0:00 Within days of one photograph being published in March 1936, twenty-thousand pounds of food were sent to a starving pea-pickers’ camp in Nipomo, California.0:11 Twenty-thousand pounds?0:13 From one picture?0:14 From one picture.0:15 It’s exactly what we talked about last week on "Behind the Shutter"—how a single image can move the world, but the story it tells is never the whole story.0:26 This one is maybe the most famous example of all.0:30 You're talking about Migrant Mother.0:32 The woman with the worried eyes, her children hiding their faces in her shoulders.0:38 That’s the one.0:39 The photographer was Dorothea Lange.0:42 She was working for the Farm Security Administration, or FSA—a New Deal agency basically tasked with documenting the absolute poverty of the Great Depression.0:54 So her job was to go out and find these scenes of hardship.0:58 Right.0:58 And on this day in March 1936, she was driving home from a long trip, and she passed a sign for this pea-pickers’ camp.1:07 She actually drove twenty miles past it before her conscience got the better of her.1:13 She turned the car around.1:15 And in that camp, she finds the woman who would become the face of an era.1:20 Who was she?1:21 Her name was Florence Owens Thompson.1:24 She was thirty-two years old, a widowed mother of seven, and she was Cherokee.1:30 She and her family were on their way to the lettuce fields to find work when their car broke down, stranding them at this camp.1:39 So Lange just walks up to her?1:41 With a camera?1:42 That feels...1:43 intrusive.1:44 It was.1:44 Lange herself said she was drawn to this "hungry and desperate mother" like a magnet.1:50 The whole encounter lasted maybe ten minutes.1:54 She took six photos in total.1:56 Only six?1:56 Wow.1:57 She started far away and moved closer with each shot, circling her.2:02 For the final, most famous frame, she actually did some directing.2:06 She asked Florence to bring her hand up to her chin.2:10 She had the two children turn away from the camera, so you can't see their faces.2:16 Hold on—she posed her?2:18 I always thought it was a completely candid moment.2:21 A snapshot of despair.2:23 And that’s the complicated truth of it.2:26 It’s a document, but it’s also an arranged composition.2:30 It gets even more complex.2:32 Lange’s field notes, which were published alongside the photo, said the family had "sold the tires from her car to buy food." Which is just the most devastating detail.2:44 The ultimate sign of having absolutely nothing left.2:48 Exactly.2:48 It's the detail that makes the story unforgettable.2:52 The only problem is, it might not be true.2:55 Years later, Florence’s son, Troy, said, "There's no way we sold our tires, because we didn't have any to sell." He figured Lange just got their story mixed up with someone else’s.3:08 So the detail that made the photo an icon wasn't even part of her actual story.3:14 What did Florence think about all this?3:17 She didn't even know the photo was taken, let alone published, until much later.3:22 She and her family got the car fixed and moved on, continuing to work as migrants.3:28 She wasn't publicly identified until 1978.3:31 And when she was, she said she felt exploited by the image.3:36 She was ashamed of it.3:37 She never made a single penny from a photograph that has been reproduced millions of times.3:44 That's just crushing.3:46 The world gets this powerful symbol of resilience, but the actual person feels like her dignity was taken.3:53 It is.3:54 After she was identified, she received thousands of letters and donations to help with her medical bills near the end of her life.4:03 She lived to be eighty, passing away in 1983.4:06 President Reagan even noted her passing, saying it represented "the loss of an America." So she goes from a nameless face of poverty to a national symbol.4:18 But the real Florence Owens Thompson, the woman who was just trying to get her kids to the next town...4:25 she’s sort of lost in the middle of it all.4:28 Completely.4:29 The photograph is in the public domain.4:32 It’s on postage stamps, in museums, in every history book.4:36 It did its job—it shocked the public and brought aid.4:40 But it leaves you with this question that has no easy answer: how much truth is a photographer allowed to bend to tell a larger one?
