0:00 The most famous speech of the twentieth century was supposed to be called "Normalcy—Never Again." That's right.0:07 It was typed out, sitting right there on the podium.0:11 A solid, political speech.0:12 But not a sermon.0:14 Not yet.0:14 Last week on Behind the Podium, we talked about what happens just offstage.0:19 This feels like the ultimate example of that.0:22 It's August 28th, 1963.0:24 What does it feel like standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial?0:29 It's hot.0:29 Sweltering.0:30 And the air is just thick with energy.0:32 You have a quarter of a million people stretched out in front of you.0:37 A sea of faces.0:38 You can feel the weight of their hope.0:41 But you can also feel the weight of the nation's fear.0:44 What kind of fear?0:46 The fear of violence.0:47 The Kennedy administration was terrified this march would erupt.0:52 The city was on lockdown.0:53 But looking out, you didn't see a mob.0:56 You saw families.0:57 You heard freedom songs.0:59 It was a picnic, a revival, and a revolution all at once.1:02 And in the middle of all this is Martin Luther King Jr., about to give the final speech of the day.1:09 And he’s exhausted.1:11 He and his advisors, men like Clarence B.1:13 Jones, were up all night in the hotel, arguing over words, shaping the message.1:19 Jones knew the stakes.1:20 He said the goal of their opponents was to "bankrupt and decapitate" the movement.1:26 This speech had to work.1:27 So King steps up to the microphone with this "Normalcy—Never Again" script...1:33 And he starts delivering it.1:35 It's a good speech.1:36 He's hitting all the right notes, referencing the Constitution, the Emancipation Proclamation.1:42 The crowd is with him.1:44 But it's not...1:45 transcendent.1:46 It's not lifting off.1:47 You can feel it from the side of the stage.1:50 It’s solid ground, but he needs to fly.1:53 And then something happens.1:55 And then something happens.1:56 From somewhere behind him, the gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, his friend, shouts out.2:02 Her voice just cuts through everything.2:05 "Tell 'em about the dream, Martin!" Just like that.2:08 Wait—from the crowd?2:10 Not even the crowd.2:11 She was on the stage with the other dignitaries.2:14 She felt what everyone was feeling.2:17 That he needed to leave the page behind.2:19 And he hears her.2:21 What does he do?2:22 He looks up from his text.2:23 He physically pushes the papers aside.2:26 And Clarence B.2:27 Jones, who helped write those very words, turns to the person next to him and says, "These people don't know it, but they're about to go to church." Wow.2:37 And he just launches into it.2:39 "I have a dream..." And with every repetition, the energy from that crowd of 250,000 people just comes rushing back at him.2:48 It becomes a current.2:49 A call and response on a national scale.2:52 He wasn't giving a speech anymore.2:54 He was testifying.2:55 It’s like a quarterback at the Super Bowl, seeing the defense shift, and just abandoning the playbook at the line of scrimmage.3:04 That's exactly it.3:05 He called an audible on history.3:08 But the difference is, if the quarterback's play fails, you lose a game.3:12 The stakes here were the soul of the country.3:16 This wasn't just improvisation; it was channeling years of pain and hope into one perfect, spontaneous moment.3:23 So when he finishes, when that final "Free at last!" rings out...3:27 what's the feeling?3:29 Did you know?3:30 Oh, you knew.3:30 You didn't just know.3:32 You felt it in your bones.3:34 The sound was deafening.3:35 People were weeping.3:37 Strangers hugging.3:38 For sixteen minutes, a quarter of a million people, and the millions more watching on television, shared the exact same hope.3:46 The world had just tilted on its axis.3:49 And it happened because one man was brave enough to put down his script and listen to a friend.
