0:00 The signature drum fill on "Go Your Own Way"—that iconic, tumbling sound—was a complete accident.0:06 It was.0:06 Mick Fleetwood kept messing up the take, and Lindsey Buckingham, uh, just told the engineer to loop the mistake.0:13 He looped a four-second screw-up and it became one of the most famous drum parts in rock history.0:20 Wow.0:20 Last week on "Behind the Boards," we talked about the untold stories of iconic albums, but this...0:26 this feels like a whole other level of accidental genius.0:30 Oh, it's the textbook case.0:32 The entire 'Rumours' album is basically a series of beautiful accidents born from absolute misery.0:38 They were in the Record Plant studio in Sausalito in 1976, and the band was just… atomizing.0:44 Right, this is the famous part.0:46 Everyone was breaking up with everyone.0:49 Exactly.0:49 John and Christine McVie had just divorced.0:52 They would only speak to each other about music.0:55 Christine was dating the band’s lighting director, and wrote "You Make Loving Fun" about him, forcing John to play a bassline on a love song about his ex-wife's new boyfriend.1:06 Oh my god.1:07 That is brutal.1:08 And that was the nicest relationship in the room.1:11 Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were in the middle of a screaming, door-slamming breakup.1:17 And Mick Fleetwood had just found out his wife was having an affair with his best friend.1:23 So how did they even make a record?1:25 I mean, how do you show up for work?1:27 They didn't really talk to each other.1:30 They talked through the songs.1:32 The control room was the only place they could communicate.1:36 You had Lindsey on one side of the glass, and Stevie on the other, and they would just sing these vicious lyrics at each other.1:44 He writes "Go Your Own Way," basically telling her to get lost.1:48 And she comes right back at him with "Dreams." She comes back with "Dreams," which is this sort of, you know, ethereal, witchy warning—"players only love you when they're playing." It was a conversation happening on two-inch tape, fueled by raw emotion and, frankly, a mountain of cocaine.2:07 The studio logs are insane.2:08 They spent weeks just trying to get a hi-hat sound right because nobody could agree on anything.2:15 So the tension is the story.2:16 But you said there were other accidents, like the drum fill.2:20 So many.2:21 The producer, Ken Caillat, found this old, broken tack piano in a back room at the studio.2:27 Some of the keys were dead, it was out of tune.2:30 He thought it sounded unique.2:32 Christine McVie sat down and wrote "Oh Daddy"—a song about Mick Fleetwood—on that broken piano.2:38 That's the sound you hear on the record.2:40 They just… used a broken instrument?2:43 They leaned into the flaws.2:44 The master tape itself was another one.2:47 They did so many takes, so many overdubs, that the tape physically started to wear out.2:53 It got thin.2:53 Caillat said you could almost see through it.2:56 That degradation, that loss of high-end frequency, is part of the album's warm, hazy sound.3:02 It’s the sound of a thing that is literally falling apart.3:06 So here’s the question I always have with stories like this.3:10 Did the album turn out great because of all the pain and chaos?3:14 Or did they make a great album in spite of it?3:17 You know, I think it’s both.3:19 The pain gave them the material.3:21 I mean, you don't write "The Chain" unless you feel like a relationship is being held together by one last, fraying link.3:29 But their musical genius, their sheer professionalism, is what allowed them to channel that chaos into something coherent and beautiful.3:37 So the conflict was the fuel, but they were still the ones driving the car.3:42 Precisely.3:43 Any other band would have imploded.3:45 They turned their diary entries into a forty-million-selling album.3:49 It's called 'Rumours' for a reason.3:52 They were all writing songs about each other, spreading rumors through the lyrics.3:57 The album isn't just a collection of songs; it’s a transcript of a five-way emotional breakdown.4:03 And we're all still listening to it.
