0:00 The phrase "I have a dream" doesn't appear anywhere in the official, typed-out speech Martin Luther King Jr.0:08 was supposed to give on August 28th, 1963.0:11 Not a single time.0:12 Last week, we talked about the drama happening just offstage at great speeches, and, uh, there's maybe no greater example of that than this one.0:23 The script is only half the story.0:26 So take us there.0:27 What did it feel like on the National Mall that day?0:31 Oh, it was hot.0:32 A classic, sticky Washington D.C.0:35 August day.0:35 But the mood...0:37 it was electric.0:38 You had a quarter of a million people—black, white, young, old—all packed between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.0:48 There was singing.0:49 But there was also, you know, a real tension.0:53 Everyone knew the stakes.0:54 What were the stakes, exactly?0:57 Beyond just the march itself.0:59 The Civil Rights Act was stalled in Congress.1:02 President Kennedy was watching, waiting to see if this whole thing would descend into chaos, which would have killed the bill for good.1:13 And even among the leaders, there was disagreement.1:16 John Lewis—a hero—had his original speech censored just hours before because it was considered too inflammatory.1:25 So King is the last speaker of a long, hot day, and he's got all that pressure on his shoulders.1:32 Immense pressure.1:33 He was exhausted.1:35 He'd been up the night before at the Willard Hotel with his advisors, debating the text.1:41 He was delivering a speech he wasn't even completely settled on, to a tired crowd, with the entire political future of the movement hanging in the balance.1:53 And how did it start?1:55 When he first stepped up to the podium.1:58 It started...1:59 fine.1:59 He was a great orator, so "fine" for him is brilliant for anyone else.2:04 But he was reading.2:06 You could see it.2:07 He was sticking to the script, talking about the "promissory note" and the "bad check" America had given Black citizens.2:16 It was powerful, it was intellectual, but the crowd was just...2:21 listening.2:22 They weren't soaring.2:23 Okay, so here's the moment.2:25 What happened?2:26 What made it turn?2:28 He was winding down the prepared remarks.2:31 You could feel he was about to wrap it up with a final, scripted point.2:36 And then, from just off to the side of the stage, the gospel singer Mahalia Jackson—who had sung earlier—shouts out.2:45 She just...2:46 yells at him?2:47 Mid-speech?2:48 She yells, "Tell 'em about the dream, Martin!2:51 Tell 'em about the dream!" She'd heard him use the "dream" riff in other smaller sermons before.2:58 It was a theme he'd been working on.3:01 Wow.3:02 And he heard her?3:03 He heard her.3:04 And in that instant...3:05 everything changed.3:07 You saw him physically shift.3:09 He looked up from his text.3:11 He pushed the papers to the side of the lectern.3:15 Aides backstage supposedly said, "he's off-book now." And that’s when it happens.3:21 That's when the preacher takes over from the academic.3:25 His voice changes.3:26 The rhythm becomes a sermon.3:29 He grips the podium and he just...3:31 goes.3:31 "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up..." And with every line, the crowd got louder and louder.3:40 It wasn't just a speech anymore.3:42 It was a shared testimony.3:44 It was like lightning had been caught in a bottle.3:48 You knew, right there, that the world was changing.3:52 It's that pattern we see sometimes, isn't it?3:55 Where the plan is good, but the improvised moment is what becomes legendary.4:01 It's the broken play in football that ends in a touchdown.4:06 Exactly.4:06 The plan was the "bad check." That was the intellectual argument.4:11 But the dream...4:12 um, the dream was the soul.4:14 And you needed both.4:16 But it was the soul that people remembered.4:19 When he finished, there was this split second of stunned silence, and then just a roar.4:26 Not just applause.4:27 A physical wave of sound.4:29 It’s incredible to think that a moment of such historical weight came down to an unscripted pivot.4:36 A single sentence shouted from the side.4:39 It is.4:40 It shows you that history isn't always made by a committee or a prepared statement.4:46 Sometimes, it's made when one person has the courage to leave the script behind and just speak from the heart.
