0:00 When Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, The Atlantic Monthly found the narrative voice of a six-year-old girl with an adult's prose style...0:11 well, implausible.0:12 Oh, they weren’t wrong.0:13 We're jumping right in!0:15 Last week, on our Classic Clash episode, we asked if timeless works can still resonate.0:21 So today, we're putting maybe the biggest one of all on trial: To Kill a Mockingbird.0:27 Is it still the essential lesson in empathy we all remember, or is it, uh, something we should have left in high school?0:35 I mean, you started with the perfect critique.0:38 That implausible voice is the key to the whole problem.0:42 It's a story about racial injustice in the American South, but it's told through a lens that’s designed to make it palatable for a white audience.0:52 Okay, but hold on.0:53 I'd argue that's its genius.0:55 Seeing prejudice through the innocent eyes of Scout Finch is what makes it so powerful.1:01 It sold over forty million copies!1:03 It’s never been out of print.1:05 You don’t get that by being a "problem." You get that by being what one critic called "literary ointment for white guilt." It soothes the conscience.1:15 The black characters in that book, um, they're barely characters.1:20 They're symbols.1:21 They exist to teach the white characters—and the white reader—a moral lesson.1:26 That feels...1:27 incredibly cynical.1:28 This book landed like a bomb during the civil rights movement.1:33 The character of Atticus Finch, especially Gregory Peck's portrayal, became a national symbol of integrity.1:40 That's not just ointment, that's an aspirational figure.1:44 Oh, let's PLEASE talk about Atticus.1:46 The noble, courageous Atticus.1:48 The man who was revealed in 2015, with the publication of Go Set a Watchman, to be a bitter segregationist.1:56 Okay, I will give you that.1:57 Watchman complicates the legacy.2:00 A lot.2:00 Learning that the book we love was a revised version of a story with a racist Atticus...2:06 it's a shock to the system.2:08 It's more than a shock!2:09 It's the truth behind the myth!2:12 The Wall Street Journal's Allen Barra called the book we know a "sugar-coated myth" with "bloodless liberal humanism." He was right!2:21 The version that became a classic was the one that made the white lawyer a saint and sanded off the ugly reality.2:28 But does that discovery erase the good the book did?2:32 For sixty years, Mockingbird was the first time millions of kids ever had a structured conversation about systemic injustice.2:40 The ideal of Atticus, even if it was just an ideal, mattered.2:45 But what if the ideal itself is the problem now?2:48 The story centers the white lawyer, the white family, the white perspective.2:53 Maybe the lesson we need now isn't about a benevolent white savior, but about listening to the people who don't get a voice in that book.3:02 I hear you on the white savior critique, I do.3:06 But you're throwing out the core theme, which is empathy.3:09 "You never really understand a person until you...3:13 climb into his skin and walk around in it." That message is not dated.3:18 That is NEVER dated.3:19 The message isn't dated, I agree.3:21 But the messenger is.3:23 The book itself, with its underdeveloped black characters and its beatified hero, feels like a relic.3:30 It "cherishes its own goodness," as The New Yorker put it.3:34 We can do better now.3:35 So you're saying it's a historical document, not a living one.3:39 I'm saying its value is in showing us the limits of a certain kind of well-meaning liberalism from the 1960s.3:47 It’s a photograph of what a "brave" conversation looked like then.3:51 But we're not in that conversation anymore.3:54 So we're left with this, then.3:56 Is a classic's job to be a perfect, timeless moral guide?4:00 Or is its real job to be a snapshot of a moment, with all its beauty, all its courage, and all its profound blind spots?4:08 And which one of those is actually more important for us to be reading today.
