember that emerald green hill under that bright blue sky, glowing like a spring morning in the holler.2:18 It became the operating rhythm of hospitals, ticket offices, bank vaults, and railway switchyards, stubbornly refusing to die long after the engineers tried to pension it off.2:31 Then you can look back to the Crimean War on October twenty-fifth, 1854, when the British light cavalry rode straight into the Russian guns at the Battle of Balaklava.2:44 A tangled knot of vague, poorly delivered orders sent six hundred horsemen charging down a narrow valley with cannon fire tearing into both flanks, leaving a lesson in military miscommunication that officers still study by lamplight today.3:01 And October twenty-fifth had its share of quiet bravery that did not need a horse or a saber.3:08 In 1940, Colonel Benjamin O.3:10 Davis Senior was promoted to brigadier general, making him the very first African American general in the United States Army, breaking through a barrier that had held firm since the Continental Congress first mustered troops.3:27 Four years later, on this date in 1944, out in the Pacific during the climactic fighting at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the American submarine U.S.S.3:37 Tang, commanded by Richard O'Kane, was tragically sunk off the coast of China by its very own circular-running torpedo, a bitter reminder of how razor-thin the line between triumph and tragedy runs in wartime.3:53 That same day in Germany, the Nazi authorities ordered a brutal roundup of the Edelweiss Pirates, a bunch of loose-knit working-class teenagers who had been hiding army deserters and refusing to march in goose-step.4:09 You drop down into 1962 during the teeth of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and right on October twenty-fifth, Ambassador Adlai Stevenson marched into the United Nations Security Council, tore open aerial reconnaissance photographs of Soviet ballistic launch sites, and told the Soviet delegate he was prepared to wait for an answer until hell freezes over.4:35 Even in literature, this day carries a bittersweet kind of grace.4:39 Seventy years ago, on October twenty-fifth, 1956, the Spanish poet Juan Ramón Jiménez got word down in Puerto Rico that he had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his lyrical mastery.4:54 But true to the rough edges of human life, there was no grand feast.4:59 His beloved wife and lifelong intellectual partner, Zenobia Camprubí, was fading fast from illness.5:06 She passed away just three days after the news arrived, leaving the poet so heartbroken he never traveled to Stockholm; Jaime Benítez, the rector of the University of Puerto Rico, had to cross the ocean to accept the medal in his place.5:23 And then you have got the birthdays.5:26 You could assemble a whole orchestra and an art gallery just out of folks born on October twenty-fifth.5:34 In 1825, Johann Strauss the Second was born in Vienna, the man who set half the European continent twirling to The Blue Danube.5:43 Thirteen years later, on this date in 1838, Georges Bizet drew his first breath in Paris, composing the fiery rhythms of Carmen before dying at the tender age of thirty-six, long before the world truly recognized the masterpiece he had left behind.6:01 In 1881, down in Málaga, Spain, Pablo Picasso arrived, fixing to turn classical portraiture on its ear and dismantle how human beings see shape and perspective forever.6:14 And in 1984, the American pop singer Katy Perry was born, carrying that theatrical flair right into the era of stadium spotlights and digital streaming.6:25 Now, you stay with me here, because among all those names and headlines, there is one particular morning that deserves a long, quiet sit.6:35 Let us roll our minds back to the high country of Himachal Pradesh in northern India, on Thursday, October twenty-fifth, 1951.6:44 If you had picked up a newspaper in London, Paris, or Washington that autumn, the smart money was betting that India's bold experiment with self-rule was bound to derail.6:57 India had won its independence only four years earlier.7:01 The country was still nursing the deep wounds of Partition.7:05 More than eighty percent of the population could neither read nor write.7:10 The land was an immense expanse of mountains, desert valleys, dense forest, and coastal flats, speaking dozens of distinct languages and subdivided by centuries of caste and religious divides.7:25 When the framers of India's new Constitution sat down, they made a choice that left veteran observers in older Western capitals shaking their heads.7:35 They granted universal adult suffrage from day one.7:39 Every citizen aged twenty-one and older, man or woman, rich landowner or landless tenant farmer, was given an equal vote.7:48 That added up to roughly one hundred and seventy-three million eligible voters, tasked with electing four hundred and eighty-nine representatives to the first Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament.8:03 Western editorial writers called it a reckless gamble.8:07 They argued that democracy required a literate populace, comfortable wealth, and generations of gradual practice.8:15 How could a man who could not read a ballot choose between political platforms?8:21 How could you transport ballot boxes across thousands of miles without roads, bridges, or reliable telegraphs?8:29 The Indian election organizers did not argue back in the newspapers.8:34 They simply got to work.8:36 Knowing that winter snows would choke the Himalayan mountain passes and completely cut off the villages of Chini and Pangi by December, they decided not to wait for the rest of the nation.8:50 While the rest of India was scheduled to vote in the dry warmth of early 1952, polling officers hauled heavy metal ballot boxes up rocky mule tracks and through mountain valleys so those isolated Himalayan farmers could cast their ballots first, starting right on October twenty-fifth, 1951.9:11 Because millions of voters could not read the names of the candidates, the commission assigned bold graphic symbols to every party—a pair of bullocks with a yoke, a tree, a hut, an elephant.9:25 Each candidate had their own separate ballot