0:00 On the twenty-second of October, people have continually wagered their lives and fortunes on things the rest of the world swore were pure foolishness, never suspecting that their stubborn little gambles were about to wire the modern world together.0:18 Yesterday we sat right here and talked about October twenty-first, looking at how folks spent centuries drawing hard borders and battle lines across land and water.0:31 Today, the calendar flips, and we find ourselves looking at what happens when somebody decides to step clean over the edge of those lines.0:41 Take a look out yonder past the tree line, where the mist is just lifting off the ridge.0:48 When you look back at history from a good distance, say ten or twenty years down the track, the whole landscape levels out.0:57 What felt like an absolute panic on a Tuesday afternoon turns out to be just a little gravel under the wheels, while some quiet, dusty fellow working in a back room turns out to have built the engine that runs our whole lives.1:14 That gap between what people thought was happening on this day and what was actually being born is the sweetest part of the whole run.1:24 You take October twenty-second, nineteen thirty-eight.1:28 If you had picked up a newspaper that morning, you would have read about trade treaties, the price of winter wheat, and the terrible dark clouds gathering over Europe.1:41 Nobody on earth was paying attention to a rented second-floor apartment behind a beauty parlor in Astoria, Queens.1:50 Inside that kitchen stood a young, out-of-work patent attorney named Chester Carlson, alongside an Austrian physicist named Otto Kornei.2:00 Carlson suffered from terrible arthritis.2:03 His fingers hurt him day and night, and he spent his working hours copying out patent applications by hand with carbon paper.2:13 He figured there simply had to be a way to let light and static electricity do the drudgery.2:20 So on October twenty-second, nineteen thirty-eight, Carlson took a zinc plate coated with sulfur, took it into a dark room, rubbed that plate with a handkerchief to give it an electrostatic charge, and laid a small glass microscope slide on top of it.2:39 Written on that slide in India ink were four simple items: the date, ten dash twenty-two dash thirty-eight, and the place, Astoria.2:48 He held a bright incandescent lamp over it for a few seconds, pulled the slide away, dusted the zinc plate with lycopodium powder, and gently blew the excess away.3:01 There it was.3:02 A faint, smudged, perfect duplicate.3:05 Now, you would think the world beat a path straight to his front door.3:10 But that is the hindsight trap talking.3:13 To the men running big business in nineteen thirty-eight, Chester Carlson was just a crank with sulfur dust in his hair.3:22 He spent the next six years knocking on doors.3:25 Twenty different corporations, including giants like General Electric, I.B.M., and R.C.A., turned him down flat.3:34 They said carbon paper was cheap, carbon paper worked fine, and nobody in their right mind would pay thousands of dollars for a complicated electric cabinet just to copy a piece of paper.3:48 They could not see that he had not just made a copy; he had invented xerography.3:54 He had created the very circulatory system of modern office bureaucracy, information sharing, and eventually desktop printing.4:04 Today, every time you tap a copy button or print a receipt, you are shaking hands with a fellow who stood in a sulfur-smelling kitchen on this very afternoon, grinning at a dirty piece of zinc.4:18 That is the funny thing about October twenty-second.4:22 People keep taking these wild, dizzying leaps into thin air, entirely convinced they are right while everyone standing on the ground is holding their breath, waiting for the crash.4:36 You go back another hundred and forty-one years before Chester Carlson, back to October twenty-second, seventeen ninety-seven.4:45 Head across the Atlantic to the Parc Monceau in Paris.4:49 A massive crowd had gathered, thousands of folks craning their necks up into the autumn sky.4:56 They were looking at a twenty-eight-year-old fellow named André-Jacques Garnerin, who was hanging in a wicker basket beneath a hot-air balloon, climbing thousands of feet above the city roofs.5:11 Now, balloon ascents were already a grand spectacle, but Garnerin had not come to look at the view.5:18 He had rigged up a white canvas umbrella, twenty-three feet across, with a wooden hoop and thirty-six ropes running down to his little basket.5:29 At three thousand two hundred feet, right where the wind cuts cold and sharp, Garnerin took out a pocketknife and deliberately severed the rope connecting his basket to the balloon.5:43 The balloon floated off and burst, exactly like it was supposed to.5:48 The canvas umbrella opened with a loud snap, and the crowd below let out a collective wail because they thought they were watching a man commit suicide in broad daylight.6:01 Garnerin had not put an air vent in the top of his canopy.6:05 As that umbrella