0:00 Voltaire wrote more than twenty-thousand letters and over two-thousand books and pamphlets in his lifetime.0:07 Last week, in our series of impossible dialogues, we imagined John Locke and Confucius debating the nature of government.0:16 Today, we're staging another, asking what happens when the man who wrote a library’s worth of arguments for gradual change meets the man who said we can no longer afford to wait.0:29 And the core of it is this deep, fundamental disagreement on how a society actually gets better.0:36 Is it through slow, careful, rational persuasion?0:39 Or is it through direct, disruptive, moral confrontation?0:43 Exactly.0:44 So let's put them at the table.0:46 On one side, you have Voltaire.0:48 The titan of the Enlightenment.0:51 He believes the greatest enemy is what he called "l'infâme" — the infamous thing.0:56 He meant superstition, fanaticism, intolerance.1:00 And his weapon against it was ALWAYS reason.1:03 His whole strategy was to enlighten the powerful.1:06 You know, he wrote to kings like Frederick the Great of Prussia and Catherine the Great of Russia.1:13 His theory was, if you can get the person in charge to think rationally, to embrace tolerance, the whole society will slowly, carefully, reform itself from the top down.1:26 And he saw the alternative as pure chaos.1:29 For him, mass movements, especially ones driven by passion, were terrifying.1:34 They looked just like the religious fanaticism he spent his life fighting.1:39 He would see a protest and think, this is one step away from a mob with pitchforks.1:45 Yeah, and then on the other side of the table, you have Doctor Martin Luther King Junior, who would look at Voltaire's strategy and say, with all due respect, you have been waiting for three hundred and forty years for our constitutional and God-given rights.2:04 That line from the "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" is the perfect counterpoint.2:10 It's EVERYTHING.2:11 King's argument is that systems of oppression don't just reform themselves because someone writes a clever pamphlet.2:19 The powerful don't give up power willingly.2:22 He'd say, "Voltaire, your faith in the reason of kings is misplaced.2:27 True change happens when the oppressed create a crisis that the powerful can no longer ignore." Okay, but Voltaire would push back hard on that.2:37 He'd say, "Creating a crisis is playing with fire." The French Revolution, which happened right after he died, started with his own Enlightenment ideals and ended in the Reign of Terror.2:51 He would argue that unleashing popular passion, even for a good cause, is a gamble you almost always lose.2:59 That's a fair point, except King wasn't advocating for chaos.3:03 He was advocating for non-violent direct action.3:06 It's a crucial distinction.3:08 It's not a mob with pitchforks; it's a disciplined, strategic movement designed to expose the brutality of the existing system.3:17 How so?3:18 Think about the Birmingham campaign.3:21 The goal of the marches, the sit-ins...3:23 it wasn't to physically overthrow the government.3:27 It was to create a scene so morally REPULSIVE — police dogs attacking children, firehoses turned on peaceful protesters — that the rest of the country, the so-called "white moderates," could no longer look away.3:42 So the disruption isn't the goal, it's the tactic to force a moral reckoning.3:48 Exactly.3:48 King would say to Voltaire, "Your reason is a beautiful tool, but it's useless if no one is listening.3:55 We have to MAKE them listen." His method wasn't about abandoning reason; it was about creating the conditions where reason could finally be heard.4:06 I hear you, but I think Voltaire would still be deeply skeptical.4:11 He'd argue that you're putting your faith in the restraint of the crowd...4:16 and the restraint of the police.4:18 You're betting that things won't spiral into the very violence you're trying to protest.4:25 For him, the risk of unleashing that fanaticism is just too great.4:29 Better to write another letter, to educate another prince.4:34 And King's response to that is devastatingly simple.4:37 He'd say, "You speak of patience from a position of comfort." For the person feeling the sting of segregation every single day, being told to wait for gradual change feels like being told to accept