0:00 A horror film on Peacock just grossed over four hundred and fifty-eight million dollars at the box office, officially making more money than The Exorcist.0:10 Last week we talked about that film, Obsession, becoming Peacock’s biggest hit — but the full story of how it got there is even wilder, and it tells you everything about the state of movies right now.0:23 Okay, so while Peacock celebrates, what's everyone else doing?0:27 Netflix dropped two big ones.0:29 First is Enola Holmes 3, which is exactly the smart, charming adventure you expect.0:35 It's a definite watch.0:36 But then there's Will Ferrell’s new drama, The Hawk.0:40 And look, I love Ferrell, but the consensus is that this one...0:44 doesn't quite land the transition from comedy to serious drama.0:48 You can probably skip it unless you're a die-hard fan.0:51 Over on Prime Video, the big news is that Project Hail Mary is finally available.0:57 Ryan Gosling in a big-budget, high-concept sci-fi adventure.1:01 It debuted on MGM+ first, but now it's on Prime for everyone.1:05 This is an absolute MUST-SEE.1:07 They also added a thriller called The Devil’s Mouth, but it’s pretty quiet.1:12 Your time is better spent with Gosling saving the cosmos.1:16 Apple TV+ is playing the nostalgia card with a new Snoopy special, which is just pure comfort food television.1:23 They also dropped the eighth episode of their thriller series Cape Fear, which continues to be a solid slow-burn for those who are already invested.1:33 And for the franchise fans, Paramount+ has Season Four of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds which, honestly, is probably the best Trek on TV right now.1:43 But let's go back to Obsession.1:45 Because this isn't just another hit.1:47 This is a pattern we haven't really seen before in this shape.1:51 You remember when a movie had a theatrical window?1:54 A clean ninety days, then it would trickle down to video, then cable.1:59 That's GONE.2:00 Obsession came out in May, and its box office...2:03 it grew.2:04 Week over week.2:05 The word-of-mouth was so strong it started behaving like a classic from the seventies, not a modern horror flick that's supposed to burn out in ten days.2:15 And here's the turn.2:16 While it was still climbing in theaters, it was also topping the video-on-demand charts.2:22 Then, it hits Peacock and becomes the number one streaming title in the country.2:27 It’s not a theatrical movie that became a streaming hit.2:31 It was BOTH.2:32 At the same time.2:33 It’s like if A Quiet Place had been a Netflix Original from day one, but also made half a billion dollars in cinemas.2:41 The model doesn't just break the rules; it proves the rules were imaginary all along.2:46 So what does it all add up to?2:48 You have this ferocious, genuinely scary thriller that created a cultural feedback loop.2:54 People saw it in theaters, told their friends, who then watched it at home, who then told their friends to go see it in a theater for the full experience.3:04 It's a monster that feeds itself.3:07 And then, on the complete opposite end of the spectrum this week, you have the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, also on Peacock.3:15 No complex release strategy here.3:17 Just pure, uncut nostalgia.3:19 It’s colorful, it’s for the whole family, and it does exactly what you expect it to do.3:24 It’s the Illumination playbook, perfected.3:27 It’s safe, it’s reliable, and it’s a guaranteed hit.3:31 It’s the absolute antithesis of Obsession's risky, chaotic, lightning-in-a-bottle success.3:37 So when you’re scrolling this weekend, you’re not just looking at a list of titles.3:42 You're looking at two completely different, and completely successful, strategies for capturing your attention.3:49 One is the carefully engineered IP machine, humming along perfectly with Mario.3:55 The other is the unpredictable, word-of-mouth cultural event that is Obsession.4:00 The question isn't just which one you'll watch.4:03 It's which model is actually the future of Hollywood.4:07 This week, the answer is somehow...4:09 both.4:09 The streaming war isn't one war anymore; it's a dozen different campaigns fought on a dozen different fronts.