trapped the air, the air spilled violently out from one side, then the other, sending his basket into wild, sickening swings.6:16 It swung like a pendulum through a ninety-degree arc, dipping and plunging through the clouds.6:23 Garnerin became violently airsick on the way down, but the contraption held.6:29 He hit the ground in the park, tumbled out of the wicker, and walked away with nothing more than a scraped foot and a badly bruised ego from the nausea.6:40 He had just completed the very first recorded human parachute descent from high altitude.6:47 When folks watched him drop, they saw a madman doing a carnival stunt.6:52 What they did not see was the foundation of aerial safety, the birth of paratroopers, and the device that would one day bring space capsules drifting softly down into the ocean.7:06 It looked like madness until the exact second it worked.7:10 And speaking of people who made crowds lose their absolute minds, October twenty-second is the birthday of a man who invented a whole different kind of fever.7:22 October twenty-second, eighteen eleven, out in the Kingdom of Hungary, a boy named Franz Liszt came into the world.7:31 By the eighteen forties, Liszt had turned classical piano into something that looked less like a chapel recital and more like a riot at a locomotive crossing.7:43 The German writer Heinrich Heine actually coined a medical-sounding word for it: Lisztomania.7:50 Liszt would walk onto a stage wearing velvet gloves, peel them off, toss them into the audience, and women would literally tear each other's hair out trying to grab the fingers of those gloves.8:04 They would snatch up his discarded cigar butts and hide them in diamond-encrusted lockets.8:11 They fought over the broken piano strings he left behind after hammering the keys so hard the wooden action splintered.8:20 Before Liszt, solo pianists sat sideways or kept their backs to the crowd, playing with polite restraint.8:28 Liszt turned the piano profile so the audience could see his profile, his flowing hair, his hands flying like swooping swallows.8:38 He invented the modern solo recital.8:40 He was the prototype for the twentieth-century rock star, a hundred years before electric guitars were even imagined.8:49 If you watch old footage of teenagers screaming at the Beatles at Shea Stadium, you are just watching Liszt's ghost having a good laugh from the cheap seats.9:01 Yet for all the joy and spectacle that hangs on this date, October twenty-second also carries the weight of those moments where the track suddenly switched, and humanity found itself staring straight down a canyon.9:17 You ask folks of my generation where they were on Monday night, October twenty-second, nineteen sixty-two, and their faces will change.9:28 The smile fades right off.9:30 At seven in the evening, Eastern Standard Time, President John F.9:34 Kennedy sat down at a desk in the Oval Office, looked directly into the television cameras, and spoke to a nation of a hundred and eighty million people.9:46 He announced that American spy planes had discovered Soviet medium-range ballistic missile sites under construction on the island of Cuba, barely ninety miles from the coast of Florida.10:00 He told the country that the United States military was establishing a strict naval quarantine around the island, and that any missile launched from Cuba against any nation in the Western Hemisphere would be regarded as an attack requiring a full retaliatory response upon the Soviet Union.10:22 That was the night the world held its breath.10:25 I remember the silence in the depot that evening.10:29 It was quieter than a crappie bed at dawn.10:32 People walked into grocery stores and bought canned beans and water jugs without saying two words to the cashier.10:41 Families sat around radio consoles and black-and-white television sets, listening to the ticking of their mantle clocks, wondering if the sun was going to come up on Tuesday.10:54 In that moment, it felt like an iron rail running straight down an unavoidable hill toward annihilation.11:02 But looking back from sixty years away, we can see the hidden machinery that the public had no way of knowing about.11:11 We know now about the secret communications, the back-channel letters passed between Robert Kennedy and Anatoly Dobrynin, and the quiet trade of American missiles in Turkey that would eventually untie the knot.11:27 What looked like an inevitable, thunderous collision was actually a masterclass in buying time.11:34 Kennedy chose a naval blockade rather than the immediate air strike his generals were screaming for, specifically because a blockade gave both sides a few days to think, to sweat, and to negotiate.11:49 The pivot point between survival and catastrophe was not strength; it was the deliberate choice to slow the train down before it hit the curve.12:00 Now, if you want to see how a single mistake on this date can reshape the entire map of human knowledge, you have to go back to the foggy night of October twenty-second, seventeen seven.12:14 