0:00 In March of 1936, photographer Dorothea Lange was driving home, her month-long assignment for the government complete.0:08 She drove twenty miles past a crude sign that read "Pea-Pickers Camp" before a voice in her head forced her to turn the car around.0:18 And that U-turn is the only reason we have the most iconic photograph of the Great Depression.0:25 It's exactly the kind of hidden story we talked about last week on "Behind the Lens"—the single moment that changes everything.0:34 So set the scene for me.0:36 Lange is working for the Roosevelt administration?0:40 That's right.0:41 The Farm Security Administration.0:43 They hired a team of photographers, Lange included, to go out and capture the reality of agricultural poverty.0:51 This wasn't art for art's sake.0:53 This was a government project to build public sympathy and support for New Deal programs.1:00 So every shot had a purpose.1:02 It was ammunition.1:03 Exactly.1:04 And when Lange pulled into that muddy, desperate camp in Nipomo, California, she saw her target.1:11 A woman in a tent.1:12 She said she was drawn to her "as if by a magnet." This is Florence Owens Thompson.1:18 The Migrant Mother.1:20 This is Florence Owens Thompson.1:22 Thirty-two years old, a mother of seven.1:25 Lange spent just ten minutes with her.1:28 She took seven photographs.1:30 She moved closer and closer, rearranging the children, tightening the frame, until she got the one.1:37 The one we all know.1:39 The one with the children hiding their faces, and Thompson staring off into the distance, her hand to her chin.1:47 It looks like a Madonna and child from the Renaissance.1:51 That was intentional.1:52 Lange was a master of composition.1:55 She even retouched the negative later to remove a distracting thumb from the bottom corner.2:02 She was crafting a symbol.2:04 And it worked.2:05 The photo was published, and the government sent twenty-thousand pounds of food to that camp.2:11 So it had an immediate, direct impact.2:14 The system worked.2:16 The system worked for the cause.2:18 It didn't work for Florence Owens Thompson.2:21 Hold on—what do you mean?2:23 The story Lange told was that Thompson and her kids were starving, living on frozen vegetables and birds the children killed.2:32 But that wasn't the whole picture.2:35 Thompson was a proud, strong woman.2:37 A Native American woman who had survived the death of her first husband and was waiting for her partner to return with their car after fixing it.2:48 They weren't starving to death.2:50 So the photo...2:51 it wasn't the whole truth.2:53 A photograph is never the whole truth.2:56 It's a slice.2:57 And this slice cast her as a victim for the rest of her life.3:01 Her own daughter said she resented the photo because it didn't show her as the leader she was.3:08 It made her a symbol of helplessness, and she was anything but helpless.3:14 Did she ever get compensated?3:16 Or even recognized?3:17 Never.3:18 She was anonymous for decades.3:20 When she was finally identified, all she had was a sense of bitterness.3:25 She felt her identity was stolen to create this icon of suffering.3:30 She even wrote a letter to a magazine demanding they recall an issue with her picture.3:36 That's the pattern, isn't it?3:38 We see this today with viral images.3:41 A person's worst moment becomes a symbol for millions, but the person themselves is left behind, their actual story erased.3:50 It's the fundamental tension of photojournalism.3:54 Lange herself defended it.3:56 She said, "The image did more good than harm." And maybe she was right.4:01 The FSA program she was documenting helped raise farm family incomes by almost seventy percent in four years.4:09 Her pictures helped do that.4:11 But you look at that photo, and you can't just see a symbol anymore.4:16 You see a person.4:17 You see Florence Owens Thompson.4:20 And you have to wonder if she would agree.4:23 She is immortal.4:24 That's what Lange's boss, Roy Stryker, said.4:27 But immortality has a price.4:29 And she was the one who paid it.
