0:00 Indian semiconductor startups have already raised eighty-one percent of ALL of last year's funding — and we're only in August.0:07 Last week on 'Inside India's Tech Surge,' we talked about the big picture of funding and the future of AI.0:14 Well, this new data on semiconductors puts a VERY sharp point on that story, showing exactly where the smart money is starting to flow.0:22 And it’s not the only big move.0:24 AI-related mergers and acquisitions have blown past last year's numbers, hitting nine hundred and eighty million dollars by early August.0:33 For context, that's more than the six hundred and twenty-four million from all of 2025.0:38 Consolidation is here, and it's accelerating.0:41 We're seeing Indian IT giants like HCL Technologies making major plays, becoming an OpenAI Advanced Partner and snapping up parts of Hewlett Packard Enterprise's business.0:52 They're not waiting to see how the AI story plays out; they're buying their seat at the table.0:58 On the venture side, Accel just announced a new five hundred and fifty million dollar fund specifically for early-stage Indian startups.1:06 They're betting on two things: a new wave of IPOs creating liquidity, and AI completely reshaping how deals get done.1:14 But here’s the counter-signal you need to watch: while the deep-tech money is flowing, the broader weekly startup funding was actually down fifty percent year-on-year last week.1:25 So it’s not a rising tide lifting all boats.1:27 It’s a series of targeted bets on very specific futures.1:31 Okay, let's go back to that semiconductor number, because it’s not just about the money.1:36 It’s about a fundamental shift in what India is building.1:40 For years, the story was software.1:42 Now, something different is happening.1:44 So, since 2022, chip startups have raised about two hundred and six million dollars.1:50 But sixty-two million of that came in just the first half of THIS year.1:54 That's the acceleration I'm talking about.1:57 And a big reason for it is the government's Design Linked Incentive program, or DLI.2:02 It’s basically de-risking the incredibly expensive early stages for these companies.2:07 As one VC, Vishesh Rajaram, put it, 2026 feels like an important point in the evolution.2:13 The government helps them get the tech right, and then private VCs like his are following with bigger and bigger cheques.2:20 But here's the catch, and this is the part most people will miss.2:24 The number of funding rounds is actually going down.2:28 We saw sixteen rounds in 2024, but only seven in the first half of this year.2:32 What does that tell you?2:34 It means the capital is concentrating.2:36 The money is getting smarter, and it’s flowing to the companies that are further along, the ones closer to a real product.2:44 It's getting harder for a brand-new team with just a good idea to get that first meeting.2:50 The bar is getting higher.2:51 And the government is about to raise it again.2:54 They're rolling out DLI 2.0.2:56 And the change is EVERYTHING.2:58 The old system gave you incentives for a "tape-out" — which is basically just finishing the design of a chip.3:04 The new system, DLI 2.0, links the incentives to actual customer DEPLOYMENT.3:09 You don't get paid for the blueprint anymore.3:12 You get paid when someone is using your silicon.3:15 Think about what that does.3:17 It forces founders to stop thinking like academics and start thinking like business builders from day one.3:23 Who is your customer?3:25 What problem does your chip solve for them?3:27 It’s a pivot from "can we build it?" to "can we sell it?".3:31 And that's a much harder, but much more valuable, question to answer.3:35 It’s why investors are saying this will speed up the path from first silicon to actual revenue, and probably lead to more strategic buyouts.3:44 This is the new ambition we're seeing.3:46 It’s not just about chip design anymore, either.3:49 It’s about photonics, power management chips, even the tools used to manufacture semiconductors.3:55 VCs are seeing founders who are willing to tackle what they call "harder, more ambitious problems." The game is no longer just about writing code on top of someone else's silicon.4:07 The new game is about making the silicon itself.
