0:00 Bhavin Turakhia just put thirty million dollars of his own money into a new AI startup he launched today, called Neo.0:07 This isn't just another founder starting another company.0:11 In episode sixty-eight, we talked about Crusoe’s massive three-billion-dollar move shaking up the AI cloud wars.0:18 Well, this is the other side of that coin — a veteran Indian entrepreneur making a huge, personal bet on where the application layer is headed next.0:28 And he's not alone in making big moves.0:30 The whole ecosystem is on fire.0:32 Sarvam AI just closed a two-hundred-thirty-four-million-dollar round led by HCL, pushing its valuation to one-point-five billion.0:41 That's a new unicorn.0:42 Meanwhile, to give you a sense of scale, Kuaishou's AI venture Kling just raised two-point-eight BILLION dollars with backing from Alibaba and Tencent.0:52 The capital is flowing.0:53 Overall funding for Indian startups in June hit one-point-nine billion dollars...0:58 that's up ninety-one percent from last year.1:01 And all this money is chasing talent — AI hiring is now dramatically outpacing general IT recruitment.1:08 Even global players are doubling down, with Lenovo just crossing two billion dollars in revenue here, driven by its own AI and manufacturing expansion.1:18 So let's go back to that Sarvam AI deal.1:20 A two-hundred-thirty-four-million-dollar round is big, yes.1:24 A one-point-five-billion-dollar valuation is unicorn territory, absolutely.1:29 But the money isn't even the most important part of this deal.1:33 Here's the catch.1:34 Buried in the announcement is the fact that the Indian government, through its IndiaAI Mission, is taking a one to two percent stake in the company.1:44 Now, this isn't a cash investment.1:46 It's an equity stake in exchange for non-cash support, which likely means access to compute, data, and government infrastructure.1:54 Think about what that means.1:56 This isn't just another VC deal.1:58 This is the government actively picking a winner.2:01 They're building a national champion.2:04 The goal here is explicit: AI sovereignty.2:06 New Delhi is making a clear statement that it wants to reduce India's reliance on foreign AI technologies, especially American and Chinese ones.2:16 So when you see Sarvam AI, don't just see a startup.2:19 You should see a strategic national asset in the making.2:23 Okay, so while the government is playing that top-down strategic game, there’s a completely different battle happening on the ground.2:31 And it comes down to a simple question: how do you actually build all this AI stuff?2:37 You're seeing two completely different answers emerge.2:40 On one hand, you have a huge number of Indian startups flocking to what are called open-weight AI models.2:47 The reason is simple.2:49 One word: COST.2:50 Proprietary models from the big global labs come with huge licensing fees.2:54 Open-weight models...2:56 they're basically free to use and modify.2:58 It's a pragmatic, cost-driven choice that lets more people get in the game.3:03 But then you have Nvidia.3:05 And Nvidia just changed the rules.3:07 They've just introduced a new revenue-sharing model for their hardware and software stack.3:13 Here’s what that means.3:14 Instead of a startup having to spend millions upfront on GPUs and infrastructure — a wait that can take months — Nvidia is basically saying, "Don't worry about it." They're offering faster access to their full stack...3:29 and in return, they'll take a piece of the revenue you generate.3:33 So you have this incredible tension.3:35 Do you go with the free, open, 'good enough' model that you control completely?3:40 Or do you partner with the undisputed leader in hardware, get the best performance on day one, but give up a slice of your future earnings?3:49 There is no easy answer.3:51 But this single decision — which model to build on — is defining the trajectory of hundreds of new companies right now.3:58 This isn't just a technical choice anymore.4:01 It's a fundamental business strategy.4:04 And it shows the Indian AI ecosystem isn't just in an experimental phase.4:08 It’s making hard-nosed, strategic decisions about how to compete and how to win.