box inside a screened voting compartment, marked with their symbol.9:33 A voter did not need to decipher a single letter of print.9:38 They walked into the quiet booth, holding a small paper token, and dropped their voice into the box bearing the sign of their choice.9:48 I tell you what, that is poetry in civic mechanics.9:51 Looking back from today, what skeptics dismissed as a logistical impossibility turned out to be the quiet dawn of the largest electoral exercise on the planet.10:03 What people in power often fail to realize is that illiteracy does not mean a lack of wisdom.10:10 A farmer who has worked forty seasons against drought and flood understands fairness, corruption, and local need every bit as sharply as a scholar in a university hall.10:22 Those first ballots dropped in the mountain snow of Chini did not just start an election; they shattered the patronizing colonial notion that democracy was an exclusive club built only for wealthy nations with paved roads.10:39 Now, lean in here, because there is an unexpected thread connecting those hand-carried Himalayan ballot boxes to that computer release in October of 2001.10:50 When Microsoft rolled out Windows XP twenty-five years ago, the tech world was at another strange crossroads.10:58 The dot-com stock bubble had just popped with a terrible clatter.11:03 Personal computers were notoriously cranky contraptions.11:07 If you owned a machine in the late nineteen-nineties, you were on a first-name basis with the blue screen of death.11:15 The operating system would freeze, your unsaved letters would vanish into the ether, and the whole contraption felt more like an unruly mule than a dependable tool.11:27 Windows XP merged consumer ease with industrial-grade stability.11:32 It took the rock-solid engine that corporations used for heavy data and wrapped it in friendly, rounded blue plastic buttons and that sunny grass-covered wallpaper called Bliss.11:45 It was so reliable, so stubbornly capable of just running, that the entire globe climbed aboard.11:52 What we did not realize at the time was how deeply it would embed itself into the unglamorous pipes of modern civilization.12:01 Ten, fifteen, twenty years later, long after the software engineers in Redmond, Washington had stopped issuing security patches and urged the world to buy newer, sleeker versions, train signals across major rail systems were still running on XP.12:19 Cash registers at the corner store, medical imaging machines in county hospitals, and automated bank teller machines throughout the countryside refused to upgrade.12:31 Why?12:32 Because it worked.12:33 It stayed put.12:34 It did not freeze when a train was barreling toward a switchback.12:39 Hindsight shows us that the biggest technological breakthroughs are rarely the ones with the flashiest gimmicks.12:47 They are the ones that become invisible infrastructure.12:51 When technology works that well, it stops being a toy for enthusiasts and becomes like the iron rails running down our creek valley—you only notice it on the rare day when it isn't humming along.13:05 And isn't that the very same lesson we learned from Pablo Picasso, born on this day in 1881?13:12 When young Pablo started out in Málaga and Barcelona, he could sketch classical figures with the precision of the old masters.13:22 He had to master the anatomy, the charcoal lines, and the traditional perspective before he could break them apart into Cubist planes.13:31 You have to build a dependable frame before you can dare to show the world a fresh way of seeing itself.13:39 Whether it was Picasso picking up a brush to paint a face from three angles at once, or Johann Strauss sitting at a piano in Vienna in 1825 dreaming up three-quarter-time rhythms that made high-society Europe spin till they were dizzy, or Georges Bizet pouring raw Spanish passion into an opera house that was not quite ready for it—October twenty-fifth has always belonged to the architects of staying power.14:09 When you look back through the glass of time, you realize that history is never a straight, predictable track laid down by kings and generals alone.14:20 It turns on tiny decisions that could have veered off into the gravel just as easily.14:26 If those election officers in Himachal Pradesh had thrown their hands up at the snowdrifts and postponed the vote, if the Indian government had lost its nerve and restricted the franchise only to property owners who could sign their names, democratic rights might have become an exclusive privilege rather than a universal standard across the developing world.14:53 If the British officers at Balaklava had written their orders with twenty more words of plain clarity, the Light Brigade might have wheeled safely around the hill, and Alfred, Lord Tennyson would have had no tragic poem to scribble about the Valley of Death.15:12 If Microsoft had shipped another brittle, crash-prone operating system in the autumn of 2001, our digital workspace might have fractured into a dozen incompatible dialects.15:25 None of it was preordained.15:27 Every single outcome was hammered out by folks standing in the boots of the moment, dealing with the tools, the blizzards, and the incomplete information they had right in front of them.15:40 And that, friend, is why you check the record.15:44 What October twenty-fifth teaches us right here in the present tense is that the systems that end up lasting the longest are the ones built wide enough to include everybody.15:56 You can see it in a villager dropping a paper vote into a tin trunk marked with a picture of a plough; you can see it in an operating system simple enough for a schoolchild and sturdy enough for a freight dispatch depot; you can hear it in a melody written two hundred years ago that still makes a stranger tap their boot on a hardwood floor.16:22 The light is fading behind the ridge now, and the water down in the creek is running quiet and cold over the limestone.16:30 We reckon tomorrow will bring its own share of weather and noise, but down deep, the world keeps moving along tracks laid down by people who simply refused to let the snow or the skeptics stop them.16:45 Well.16:45 That is about the size of it.
