0:00 Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh’s Cold War action-comedy Mayday just dropped on Apple TV+ today, September fourth.0:07 Now, last week we talked about finding the hidden gems in the streaming jungle, but this week, the platforms are making it...0:15 well, not exactly easy, but they are definitely making it LOUD.0:19 So here's the quick sweep of what's making all that noise.0:23 On Netflix, it’s a tale of two strategies: they launched season two of the crime-comedy The Gentlemen yesterday, doubling down on a known hit.0:32 But they also dropped a new unscripted series, Earle Meets World, banking on reality intrigue.0:38 Over at HBO Max, they're playing a similar game.0:42 Today you get Fuze, a big-budget British thriller with Aaron Taylor-Johnson about a WWII bomb and a bank heist.0:49 But they also just premiered an indie horror film called Backrooms, and later this month they've got Youth, a new series from the brilliant Sharon Horgan.0:59 It’s a real mix.1:00 Hulu is bringing back Glen Powell for season two of the sports comedy Chad Powers.1:05 And Paramount+ is getting into the documentary game with The Program: Texas Tech.1:10 They're also getting ready to drop the final season of Colin From Accounts and an animated series based on the video game Golden Axe later in September.1:20 And speaking of video games, Square Enix just released the entire 66-track soundtrack for Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail.1:28 So you can literally just listen to the game now.1:31 It's a lot.1:32 So what's the thread connecting a Ryan Reynolds blockbuster, a video game soundtrack, and the second season of a Guy Ritchie spinoff?1:41 It’s the sound of streaming platforms trying to manufacture an EVENT.1:45 Think about it.1:46 For years, the promise of streaming was the library.1:49 Everything, always available.1:51 But now, with everyone having a library, that’s not enough.1:55 You have to create moments.1:57 You have to give people a reason to talk about YOU, right now, this weekend.2:02 So you get these two parallel tracks.2:04 On one track, you have the guaranteed wins, the franchise extensions — The Gentlemen season two, Chad Powers season two.2:12 These are for the built-in audience.2:14 They keep subscribers from churning.2:17 But the other track...2:18 that's where they're trying to build new events from scratch.2:22 Apple isn't just releasing a movie; they're releasing a Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh buddy-spy movie that plays on their real-life friendship.2:32 That’s not just content, that’s a marketing campaign ready to go.2:36 HBO Max isn't just dropping a thriller; they’re dropping a David Mackenzie film with Aaron Taylor-Johnson that feels like a trip to the cinema.2:45 Where have we seen this before?2:47 It’s the old playbook of appointment television, just repackaged.2:52 Remember rushing home to watch a specific show on a specific night, because if you didn't, you'd be out of the loop the next day at work?3:00 They're trying to recreate that exact feeling.3:03 The difference, of course, is that the show isn't going anywhere.3:08 Mayday will still be on Apple TV+ next month.3:11 But the conversation about it might be gone.3:13 They're trying to build urgency where, technically, there is NONE.3:18 And the hyper-niche stuff, like the Dawntrail soundtrack?3:21 That's the other side of the same coin.3:24 It’s about super-serving a very specific, very loud fanbase, knowing they will evangelize for you and make it feel like an event within their own community.3:34 So what does it mean for you, trying to figure out what to watch on a Friday night?3:40 It means you have to get good at separating the manufactured hype from the actual quality.3:45 My take?3:46 Fuze on HBO Max looks like a genuinely tense, well-crafted thriller worth your time.3:51 And Sharon Horgan's Youth is a must-watch later this month just based on her track record alone.3:58 But for the big, loud event movies?4:00 You have to ask yourself if you’re excited about the movie, or just excited because you’ve been told to be.4:07 This week sets up the biggest test of that model yet: the Emmy Awards are on September fourteenth.4:13 That’s the ultimate industry-created event.4:16 And it’ll be telling to see if the shows that get the awards are the same ones the platforms have been spending all this money to turn into events.4:26 The platforms aren't just building a library anymore.4:29 They're trying to build your calendar.