A powerful fleet of twenty-one Royal Navy warships, commanded by Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, was sailing home toward England after a long campaign in the Mediterranean.12:27 The weather was foul, the Atlantic was churning with heavy squalls, and the fog was as thick as mutton tallow.12:35 For twelve days, the fleet had not seen the sun, the moon, or a single star.12:41 In seventeen seven, navigators had plenty of tools to figure out their latitude, how far north or south they were, by measuring the sun at noon.12:52 But calculating longitude, how far east or west you were, was flatly impossible on a rolling ship.12:59 They had to rely on dead reckoning: throwing a log tied to a knotted rope overboard, counting the knots as they slipped away, and guessing how far the wind and current had pushed them.13:13 Admiral Shovell called a council of his senior navigators aboard his flagship, the Association.13:20 They spread their charts out by candlelight, compared their logbooks, and agreed: they were well out in the safe, open waters of the English Channel, comfortably east of the dangerous granite teeth known as the Scilly Isles.13:37 Swear on my tackle box, they were off by miles.13:41 Just around eight o'clock that evening, the Association struck the rocks of Gilstone Ledges at full speed.13:49 Within three or four minutes, the flagship went down with all eight hundred men aboard.13:55 Three other warships, the Eagle, the Romney, and the Firebrand, crashed right behind her in the dark.14:03 Nearly two thousand British sailors drowned in the surf within sight of the Scilly cliffs, including Admiral Shovell himself.14:12 It was the worst maritime disaster in British history.14:16 And the counterfactual is what keeps historians up at night.14:21 If the skies had cleared for just one hour, or if Shovell had heeded the legendary warning of a local sailor who supposedly kept his own reckoning, those ships would have dropped anchor in safe harbor.14:36 Instead, the sheer horror of that October night shocked the British government into doing something unprecedented.14:45 Seven years later, Parliament passed the famous Longitude Act of seventeen fourteen, offering a king's ransom of twenty thousand pounds to anyone who could solve the problem of finding longitude at sea.15:00 That disaster on October twenty-second directly created the environment that allowed a humble Yorkshire carpenter and clockmaker named John Harrison to spend his life inventing the marine chronometer: the ultra-precise sea clock that eventually unlocked the entire globe.15:21 Without those four ships shattering on the Scilly rocks in the dark, the technology of global navigation, mapmaking, and worldwide commerce might have stayed stalled in the fog for another hundred years.15:36 A terrible tragedy became the mother of modern precision.15:40 When you lay all these pieces side by side, you start to see the golden thread running through this date.15:48 On October twenty-second, humanity has a habit of revealing what it actually values.15:55 We look at the courage of Garnerin stepping out of that balloon, or the sheer stubborn grit of Chester Carlson blowing sulfur dust off a zinc plate in an apartment kitchen, and we realize that the future never arrives with a brass band playing a march.16:14 It arrives looking awkward, smelling slightly strange, and carrying a tremendous risk of making a fool out of yourself.16:23 Looking back from ten years down the road at the world we are living in right now, we are going to look at our current assumptions with that very same squint.16:35 We spend so much of our time worrying about the noisy crises of the day, convinced that the world is balancing on the edge of a knife, just like people felt during the missile crisis in sixty-two.16:50 And just like then, the real turning points are probably unfolding in quiet rooms where folks are testing ideas that the big corporations are currently laughing out the door.17:03 We can already see the evidence of this around us today; we are just not naming it yet.17:09 We are living through another era of wild leaps, where people are trying to teach silicon how to think, or trying to capture sunlight in salt, or figuring out how to stitch human biology to microscopic machinery.17:25 Half of it looks like Garnerin swinging wildly under an unvented umbrella, looking ridiculous and making everyone nervous.17:35 But hidden inside that messy, awkward experimenting is the tool that our grandchildren will take for granted, the way we take a printed piece of paper or a ship arriving safely into port.17:49 History is not a line carved into stone, friend.17:52 It is a live wire.17:54 It is people making guesses in the fog, betting their lives that the calculations will hold, and occasionally stumbling into something magnificent that lights up the whole valley.18:07 The wind is picking up off the water down there, and the sun is just about slipping behind the ridge.18:15 Well.18:15 That is about the size of it.
