0:00 On October 29th, 1945, thousands of people lined up outside Gimbels department store in New York City to buy a pen.0:09 Not just any pen—the first ballpoint available in the U.S., priced at twelve dollars and fifty cents.0:17 That’s over two hundred dollars today.0:20 And almost every single one of those pens failed.0:23 They leaked, they skipped, they stopped working within days.0:28 It was a total disaster.0:30 And it wasn't the first.0:32 The ballpoint pen had been a failed invention for almost sixty years.0:37 Sixty years?0:38 I thought it was a post-war thing.0:41 Not at all.0:42 The first patent was filed in 1888 by a guy named John J.0:46 Loud.0:47 He was a leather tanner, and he wanted a pen that could write on rough leather hides.0:54 A fountain pen nib would just shred.0:56 So he designed a tiny metal ball held in a socket.1:00 It worked… on leather.1:02 But on paper?1:03 The ink was too thin, it flooded the page.1:06 A complete mess.1:08 So the problem wasn't the ball, it was the ink.1:11 The problem was BOTH.1:13 They are a single, unified system.1:16 The ink has to be a specific kind of non-Newtonian fluid—a thixotropic gel.1:22 It has to be thick as paste inside the cartridge, but the friction of the rolling ball has to liquefy it just enough to flow onto the paper, where it dries almost instantly.1:35 Get the viscosity wrong by a fraction?1:38 You either get a leaky mess or a pen that won't write at all.1:43 Okay, so who finally cracks it?1:46 A Hungarian journalist, László Bíró.1:48 He noticed that the ink used in newspapers dried super fast.1:53 He spent years with his brother, a chemist, trying to adapt that thick, viscous ink for a pen.2:01 They finally nailed the combination: a perfectly spherical tungsten carbide ball in a precision-engineered socket, fed by a thick, oil-based ink.2:12 But even then, it was a luxury item.2:15 An expensive, difficult-to-manufacture tool.2:18 This whole story...2:20 it reminds me of something.2:22 This expensive, revolutionary gadget that barely works for most people.2:28 It's the early personal computer.2:30 Absolutely.2:31 John Loud’s pen is the abacus.2:33 The disastrous Reynolds pen from 1945?2:36 That’s the Altair 8800—a kit for hobbyists that promised a revolution and mostly just frustrated you.2:44 Bíró’s pen is the Apple II.2:47 Finally, a functional product.2:49 But it’s expensive, and it’s for a niche market.2:53 So who’s the IBM of this story?2:55 Who makes the cheap clone that takes over the world?2:59 A French manufacturer named Marcel Bich.3:02 He saw the failed Reynolds pens and the expensive Bíró pens and didn't see a product.3:09 He saw a manufacturing problem.3:12 He bought the patent from Bíró, and then spent two years perfecting the industrial process.3:19 He made the ball spherical to within one micron.3:23 One micron.3:23 He formulated the perfect ink.3:26 And then he made the most important decision of all.3:30 Which was?3:31 He made it disposable.3:32 He launched the Bic Cristal in 1950 for a few francs.3:37 He didn't sell a pen.3:38 He sold a cheap, reliable, disposable writing unit.3:42 He turned a piece of technology into a commodity.3:46 He understood the real revolution wasn't the invention.3:50 It was making the invention so cheap and reliable that you didn't think about it anymore.3:58 You just used it, lost it, and bought another.4:01 The Bic Cristal isn’t a monument to genius; it’s a monument to obsessive, boring, brilliant manufacturing.
