0:00 The final line of Casablanca, "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship," was written the morning it was shot and dubbed in later.0:11 The writers had NO idea how the movie was going to end until the very last minute.0:17 It’s this perfect chaos that makes me think about our debate last week on whether timeless works still resonate—because if anything is considered timeless, it’s this film.0:30 And I think that chaos is exactly what we need to talk about.0:34 Because for me, some of that last-minute-ness...0:38 it shows.0:38 Look, I’m not a monster.0:40 I know this film is a legend.0:42 But does it actually HOLD UP today, or are we just grading it on a curve because of its reputation?0:50 Okay, grading on a curve?0:51 That's fighting words.0:53 For me, it's the opposite.0:55 It feels more relevant now.0:57 We live in this deeply cynical age, and who is more cynical than Rick Blaine?1:03 He's not a hero.1:04 He's a bitter guy running a bar who says "I stick my neck out for nobody." That journey—from pure self-interest to sacrifice—is EVERYTHING.1:14 It's not a simple good-versus-evil story.1:17 I hear you on Rick, I do.1:19 Humphrey Bogart’s performance is iconic for a reason.1:23 But—and this is a big but—the entire story hinges on a romance that feels… uncomfortable now.1:30 Let’s talk about Ilsa Lund.1:32 Uncomfortable how?1:33 She’s trapped between the man she loves and the man she respects, who also happens to be a war hero.1:41 It’s a classic, tragic dilemma.1:43 Is it?1:43 Or is she just a beautiful object of conflict between two men?1:48 Her big, emotional moment is when she pulls a gun on Rick and then immediately collapses, saying, "You'll have to do the thinking for both of us." For BOTH of us?2:00 Can you imagine a major film getting away with its romantic heroine having zero agency like that today?2:08 Wow.2:08 Okay.2:08 I see that as a moment of absolute desperation, not a lack of agency.2:13 She's at the end of her rope.2:15 She’s tried everything.2:17 That line is a surrender to an impossible situation.2:21 It’s not a statement of her entire character.2:24 But it sort of IS her character, isn't it?2:27 Everything she does is a reaction to Rick or to Victor Laszlo.2:32 We see the world through Rick's eyes, we feel his pain.2:36 Ilsa… she’s just kind of this beautiful, sad catalyst for his big decision.2:42 Honestly, the romance is the part that feels the most like a dusty museum piece to me.2:48 Alright, I’ll give you that one.2:50 The portrayal of Ilsa isn't how we'd write a female lead in 2024.2:55 But the film is so much more than the romance.2:59 It's about ideology.3:00 It was made in 1942, before the U.S.3:03 even entered the war in Europe in a big way.3:06 It was a call to arms against fascism, a plea for interventionism.3:11 And that was incredibly brave!3:13 I completely agree.3:15 But watching it now, it feels a little… simple?3:18 The Nazis are just these sneering, one-dimensional villains.3:22 The real world is so much messier, and the film’s political message, while vital for its time, lacks the nuance we expect today.3:32 The complexity is all inside Rick's head, not in the world around him.3:37 That's fair, except the central theme—cynicism versus idealism, sticking your neck out versus staying safe—that's not simple at all.3:47 That's the question everyone was asking in 1942, and frankly, it's a question we're still asking now.3:54 Do you get involved in a messy world, or do you lock the doors and hope for the best?4:01 Yeah...4:01 you know, that part does land.4:03 The idea of being forced to pick a side when you’d rather just be left alone.4:09 So maybe the politics aren't dated, just...4:12 the packaging is.4:14 Exactly.4:14 The packaging is a product of its time—the lighting, the dialogue, the studio system.4:20 But the moral engine at its core is what makes it a masterpiece.4:25 It earns its status every time someone watches it and feels that pull Rick feels.4:31 I guess I just land in a different place.4:34 I think it's a historically crucial film, a beautifully crafted artifact that everyone should see.4:42 But a timeless masterpiece that speaks as powerfully now as it did then?4:47 Uhm, I don't know.4:48 I think its flaws are just a little too bright in modern light.4:53 So the real question isn't whether it's good, because of course it is.4:58 The question is whether a film can be a true masterpiece if its central romance feels fundamentally broken to a modern viewer.5:07 Exactly.5:08 Can we, and should we, separate the art from the era that now makes us cringe?5:14 And on that one… I’m not sure we can.
