0:00 Pink Floyd’s album The Dark Side of the Moon spent an unprecedented 937 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart.0:07 Nine hundred and thirty-seven.0:09 It’s a number you can’t even really comprehend.0:12 That’s almost eighteen years.0:14 Right?0:14 And last week, on 'Behind the Glass,' we talked about those studio moments—the fights, the accidents, the flashes of genius—that can make or break a record.0:25 I feel like Dark Side is the ultimate case study for all of it.0:30 Oh, it’s the blueprint.0:31 But you have to remember what came before it.0:34 This is late 1971.0:35 The band is coming off albums like Atom Heart Mother, which they were… let's say, not entirely happy with.0:43 They felt they were drifting.0:45 So what changed?0:46 A meeting.0:47 November 1971, at Nick Mason’s house in Camden.0:50 The four of them—Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright—sat down and basically said, “What are we doing?” They agreed the next thing had to be different.1:02 More focused.1:03 It had to be about something.1:05 And that ‘something’ became… well, everything.1:08 Life, death, money, madness.1:10 Exactly.1:10 Roger Waters was really stepping up as the lyricist, and he was channeling these huge themes.1:17 He was thinking about greed, mortality, and especially the mental decline of their former bandmate, Syd Barrett.1:24 When he wrote the line "the lunatic is on the grass," he was picturing Syd, back in Cambridge.1:31 So they have this grand concept.1:33 How do you even begin to capture that on tape in 1972?1:37 Well, first you go to Abbey Road Studios.1:40 And you get very, very lucky with technology.1:43 Abbey Road had just installed this brand new Studer A80 16-track tape machine.1:48 It was one of the first in the UK.1:51 Sixteen tracks.1:52 That must have felt like science fiction.1:54 It was a total game-changer.1:56 And they had the perfect person to run it: a young engineer named Alan Parsons, who had worked on the Beatles’ Abbey Road and Let It Be.2:06 He was the technical wizard who could help them build the soundscape they were imagining.2:12 And that soundscape was so much more than just guitars and drums.2:16 It was… cinematic.2:18 Totally.2:18 That’s the 16-track at work.2:20 It let them layer everything.2:22 They were running tape loops, creating these elaborate sound effects.2:27 And then Roger had this idea—he started pulling people aside in the studio, just staff and other random visitors, and asking them these probing questions on a microphone.2:39 What kind of questions?2:40 Things like, "When did you last hit someone?" and "Do you fear death?" He even interviewed Paul McCartney, who was recording nearby.2:49 Wait—Paul McCartney is on The Dark Side of the Moon?2:53 He was supposed to be!2:54 But they cut him.2:55 Roger said "he was trying to be funny, which wasn't what we wanted at all." It just shows how laser-focused they were on the tone.3:04 Okay, but not everything was that meticulously planned, right?3:09 I mean, there had to be some spontaneous magic.3:12 Oh, the best moment of the entire album was pure, unplanned magic.3:17 "The Great Gig in the Sky." They had this beautiful piano piece by Richard Wright, but it needed something more.3:24 So Alan Parsons suggested bringing in a session vocalist he knew named Clare Torry.3:30 I know that voice.3:31 It’s… unearthly.3:32 Right?3:33 So Clare comes in on a Sunday night, January 21st, 1973.3:37 They basically tell her, "There are no lyrics.3:40 Don't sing any words.3:41 Just… improvise.3:42 Think about death and horror." She did two or three takes of this wordless, emotional wail, and that was it.3:50 She created one of the most iconic vocal performances in rock history, completely on the spot.3:56 Wow.3:56 So when they finally put it all together and listened back to the finished album for the first time, what was that like?4:05 David Gilmour said it was a moment of "great joy and satisfaction." They knew they had nailed it.4:11 And, you know, 45 million copies sold later, I think it’s safe to say the world agreed.4:17 But there's an irony there, isn't there?4:20 An album that dives so deep into themes of alienation and the pressures of modern life ends up bringing them more fame and pressure than they could ever have imagined.4:32 That’s the pattern, right?4:34 It’s the story of so many great bands.4:36 The success of Dark Side was immense, but it was also the thing that started to really amplify the cracks in the band, especially Roger Waters's growing alienation from the whole spectacle.4:49 In a way, the album that defined them was also the beginning of their long, slow unraveling.
