0:00 The featured speaker of the day, a man named Edward Everett, spoke for two hours.0:06 Two.0:06 Solid.0:07 Hours.0:07 Can you even imagine?0:09 And honestly, that’s what everyone came for.0:13 Last week on "Behind the Podium" we talked about how a speaker has to own the moment, but on November nineteenth, 1863, the man we remember wasn't even the main event.0:26 He was the afterthought.0:28 Okay, so take us there.0:30 We're standing just off the platform in Gettysburg.0:34 What does it feel like?0:36 What do you smell?0:38 It's cold.0:38 It's a damp, raw November chill that gets into your bones.0:43 The ground is still torn up from the battle just four months earlier, so there’s this smell of churned mud, wet wool coats, and… something else.0:55 The scent of disinfectant, of decay, that hasn't quite left the air.1:00 Wow.1:01 So the battlefield is literally the stage.1:04 It IS the stage.1:06 And the crowd, maybe fifteen thousand people, they aren't festive.1:11 They're somber.1:12 They're shuffling, coughing.1:14 Many of them are here looking for a son's or a husband's grave.1:20 They're here for a dedication, a funeral, not a political rally.1:25 And then you see Abraham Lincoln.1:27 What does he look like?1:29 In my head, he's always this towering, confident figure.1:34 Not that day.1:35 He looks sick.1:36 Genuinely ill.1:37 His face is pale, almost ashen.1:40 We know now he was likely in the early stages of smallpox.1:44 He arrived the night before, he's tired, and he seems… distracted.1:50 He’s not the main attraction, and he knows it.1:54 He’s just there to offer a "few appropriate remarks." So Everett gives this two-hour epic, a classical Greek-style oration, detailing the entire battle.2:06 The crowd must have been exhausted.2:09 Exhausted.2:10 Cold.2:10 Restless.2:11 Everett finishes to polite, sustained applause.2:15 It was a marathon.2:16 Then, after a hymn, the crowd starts to shift.2:20 People are thinking about heading home.2:23 And then Lincoln gets up.2:25 And the mood changes?2:27 Um, not really.2:28 He kinda unfolds himself—he's so tall and awkward.2:32 He puts on these steel-rimmed spectacles, pulls two pages from his coat pocket, and he begins to speak.2:40 His voice isn't the deep baritone we imagine.2:44 It’s higher, reedy, with this Kentucky accent.2:48 "Four score and seven years ago..." Exactly.2:51 And he's… done.2:53 In about two minutes.2:54 Ten sentences.2:56 The whole thing is 272 words.2:58 And the first reaction is just… silence.3:01 Wait—complete silence?3:03 No applause?3:04 Utter confusion.3:05 A photographer who was setting up his cumbersome equipment to take the president's picture was still getting ready when Lincoln sat down.3:16 People looked at each other.3:19 Was that it?3:20 Did he get cut short?3:21 There was some scattered, confused applause, but mostly just… bafflement.3:27 So the most famous speech in American history landed like a dud.3:32 A total dud!3:33 Lincoln himself thought so.3:36 He leaned over to his bodyguard and said something like, "That speech won't scour.3:42 It is a flat failure." He was genuinely dismayed.3:46 So how did it become… THE Gettysburg Address?3:50 It’s a case where the medium saved the message.3:54 It was too short, too dense, too philosophically radical for people to process with their ears in real time.4:03 It’s like hearing a brilliant, complicated new song for the first time—you don't catch it all.4:10 But then the newspapers printed it.4:13 Ah.4:13 So people could read it.4:15 They could read it.4:17 They could see the structure, the poetry.4:20 The ten sentences that redefined the entire purpose of the war—from preserving the Union to a "new birth of freedom." Edward Everett, the two-hour guy, wrote to Lincoln the next day and said, "I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes." Wow.4:48 So even the main act knew he'd been upstaged, even if the crowd didn't.4:53 He knew instantly.4:55 It's a reminder that sometimes, the true impact of a moment isn't felt in the moment itself.5:02 It has to echo.5:04 That quiet, awkward man with the high voice, feeling sick on a cold day, didn't deliver a speech for the fifteen thousand people there.5:15 He delivered it for the next two hundred years.
