0:00 On June fifth, 1989, a man carrying two shopping bags stepped in front of a column of Type 59 tanks on the Avenue of Eternal Peace.0:09 And in that moment, an accidental icon was created.0:13 Last week on "Behind the Shutter," we talked about how one frame can define an entire historical event.0:20 This is probably the single greatest example of that in the twentieth century.0:26 Everyone knows the image.0:28 But almost no one knows the story.0:30 So let's start there.0:32 Who took the picture?0:33 Because I feel like I've seen slightly different versions of it.0:38 You have.0:39 And that's the first crucial detail.0:41 There wasn't just one photographer.0:44 At least four different still photographers and a few camera crews captured the event, all from the balconies of the Beijing Hotel, which overlooked the square.0:56 They were all in the same hotel?0:58 Right.0:58 The crackdown had happened the day before.1:02 The area was not safe.1:03 The hotel was one of the only vantage points.1:06 The most famous shot, the one we all see, was taken by Jeff Widener for the Associated Press.1:13 He was shooting with a 400-millimeter lens.1:16 So he was pretty far away.1:18 Hundreds of yards away.1:20 He was injured, had the flu, and was running out of film.1:24 A tourist actually gave him a roll of film that he used to get the shot.1:29 Another version, a wider one, was taken by Stuart Franklin for Magnum Photos.1:35 He had to smuggle his film out in a box of tea to get it past the security police.1:41 Wow.1:41 So the act of just getting the photo was a story in itself.1:46 It always is.1:47 But the real story is what happened in the street.1:50 The man doesn't just stand there.1:53 The lead tank stops.1:54 It tries to go around him.1:56 He sidesteps, blocking it again.1:58 This happens two, three times.2:01 It’s a dance.2:02 A terrifying, silent dance between a man with his groceries and a fifty-ton tank.2:07 And the tank commander just… stops.2:10 They don't run him over.2:12 They don't.2:13 The commander even cuts the engine.2:15 And that's where the photograph ends.2:18 But the film footage shows what happened next.2:21 Wait—what happened next?2:23 The man climbs up onto the hull of the lead tank.2:27 He walks right up to the commander's hatch and seems to have a short conversation.2:33 He climbed ON the tank?2:34 I never knew that.2:36 We never see that part.2:37 Almost nobody does.2:39 You can't hear what he's saying, of course.2:42 But he's talking to the soldier inside.2:45 After a moment, he climbs down.2:47 And then, two figures in blue rush in from the side of the road and pull him away into the crowd.2:54 And he's gone.2:55 Just… pulled away?2:56 By who?2:57 Nobody knows.2:58 Were they government agents arresting him?3:01 Or were they concerned citizens trying to save his life?3:05 We will likely never know.3:07 And we will almost certainly never know his name.3:10 He is just "Tank Man." Does that anonymity change the power of the image?3:16 I feel like it makes it stronger.3:18 It makes it universal.3:20 This is where we see a pattern.3:22 When a hero is anonymous, they become an avatar for anyone.3:26 He isn't a specific dissident with a name and a history.3:30 He is simply a person, any person, standing up to absolute power.3:35 The shopping bags are the key.3:37 They signal that he's just an ordinary man.3:41 He could have been on his way home from the market.3:44 It makes the courage feel accessible, in a way.3:48 Not something for saints or leaders, but for… us.3:51 Exactly.3:52 The photo asks a question that a picture of a famous leader never could.3:57 It asks, "What would you do?" He was right.4:00 He was also, in ways we can't even fathom, completely erased from the official record inside his own country.4:08 The photograph is his only memorial.4:11 So the final image isn't just about defiance.4:14 It’s about memory.4:16 It's about the fight over memory.4:18 The image exists as a profound act of public courage, but the man himself is a ghost.4:24 He exists everywhere, and he exists nowhere at all.4:28 And that’s the question that hangs over every single frame taken that day.4:33 Where did he go?
