0:00 By the time twenty thousand pounds of food aid arrived at the migrant camp in Nipomo, California, the woman whose face had prompted the donation was already gone.0:13 Yeah.0:13 She'd moved on.0:14 That's the part of the Migrant Mother story that just… gets lost.0:19 She never saw a bit of that food.0:22 Last week we talked about the untold stories behind iconic photos, and this one from 1936 has to be one of the most famous, and maybe most misunderstood, of ALL time.0:35 It is.0:36 And it’s really a story about a ten-minute encounter that changed everything for the country, and almost nothing for the woman in the frame.0:47 So set the scene for me.0:49 This is Dorothea Lange, the photographer.0:53 Right.0:53 She's working for the government—the Farm Security Administration.0:58 Her job is to document the human cost of the Great Depression.1:03 It's March 1936, she's been on the road for a month, and she's driving home, exhausted.1:10 Ready to be done.1:12 Totally.1:12 But she passes this crude sign that just says "Pea-Pickers Camp." And she tries to ignore it.1:20 She drives on for twenty miles.1:22 But something, uh, gnaws at her.1:25 She later said she felt like she was drawn back by a magnet.1:30 So she makes a U-turn.1:32 Wow.1:32 So what did she find when she got there?1:35 Just desperation.1:36 She finds this woman, Florence Owens Thompson, in a shabby lean-to tent.1:42 Florence is only thirty-two years old.1:45 A widow.1:46 And she has seven children huddled around her.1:50 The pea crop had failed because of freezing rain, so there was no work, no money, no food.1:57 Thirty-two.1:58 She looks so much older in the photograph.2:01 The stress, the sun, the worry.2:04 It ages you.2:05 Lange said they were surviving on frozen vegetables they could scavenge from the fields, and whatever small birds the kids managed to kill.2:16 Just before Lange arrived, Florence had sold the tires from her car just to buy a little food.2:23 So Lange just walks up to this scene with her camera?2:28 That feels so… intrusive.2:30 You know, Lange described it differently.2:33 She said there was a "sort of equality about it." She didn't ask Florence her name, just her situation.2:41 She took five photographs in about ten minutes.2:45 Only five?2:46 Only five.2:47 With each one, she moved closer.2:49 The first shot is wider, you can see more of the tent, the poverty.2:55 But then she pushes in, closer and closer, until she gets that final frame.3:01 The one we all know.3:02 Where her hand is to her chin, and the kids are turned away, hiding their faces in her shoulders.3:10 Exactly.3:11 And that was a deliberate choice.3:14 By hiding their faces, Lange makes them everybody's children.3:19 And by focusing on Florence’s face—that expression of worry and dignity—she becomes a universal mother.3:27 She becomes an icon.3:28 And the photo gets published almost immediately.3:32 Instantly.3:33 The San Francisco News runs it with a story about thousands of starving workers.3:40 The public is horrified.3:41 And the government, uh, actually responds.3:45 They ship 20,000 pounds of food to the camp in Nipomo.3:49 It’s this massive, tangible victory for documentary photography.3:54 It proves a picture can create REAL change.3:58 Okay, but here’s the turn—as you said, Florence wasn't there to receive it.4:04 She was gone.4:05 By the time the aid trucks rolled in, she and her family were already on the road again, looking for the next bit of work.4:15 And for the next forty years, she was completely anonymous.4:20 The most famous face of the Depression, and no one knew her name.4:25 So how did we finally find out who she was?4:28 A reporter tracked her down in 1978.4:31 And it turns out her feelings about the photo were… complicated.4:36 She was resentful.4:38 Ohhh, I can see that.4:39 Yeah.4:40 She felt like it stereotyped her.4:43 She was a survivor, you know?4:45 She wasn't a helpless victim.4:47 She hated that image of her in a moment of pure desperation.4:52 She even wrote a letter to a magazine in the fifties, saying if they published it again, she and her daughters would be "forced to protect our rights." She never saw a dime from it, did she?5:07 Not a penny.5:08 It was a government work, so it was in the public domain.5:13 And that’s the pattern we see so often, isn't it?5:17 The subject of the art becomes public property.5:21 Lange thought her camera was an "instrument of democracy." It was meant to help.5:27 And it did—on a massive, societal scale.5:30 But for Florence Owens Thompson… it just froze her in the worst moment of her life, for everyone to see, forever.