injustice indefinitely.4:53 Ohhh, that's the heart of it, isn't it?4:56 The clash between the philosopher in his study and the pastor on the streets.5:02 It is.5:02 Voltaire's approach is one of intellectual prudence.5:06 He believes that a bad idea — intolerance, superstition — must be replaced by a better one.5:12 And that takes time.5:14 It's like turning a giant ship.5:16 You can't just crank the wheel.5:18 Right.5:19 You have to persuade the captain and the officers, and slowly, the ship will come around.5:25 Um, yes.5:26 But King is saying, "There are people drowning in the water RIGHT NOW.5:31 We don't have time to persuade the captain.5:34 We need to ring every alarm bell on this ship until someone does something." He called gradualism the "tranquilizing drug" of the privileged.5:44 Wow.5:44 So here's the peak of their disagreement.5:47 It boils down to one word: "Wait." For Voltaire, waiting is a sign of wisdom.5:53 It's strategic patience.5:54 It's preventing a violent backlash that could set progress back for decades.6:00 And for King, "wait" is the language of the oppressor.6:04 In his letter, he says it's a word that rings in the ear of every Negro with piercing familiarity.6:11 He writes, "'Wait' has almost always meant 'Never.'" Justice too long delayed is justice denied.6:18 That's the soul of his argument.6:20 He would say to Voltaire, "Your fear of the mob is understandable.6:25 But you must have a greater fear of the silent, grinding violence of an unjust system." Alright, I'll give you that one.6:33 The violence of the status quo is still violence, even if it's quiet.6:38 But I have to believe Voltaire would have one more counter.6:43 He'd point to his own success.6:45 He fought for legal reforms, for the rights of religious minorities, and he WON some of those fights.6:52 He did.6:52 The Calas affair is a great example.6:55 He used his pen to exonerate a man wrongly executed for religious bigotry.7:00 Exactly.7:01 He did it through pamphlets, letters, and public pressure on the legal system.7:07 He didn't organize a single march.7:09 He'd say, "See?7:10 Reason works.7:11 It's slow, but it's permanent." I think King would acknowledge that victory.7:16 He'd respect the tool.7:18 But he'd also point out the LIMITS of that tool.7:22 Voltaire could sway a king on a specific injustice, but did his letters dismantle the system of aristocracy?7:29 Did they end the profound inequality of 18th-century France?7:34 No.7:34 So Voltaire was treating the symptoms, while King was trying to cure the disease.7:40 I think that's how King would see it, yes.7:43 He'd argue that you need both.7:45 You need the sharp legal and intellectual arguments, for sure.7:49 But you also need the moral force of collective action to break open the system itself.7:56 You can't just politely ask for your freedom.7:59 It's fascinating, because in the end, they were both optimists.8:03 They both believed in progress.8:06 They both dedicated their lives to fighting for a better, more just world.8:11 They just had fundamentally different theories of change.8:15 And different sources of faith, you know?8:18 Voltaire's faith was in the human mind.8:21 He believed that if people could just be taught to think clearly, to be rational, society would improve.8:28 It's a faith in intellect.8:30 That's a great way to put it.8:32 And King?8:33 King's faith was in the human spirit.8:35 And in a moral arc of the universe that bends toward justice.8:40 He believed that appealing to conscience, to empathy, to a shared sense of right and wrong...8:47 that was the ultimate power.8:49 It's a faith in the soul.8:50 So one puts his trust in the head, the other in the heart.8:55 And maybe that's the real tension here.8:57 It's not just about tactics — pamphlets versus protests.9:01 It's about what you believe is the most powerful force for change in the world.9:07 And we're still having that same debate today, in every argument about how to fix what's broken.9:14 Do you work within the system, or do you stand outside and try to break it open?9:20 So the impossible dialogue between them doesn't give us an answer.9:24 It just makes the question sharper.9:27 When we see injustice, do we trust the slow, patient work of changing minds, or the urgent, disruptive work of demanding change now?
