0:00 The Beatles recorded their first album, Please Please Me, in a single day for about four hundred pounds.0:07 Ten years later, Sgt.0:08 Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band cost them forty-thousand pounds and took five months.0:14 Right.0:15 And that gap, that explosion in time and money, is the whole story.0:19 Last week on Studio Legends we talked about iconic albums, but this is the record that basically invented the modern concept of the studio album.0:30 So what happened?0:31 They just decided to stop being a band that plays live and become...0:36 what, studio scientists?0:37 That’s EXACTLY what happened.0:39 They were exhausted from touring.0:42 The screaming was so loud they couldn't even hear themselves play.0:46 So Paul McCartney had this idea on a flight back from Nairobi...0:51 what if we created a fake band?0:53 An alter-ego.0:54 Sgt.0:54 Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.0:56 Yep.0:57 The name came from a joke about salt and pepper shakers.1:01 But the idea was serious.1:02 Paul said the album itself could "go on tour." This freed them.1:07 They no longer had to write songs they could reproduce on stage.1:11 The studio became, in producer George Martin's words, a "new canvas." Okay, but what does "painting with sound" actually mean in 1967?1:21 They're still working with, what, four-track tape machines?1:25 It sounds so primitive.1:26 It was!1:27 And that’s where the genius of engineer Geoff Emerick comes in.1:31 Take a song like John Lennon’s "Good Morning, Good Morning." To get all the animal sounds and the horns in there, they had to keep bouncing tracks from one tape machine to another.1:44 Emerick said the final track sounds a little harsh because the tape was physically wearing out from being copied so many times.1:53 Wow.1:53 So the sound of the song is literally the sound of them pushing the technology to its breaking point.2:00 Precisely.2:01 And then there's the stuff they just invented on the spot.2:05 John Lennon HATED singing the same vocal line twice to double it.2:10 So engineer Ken Townsend invented a new technique just for him.2:14 Wait—what?2:15 He called it Artificial Double Tracking, or ADT.2:18 It used tape delay to create a second vocal track electronically.2:23 It was invented to save John some time, and it became a signature sound of the album and, uh, pretty much the entire industry for decades after.2:33 This is where we see that pattern, right?2:36 A specific, annoying problem leads to a massive, industry-changing innovation.2:41 It’s not some grand strategy.2:43 It never is.2:44 The best stuff is a workaround.2:46 Like the circus sounds on "Being for the Benefit of Mr.2:50 Kite!" John wanted to "smell the sawdust." So George Martin took recordings of old steam organs, literally chopped the tape into little pieces with scissors, threw them in the air, and spliced them back together randomly.3:06 It's an early, analog form of sampling.3:08 That’s insane.3:09 He just...3:10 threw them in the air?3:12 He did!3:12 But the ultimate example of this, the peak of their creative chaos, has to be the crescendo in "A Day in the Life." Oh, that terrifying orchestral swell.3:23 That feels so composed, so deliberate.3:25 It was the opposite.3:27 They brought in a 40-piece orchestra, and Paul and George Martin basically told them: you have 24 bars.3:34 Start on the lowest note your instrument can play, and end on the highest.3:39 Go.3:40 That was the entire instruction?3:42 That was it.3:43 No sheet music.3:44 Just a command to create sonic anarchy.3:46 What you hear is the sound of forty classically trained musicians having the time of their lives, unleashed.3:54 It was an accident that became one of the most iconic moments in pop music.3:59 So was it even a concept album?4:01 John Lennon famously said his songs had nothing to do with some fake band.4:07 And he was right.4:08 "A Day in the Life" isn't about Sgt.4:10 Pepper.4:11 Neither is "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." The "concept" was more like a permission slip.4:17 It was a frame that let them get weird.4:20 It told the world: we're not just the four mop-tops anymore.4:24 It's the frame, not the picture.4:26 Exactly.4:27 The real legacy of Sgt.4:29 Pepper isn't the story of a fictional band.4:32 It’s the story of how a real band, in a room with a brilliant producer, turned the recording studio from a place you document music into an instrument you play.4:43 And they had FUN doing it.4:45 Martin called those sessions "the happy days before strife set in." It was pure, joyful discovery.
